Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
The obvious thing is that Tech absolutely has to turn this trend around of Charlotte dominating us in head to head play. As tough as it’s going to be to win this series or even greater to sweep it, we need to. We need all the momentum we can get going into the conference tournament. I think we all know that the only way we make the NCAAs is to pretty much win out, take the championship or finish 2nd.

That tournament played in Hattiesburg.

I guess you didn't understand my snide remark. The word "championship" doesn't seem to be in Tech athletics vocabulary. Only the Tech women seem to understand the meaning of the word.
Tech athletics substitutes the word "compete" for "championship".

And even the Tech women prefer to be bridemaids rather than the bride when it comes to reaching the NCAAs.

Sad but true, although they showed out in bowling.....a minor sport, but nevertheless.

And our softball program has been to 2 of the past 4 NCAA tournaments.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Tech probably needs 2 of 3 against Charlotte and a win in Hattiesburg to be a lock for the tourney. That’s a big need though, don’t think our pitching is good enough to contain the Charlotte bats.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
On paper it looks like we should take 2 of 3, but....well, y'all know.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
I can’t believe how bad Rice and Tulane are at baseball now.
We need at least 2 out of 3 and 2 wins in Hattiesburg for a shot at getting into a regional.
We will probably Tech it up and sweep this weekend, win the tournament then not win a game in regionals.

MT would have to win 2 against USM to do that.
Since Tech beat ODU twice, ODU beat MT twice, and MT beat Tech twice, the next tiebreaker should go to the top of the standings.
Tech beat USM once, ODU beat USM twice, and MT would have to beat USM twice. That would make Tech the #5 seed with ODU #3 and MT #4.
Need to get at least two in Charlotte in the worst way.

No surprises so far from our strike outs looking to our starter having a complete collapse and Burroughs being unprepared.

Do we ever come back from ass kicking type innings where we go from leading to being behind substantially? I can’t remember any such instance.

Regardless of the rest of Tech tonight it’s great see Young do well for himself. I sure would love to see him get a shot at the next level. The guy just plays really good baseball.

Fits the pattern. Tech needs 8 hits or more to win consistently. 6 won't get it done.
8 hits wouldn't have gotten it done tonight either though. Needed at least 12 to have a shot.

Just your average Friday night as a Dawg fan.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Did I hear Allen right saying that Charlotte had 100 more walks for the season than Tech. That sounds totally unbelievable but given our number of Ks maybe it’s not so big a stretch.

Charlotte led the nation by 10 with 344 walks going into today and added 3 more tonight. 347 now.
Tech has walked 238 times this year (ranked #83 going into Thursday). Last year's Tech team walked 271 times.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
5-way tie for third at 17-11 one game behind Tech. Seems pretty simple now since Tech will likely be the #2 seed only if it wins its next two games. Otherwise Tech could fall anywhere in that 3-7 mix.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Right now, the only good thing you can say about us is Young and Corona are hitting well lately. That's it. Which is why a good coach, one whose head was not up his ass, would "bunch" those two such that they are likely to bat in the same inning many times. Right now, I would put Young 2nd and Corona 3rd in the lineup. Who would lead off? Doesn't seem to matter too much with all the inconsistency, but someone who might get on base and who has decent speed. Other certainties would have Matulia batting 8th and Elliot 9th. The rest of the lineup, for now, would be based on our history vs. opposing starters. Example, maybe we'll see a guy in H'burg that McConnell has lit up, well, have him lead off that game. Like that. Use your head for something other than a cap rack.
Our pitching is average down to woeful, and our defense is "very pedestrian." Someone cited fielding stats recently...well, stats don't tell the tale...just watch this bunch trying to play Division I baseball defense. Calling them "okay" would be an extreme compliment, and misleading.
But, ultimately, it won't matter, because no matter our official seeding we are no better than the 7th best team...I have us placed ahead of UAB, yeah baby!

Those numbers added in to our woeful batting averages and strikeout numbers confirm to me by leaps and bounds that we need a new hitting coach for 2023. Probably a new pitching coach too since our senior starters as a whole are considerable unimproved from last year. If you’re not going to get better at least don’t get worse and we didn’t do that. Burroughs has to upgrade his coaching, his coaches coaching and everything his team does. We can’t afford to backside anymore.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
The Y is open for business early today. Marshall has 6 runs on 8 hits with 4 doubles and a home run in two innings. 6-0 Herd over FAU after 2.
But no lead is safe at the Y. FAU answers with 4 in the top of the 3rd, but Marshall has answered with a 2-run HR right off the bat in the bottom of the 3rd. 8-4 Marshall.

Two stranded in the 1st. Need a guy to at least roll the ball, but he looks at the first pitch (probably told to) and wiffs on two off speed pitches.

.
Usually the overall best hitter bats 3rd, that is Baseball 101. By overall, it means the guy who dots all the i's with average, power, RBIs. Taylor Young is a very good 3-hole hitter. Unfortunately, Tech lacks the two guys you want leading off and hitting 2nd. High on-base averages, run well, can steal bases, and who can handle the bat...meaning minimal striking out. We don't have such hitters, that is why I suggested putting Young 2nd, Corona 3rd. Not ideal, but we don't have anyone else.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Horrible missed ball 4 call on Young.
Young walks on ball 5.
Young steals second again.
Defensive conference with 3-0 on Matulia. Action in the 49er bullpen.
Matulia walks and Young steals third.
Netterville grouds into a 6-4-3 double play, but Young scores. Tech 2-0.
McConnell strikes out looking. 2.
Single to center.
Bunt to Jennings moves the runner to second.
Wild pitch moves the runner to third.
Another 4-pitch walk.
Jennings throwing error gifts Charlotte a run. Runner at second. Tech 2-1.
Grounder to Matulia with the putout by Jennings. Runner at third.
Grounder to Elliott.
Tech 2-1 after 3.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Corona flies to deep center a step from the wall.
Myers grounds to short.
Burchfield strikes out. 3.
Strikeout #2 by Jennings.
Single to left center.
Grounder to Elliott in short right with Jennings making the putout. Review. Runner would be at second regardless. Put a star by that one if it holds up. Looks out to me.
Call confirmed. Runner at second 2 out.
Another 4-pitch walk.
Jennings at 61 pitches.
Strikeout #3.
Jennings at 65 pitches.
Tech 2-1 after 4.

Nope. You saying Young should be a 3 hole hitter shows your low baseball IQ. He defines a perfect one hole hitter.

Glad they burned that challenge but I don't understand why the 1st base coach called for it. I understand wanting your guy to be safe in that moment, but you've got to be sure in that situation, right?

Didn't look close to me. Only thing was if Jennings had the ball when his foot was on the bag.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
McLeod grounds to short.
Elliott grounds to second. Nice pick by the 2B on that one.
Young strikes out. 4. All 4 have ended innings.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
From the sounds of things and how it sounds like Jennings isn’t getting much in the way of calls I think any of our other pitchers would’ve blown up by now and starting serving up easy hits down the middle of the plate.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Elliot might beat Burchfield in a foot race.

His misses have been close, but most were balls. He did get at least two Young-level balls called as strikes.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
It obvious to say that if Tech is going to win this game and help our pitching, we’ve got to put some base hits together. Come on Dawgs fight back!
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Matulia grounds to the 3B playing by second base with the shift.
Netterville singles to left.
McConnell singles to right. Runners at first and second.
Corona singles to medium right center and Netterville scores on a good slide. Charlotte is going to review. That will exhaust the Charlotte challenges if wrong. Looks like Netterville's arm clearly got in before the tag.
Call confirmed. Tech 3-2.
Visit and pitching change.
Myers singles to left to load the bases.
Lancaster pinch-hits for Burchfield.
Lancaster takes one for the team. Tech 4-2.

Grounder to McLeod.
Tech 5-2 after 6.

Visit to the mound with 2-1 on Lancaster.

Evidently because of their walk stats they’re used to either getting balls called or pitches straight down the middle of the plate. They mostly either walk or get hits.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
We finally wedged one in that screwy right field area they have.
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
McLeod flies to right.
Elliott pops to second.
Young hit by a pitch.
Young moves to second on a wild pitch.
Visit to the mound with 1-0 on Matulia. May be the slowest pitching change I have ever seen.
Matulia walks on 4 pitches.
Netterville walks to load the bases.
McConnell hit by a pitch. Tech 8-2.
Another pitching change.
Corona flies to center.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
McLeod & Elliott 0-9 at bat tonight... sad
-
Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
With tonight's win, Tech cannot finish worse than Charlotte. So it is now seeds 2-6. And that could very easily change with a couple of games still in progress.
What can be said now is that if Tech wins tomorrow, it has the #2 seed.
Charlotte scheduled fireworks. Kiss of death.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
A big important win. Thank you Ryan for being tough and not letting that ump beat you.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Game time Saturday moved up to 11:00 PM (assuming ET) according to LB. Went right over Teddy's head.

Amazing that LB says he does not pay attention to RPI, but knows all the current CUSA tournament seeding scenarios

Except he doesn't. With UTSA's win over UAB and USM's 17-0 win over MT, Tech will be the 2, 3, or 4 seed depending on tomorrow's results. MT and Charlotte will not be able to catch Tech. But combinations of the other 3 teams could if Tech doesn't win tomorrow.
If Tech wins or FAU loses--Tech is the #2 seed.
If Tech loses:
1) FAU wins with ODU and UTSA losing--FAU #2, Tech #3
2) ODU wins with FAU and UTSA losing--Tech #2, ODU #3
3) UTSA wins with ODU and FAU losing--Tech #2, UTSA #3
4) ODU and UTSA win with FAU losing--Tech #2 (tiebreaker over both), UTSA #3 (head-to-head over ODU), ODU #4
5) ODU and FAU win with UTSA losing--cannot break tie on head-to-head. ODU gets #2 with 2-1 vs USM with Tech and FAU both 1-2, FAU #3 with head-to-head over Tech, Tech #4
6) UTSA and FAU win with ODU losing--FAU #2 (tiebreaker over both), Tech #3 with head-to-head over UTSA, UTSA #4
7) FAU, UTSA, and ODU all win--record against tied teams FAU 5-4, Tech 5-4, UTSA 4-5, ODU 4-5. FAU #2 on head-to-head against Tech, Tech #3 on head-to-head against both ODU and UTSA, UTSA #4, ODU #5.

Probably because he knows that maintaining future job security matters in how his team does this year. To finish ugly will be a bolt font black mark in the judgement book. Following up last years NCAA appearance matters. Even more important than Burroughs’ resume is that this team gets in for the seniors who have played hard to get there.

My point was that weak OOC scheduling can be controlled by the HC and other than the roster, it is about the only thing he can actually control. He knows this and this is why he scoffs at RPI mentions throughout the season.

Nope. You saying Young should be a 3 hole hitter shows your low baseball IQ. He defines a perfect one hole hitter.
Young hits doubles. He has HR power too, but mostly he is our most consistent hitter across ALL the hitting stats. He is a perfect 3 hole hitter. Yeah, sure when we had Parker Bates, we didn't need Young to be the 3 hole hitter. I am talking about THIS YEAR's team.
And I will say it again, again, and again...a team's overall best hitter, across all of the stats, is the perfect 3 hole hitter. And don't you ever question my baseball knowledge, I haven't forgotten more than you will ever know.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Young is our best threat to steal AND leads in walks, but I'm sure you noticed that with all your baseball knowledge. He is the best lead off batter Tech has ever had. See the records.

Yes, he is an excellent lead off guy. He'd also make a great 2-hole hitter, and 3-hole hitter. Hell! he'd make an excellent 9-hole hitter if he was on a team of awesome hitters! This is not about Young's ability at the plate wherever he bats in the lineup. It's about the needs of the team this year. He is our best OVERALL hitter and Baseball 101 states that is your 3-hole hitter. Period. But YOU said the best OVERALL hitter on a team should be the 2-hole hitter... I actually LOL'd at that stupid comment.
Moving on...
Crigger looked sharp last night. Charlotte can score runs but they looked hapless against his stuff.
Corona is looking really good at the plate for the past month+. Even when he gets behind 0-2 he is protecting the plate, and drove one to the deepest part of the park for a noisy out. I would have Young and Corona batting closer to each other in the lineup right now. If you want Young to lead off, put Corona in the 3-hole, separated by anyone but Matulia. Maybe McConnell.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Young singles to center.
Matulia singles to right center. Runners at first and second.
Netterville walks to load the bases.
McConnell grounds to second. Runners at second and third. Tech 1-0.
Corona grounds to third. No advance.
Myers hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Visit to the mound. No change.
Burchfield grounds to short, but Myers is safe at second and Burchfield is safe at first. Review on the play at first. Bang-bang play. Don't see enough to overturn on that replay.
Call stands. Tech 2-0. Charlotte's head complainer is not happy.
McLeod hit by a pitch. Tech 3-0.
Pitching change.
Elliott SLAM to left center. Tech 7-0.
Young grounds to third.
Grounder to Young.
Single to right.
1-6-3 double play.
Tech 7-0 after 1.

Re: LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Final Conference Series
Wade is outside his mind. Burroughs calling a bunt there was idiotic. Man already in scoring position. We would have at least a run this inning without the bunt.
