Looks okay after today. Today will be a washout according to weather.com. And there's only 2 makeup slots on Friday and maybe one on Sunday. Does the tourney become single elimination or maybe 7 inning games to try to get in a 5th game? Hopefully ODU/MTSU can get their game in.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
No team can play more than 2 games or parts of games in a single day per NCAA rules. That means if games 9 or 10 are pushed back into Saturday, the if necessary games 13 or 14 could not be played that day because it would be at least one team's third game.
7-inning games not under the 10-run rule are not regulation games unless they are part of a doubleheader. Tournament games are not doubleheaders.
10-run rule is in effect for all games.
Game 1 underway on time. ODU retires Middle Tennessee in order in the 1st.
Due to work I will only be posting periodically as I am able and will not be doing full play-by-play the next two days.
ETA, ODU gets 4 in the bottom of the 1st including a 3-run bomb high off the left center light standard.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
4-3 ODU after 3. MT 3-run homer in the 2nd off the scoreboard narrowed the gap.
Showers and storms build south and southwest of Hattiesburg ahead of the main line. Probably about another hour before weather starts having an impact.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Gagliardi grand slam makes it 10-3 ODU with the Monarchs still batting in the 4th.

11-3 ODU in the 5th. MTSU must have dismissed their pitching staff the way they have been bombed recently. How did we lose 2 of 3 to those guys?

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
what's the run rule situation?
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
15-6 ODU in the bottom of the 6th. 7 home runs so far accounting for 18 of the 21 runs with 2 solo, 4 3-run, and 1 slam. 5 by ODU, 2 (both 3-run) by MT.
Rain is very close now.
And just as the rain starts the Blue Raiders misplay a popup to make it 17-6 ODU. Rain delay.

Now a dern rain delay. Tech probably won't be playing at 12:30.

Standard 10-run rule after 7 innings in all games except the championship game. Same as it is every year.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Resumption almost immediately.
Still 4 outs to get and more rain is close.
Now 18-6 ODU going to the 7th.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Radio broadcast on the air on time. Just light rain in the Hattiesburg area now. Heavier line back from west of Bogalusa through Slidell back over Lake Pontchartrain moving north and northeast.
May have a window, but hard to tell how long it will last.
Lancaster at DH. No other changes in the lineup. Gibson starting.

Tech 4-0 after 1 with the Myers 2-run BOMB to left center.

Defense boots two so the offense should score something like a 4-spot.
Line of storms is filling in west of Hattiesburg at Columbia and south toward Bogalusa. Hopefully the heaviest goes north, but not looking good.

Tech 4-0 after 2.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Tech 4-0 after 3.
Lightning delay. Line to the west is getting inside the 8-mile radius moving NNE. But another batch SSW on I-59 around Poplarville is moving straight into Hattiesburg. Could be a couple of hours.

if this delay lasts until 4:40 I'll be happy

Yeah, uh huh, I have a board meeting starting at 4:30. Have commitments tomorrow too. If the Dawgs go 2-0 in these two games I won't get to watch, well, I can live with it.
I suppose Gibson is finished, or he probably should be. 1) given what happened last week in the 4th inning, and 2) this long delay. His arm can't feel right, even with a warm-up.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Under an hour Gibson probably could have come back out. Should be less likely with every passing minute now. But knowing Burroughs anything is possible because he will listen to Gibson who will want to continue regardless.
Tail of the original line moving through Hattiesburg now. Next batch of heavier activity moving into Poplarville with a wide area north and northwest of Slidell.
Could still be some time if they wait for rain to get down to very light activity. Just may not be enough of a window to be clear of lightning for 30 minutes before more moves in.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Worst of what was to the south looks like it will just brush Hattiesburg and points south and east.
Rain still on radar coming in for some time yet. If they want a dry restart, we will stay in a holding pattern.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Jason Munz
@munzly
Sounds like Charlotte and La Tech are headed back to the hotel to wait out the remainder of the delay. But folks are cautiously optimistic play will resume in the next 2-3 hours.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Really tough on our thin pitching staff.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Awesome hoping we come back with crigger for a few innings and score some runs to shut down Charlotte.

Could work out for us. Cade only threw 39 so he should be ready for another start as early as Friday.
I expect LB to use some of our middle guys for two or three innings before he goes to Crigger.
My guess is Jennings tomorrow.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Latest word is a radar check at 5:00 PM to determine if a resumption time can be set.

I was thinking that we may only play a few innings tonight so we could potentially have an extra day of Crigger if we threw him first thing tonight.

Could be but risky. He can’t go 6 if need be.

Yeah I agree but maybe he can go 2-3 and meanwhile the offense can stretch the lead to 6-7. Charlotte doesn’t have a great bullpen either.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Looks like there is a hole in the rain that may get to Hattiesburg during the next hour or so. More rain is around the mouth of the Mississippi to south of Grand Isle moving inland.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
They are shooting for a 6:45 PM restart. Just posted on C-USA's Twitter. And the Tech baseball account says 6:47 PM.

Prudent and exactly what should have been expected.
Means the winner of the first two pool games in the USM pool plays Friday morning and the loser of that game has to play again Friday evening.
No way the FAU-UTSA game can be played tonight. They will be lucky to get the USM-UAB game in tonight with more rain coming.
Tech just needs to finish this one off and win again at 4:00 PM tomorrow to get straight to Saturday. Control what you can control, and the rest is noise.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Gibson continues. Call me shocked, but I'm not really.
Single to center.
Strikeout #6 for Gibson.
Strikeout #7.
Wild pitch moves the runner to second.
Grounder to Elliott.
Charlotte goes with their ace who shut Tech down last Thursday out of the pen.
Corona lines to third.
Myers grounds to the 2B playing left of second. Ruled a single.
Myers steals second.
Balk moves Myers to third.
Lancaster strikes out. 3.
McLeod strikes out looking. 4.
Tech 4-0 after 4.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Fincher and Tomkins in the pen for Tech.
Hit batsman.
Fly to Myers.
Pop to Young.
Fouts visits on a 2-0 count.
Fly to Myers.
76 pitches for Gibson. I would shut him down right now.
Elliott strikes out. 5.
Young hit by a pitch but so far scored as a walk.
Matulia strikes out. 6. Young steals second.
Netterville grounds to short for a single. Young moves to third.
Netterville steals second.
McConnell strikes out. 7.
Tech 4-0 after 5.

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Fincher replaces Gibson.
Single to center.
5-4-3 double play.
Strikeout. Sombrero for the Charlotte RF.
Corona strikes out. 8.
Myers strikes out looking. 9.
Lancaster strikes out looking. 10.
8 strikeouts out of the 9 outs for the guy who killed Tech last week.
Tech 4-0 after 6.

Fly to Netterville.
Liner to Netterville. Nice catch.
Fly to Netterville.
McLeod doubles to the right field corner.
Elliott bunts to the pitcher and the throw to third was late. First and third.
Elliott moves to second on a wild pitch.
Young grounds to first. No advance.
Matulia flies to short center. No advance.
Netterville strikes out. 11.
Tech 4-0 after 7.
Could have relieved some pressure with a couple of runs there.

Read the thread. I said sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't. 2 LOB after second and third nobody out with 1-2-3 up means more than 2 LOB who reach after 2 out.
-

Lets Get ‘em out and get to supper! …
. 8 hours after first pitch.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Strikeout #1 for Crigger.
Single to right off Matulia's glove.
Corona throwing error moves the runner to second.
Walk. 1st walk by Tech pitching.
Fouts visits.
Strikeout #2.
Grounder to Elliott.
Tech 4-0 final
First time Charlotte has been shutout in 2022.
Couldn't have scripted that any better except maybe for a shorter delay.

I think a good strategy for him is to sneak up in the box to try to hit that curve at the top of it’s break and not the bottom.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
Hell of a win! Outstanding job by our pitchers today. Player of the game has to be A.D. though, Adarius has been swinging the bat really well lately. Keep it going the rest of the tournament young man. HBTD!

Bunt!
My team faced a pitcher, a fireballer with an awesome change-up and a sweeping curve. Couldn't hit him...well, weak grounders and pop-ups. He was great, but the defense playing behind him was average. Fortunately, our pitchers had matched him goose egg for goose egg and we came up to bat in the top of 7th, score 0-0. Our coach said, "we're gonna bunt. Put the ball in play make them have to make plays." It worked. They made two huge errors and the score keeper was kind crediting us with an infield single, was really the third error in the inning. This great pitcher got frustrated and decided he had to strike out the side, and he made his one mistake of the night...a too-fat fast ball that Stephen F., our left-fielder, drilled into right center plating two runs. We won 3-0, had just the two hits and he walked no one, but his team made two (really 3) errors.
Look what happened when Elliot laid down a bunt...it worked! and everyone was safe.
Need to give our hitters a broom, maybe they can reach the pitch with that. I have never seen a team look so awful, so often, time and time again, chasing sweeping curves, pulling off of it, ending up with one hand on the bat like they are swatting flies. Pathetic.

Against their ace today he did what they all should have been doing. He shortened his swing and protected the plate. And got a base hit!!!

Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
UAB 1 USM 1 after 2.
Errors on both sides lead to runs.
-
Re: LA Tech Opens Conference Tournament Play with Charlotte
UAB 2 @USM 1 top 4th 0 out
Leadoff HR for UAB.
Fireworks in the bottom of the 4th.
Both teams get a warning for jawing at each other.
USM ties it 2-2 on a sac fly and takes the lead 3-2 on a dubious at best balk call.
UAB head coach is then ejected after a long argument.
USM 3-2 after 4.

No you're not. Maybe you are but the majority of Southern Miss. fans are rooting for Tech to lose. In fact most Southern Miss. fans are rooting for a ODU and Southern Miss. championship game. Regardless, I always root for the underdogs when it's not my school; so I'm rooting for UAB to win this game against Southern Miss.

I haven't met any fans that want to play ODU if we make it to the championship. We want to play a regional team that we actually care about and that will bring some fans. I would think the same for y'all. If you play anyone but us there won't be any fans at the game and it will be a terrible atmosphere.

A Tech and Southern Miss. championship would be an incredible atmosphere but I think you're alone in rooting for Tech to win. If you look at most Southern Miss. message boards they're rooting for Tech to lose out.

On a sidenote, USM should not be allowed to blink the lights and blast loud music when they hit a HR or do something good. They just happen to be the host school, but this is the CUSA conference tourney, not a USM regular season home series. Conference, neutral officials should be in charge of ALL ASPECTS of the tourney, including the press box, special effects, scoreboard, etc...
As for the play on the field, I am rooting FOR Tech and not AGAINST any other school. I also want what is best for Tech, and by extension, CUSA. So, if that means a Tech vs. USM championship game gives us our best shot at an at-large bid...provided we don't beat the Mustard Buzzards for the autobid...then I am all for it.

The fact that we are even playing the tournament in Hattiesburg speaks to the lack of spine our CUSA leaders and remaining presidents have. I don't expect them to make these turds at USM follow the protocol we followed last year.

Same here. Tech/USM has been my favorite rivalry in all sports since we joined C-USA. At the end of the day, I'm a Tech alumnus and fan. We will move on.

So at least one USM fan says, "It's Tech's Fault." A ULM fan asked about the light show at USM last night, and here was their response:
In the past when we hosted it was always as a "neutral site" configuration, as it was at Rice and other on campus locations in the past. Last year in Ruston, LaTech treated it as a home tournament. They played their players' walkup music, did all the "make some noise" crowd-inducing stuff and had their normal regular season HR celebrations. It was the first time that happened in the CUSA tournament held on a campus. CUSA was asked to intervene after LaTech's first game and they said "there's nothing we can do". Our AD took note and this is basically a big old "up yours" to CUSA that we are doing it in our park because they let LaTech run it like a travel ball tournament last year.

I thought the same thing about the loud music and flashing lights when USM did something good. I guess they are testing the conference to see if they say stop.

Is this true? I guess I wasn't paying close attention last year and don't remember.

I saw where the Sunbelt Tournament is going to single elimination. Anyone heard of that for CUSA?
