Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
I knew it had to be coming. Nebraska may never be a national title contender again. But their fans expect way more than they have gotten lately.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Has a coaching carousel thread ever started after week 3? (I count week 0 as week 1)

Last season usc fired Clay Helton after week 2 or 3 however you look at it, after a 1-1 start. Ironic huh? But I get your point, seems like it is faster every season.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
So, when we go play NU next year they'll have a new coach, probably a dern good one, and we'll get smoked. :icon_roll:

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
I mention this only because I am mired in all things NSU around here, but I am surprised Brad Laird is still employed. Might survive the season or til week 11, but he's probably gone. These lousy coaches don't have AD Greg Burke covering for them anymore.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
It’s amazing how far Nebraska has fell since Tom Osborne retired.

Actually since Frank Solich who was 58-19 in 6 years. At the time Nebraska thought that was unacceptable.
Steve Pederson the horrible AD was the real problem.

That’s true, but those Osborne teams were dominant. Now the Nebraska teams are doormat.

Truth!!!! I've lived in Natchitoches since 1986 and agree with the above. The last good football coach here was Sam Goodwin. I quit going to NSU games in 2000.

They may have a hard time getting another big time coach to go there. Herm left that place in a mess, both with players left and the ncaa mess.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Fired in the end zone after the game! I’ve heard of being fired on the tarmac, but being fired between the lines must feel different. If you see the video, it seemed like he knew what was about to happen.
-
Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Didn't we have one fired as he walked off the field? Might even have been the son of a famous football coach. Odds are with me on that last sentence.

Very odd that he gets fired walking off the field, but yet he talks to the team after the game in the locker room telling what they will need to improve on for the next game. Then he goes to the post game press conference. Answers all the questions asked by the press. No mention that he just been fired. On Sunday the ad announces that Edwards is no longer the coach.
Odd that he would be in the locker room after the game and not tell the team he was no longer the coach. The address the media, again no mention of not being the coach. Where was the ad? Very unusual that he would get to do those things if he was already fired. Plus the ad did not say he was fired until Sunday.

I remember the story of Mike Sherman at Texas A&M. He was in a recruit's driveway when he was called on the phone and told of his firing. While he was upset that news was leaking before he could talk to his family / players, he still went in the house and talked to the recruit and his family about why TAMU was the right place for him. While he may not have been the most successful college coach, that story showed me he had a lot of class.

Boise State fired their OC. Now their four year starter at QB has entered the portal. This season he will redshirt having played in only four games. Due to covid he will have two years to play for his new team. It's a new world.

Mike Sherman was legitimately one of the classiest coaches to ever walk a sideline, but in today's world, that's not at the top of the the priority list when looking for a head coach.

How about instead of the Tech fans falling out with Cumbie over these next few years of hard times football and maybe calling for him to be fired if he doesn’t work some sort of miracle we start right now calling louder and louder for Guice to step down. After all he’s the reason why Tech is so down and out and seemingly lost. It’s totally inexcusable for the headman of a university to be so totally clueless and inept at managing things and steering the program into future. If this was a ship at see all hands would be lost.

Tech’s campus doesn’t resemble what it looked like 5 to 10 years ago. It’s difficult to imagine the money spent on our campus. It would be cool if the parents sending their kids to Tech were actually raising them to be Tech fans, but they aren’t. Our president is winning among his peers. Very few of his peers are fans of ANY Tech sport.
-
Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Vision and leadership is inspired from top down. Guice has done well managing money the state was going to send to Tech for campus development no matter who the Prez is. He has no idea how to use money generated by or donated to sports. As has been stated, we need a business mind on the 16th floor that understands what his AD and coaches are supposed to do and knows how to monitor whether they are or not. Guice, like Reneau, is probably the nicest guy you will ever meet. We need ruthless business people making decisions with people under them who can smooth the water when their boss comes on too strong.

Enrollment
Fall 2017 12,873
Fall 2018 12,467
Fall 2019 11,957
Fall 2020 11,197
Fall 2021 11,173

High standards at Wisconsin. Paul Chryst fired today. 67-26 (.720 winning percentage) in 7 seasons, $16.4 million buy-out. 43-18 (.705 winning percentage) in the Big 10.
He will be back soon somewhere. Every team he has ever coached has been in a bowl.

I don’t get it either. It’s one thing to expect Tech to win 10 games in a conference that Evangel could dominate. It’s another thing to expect Wisconsin to play in and win the conference title every year while playing Michigan, Penn St, Ohio St and (usually strong) Iowa.

Join the crowd. Wisconsin just fired a guy with a greater winning percentage than Barry Alvarez. The talking heads are giving everyone this is the new world of college football line.
I thought when Wisconsin got rid of Alvarez as AD that quality, winning football coaches would stick around for a while, now they fire one. Maybe the are trying to become the next Nebraska.
Seriously though, can they get Urban Meyer? Would he ensure fewer upset loses? And, close the gap between Wisconsin and Ohio State? When you fire a coach you have to know you can get a better one. How many guys are available that will be a better fit than Paul Chryst? Guys who would take the job. Guess we are about to find out.

Reneau hired an LSU hall of famer to be AD because his wife was good friends with Stovall’s wife. That set Tech athletics back 10 years right there.

They mustve put that on hold to fix some of the housing and building situations first… definitely didnt meet that. But at the same time I can’t imagine the space for an extra 3000 unless they were all online enrollment.

The enrollment goal of 15,000 was contingent on a merger with LSUS.
I've seen our fanbase discuss this since Tech 2020 was made public. But the fact is we don't have the infrastructure in Ruston to handle 15,000 students.
Dr. Guice was asked about this at a tour stop in Baton Rouge in 2015. He went in-depth about it. It all hinged on the merger with LSUS.

I’m curious by what you mean of the infrastructure. What sort of infrastructure does Ruston need? Do you really mean ‘Ruston’ specifically or Ruston as in Tech in Ruston?

State owned Housing/Parking mainly. It was BS then and still is. We still have a large percentage of commuters. I realize students count more (to the politicians) if they live on campus, but they are still students. There is no other place in North Louisiana that is building more housing that Ruston. Been that way since well before 2015 and our campus has been completely renovated since 2015. If the "infrastructure" is not there now, there was some HORRIBLE planning.

When talking about housing being built in Ruston, is it all single family detached housing that we are talking about? I feel like with the continuation of the enterprise campus, they are missing a big opportunity to create mixed use development downtown to connect with the enterprise campus. Some of the parking lots and empty lots downtown would be better for the city if they had businesses and people located there.

The reason I asked my original question is because I’ve lived in Ruston for 50+ years now after returning and have seen all the infrastructure development and growth, so I don’t see what Ruston is missing other than being a ‘big city’.

Yes.
“Never any parking” actually just means “never a spot right in front of the building my class is in.”

Parking availability is certainly not a problem when it comes to infrastructure.

Can't agree more. Parking on campus is fine and I have said that since I was a student. Walking 20 minutes is normal everywhere in the world. People are spoiled when it comes to parking and driving.

Preach! There can be an argument made that we have more parking on campus than needed if taking into account all parking lots around the athletics areas and around the outskirts of campus.

Here comes the old geezer in me: "when I was a student, we didn't all have cars and walked to and from class". I would walk from Nielsen to Bogard dang near every day. Rain or shine. Kids today are just plain spoiled (no surprise there).

I usually parked in the 'Dog Trot' parking lot and walked everywhere on campus. Do I remember that correctly 'Dog Trot'?

Hate to interrupt the conversation about parking and urban planning with actual sports news. But Neal Brown is trying to coach himself off the hot seat. They are singing 'Country Roads' in Morgantown as West Virginia upsets Baylor tonight 43-40 in a very exciting game.
The other Thursday night game not so exiting. UCF over Temple 70-13.

I doubt he succeeded. With a 3 point lead and 3 minutes left his QB threw an interception inside the WV 30 that allowed Baylor to tie the game. Was not a very smart play call, and execution by the QB was even worse.

Yeah he may have gotten fired this week had it not worked out in the end. His team responded great though after they got the ball back after Baylor tied the game.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
I have a feeling based on this season’s early results that coach Cumbie already knows he’s an the coaching carousel. But it’s not the one where the fans (as few and far between as we are) and the powers at be all want him gone as much as it’s the carousel he wants to get off of and away from Tech ASAP. No doubt he’s already figured out what a really little fish Tech is in the big pond of small time college football and how far removed we are from being anything truly relevant.
Holtz left Tech with a sinking ship of any sort of reliable recruiting base and the thinnest of ranks of good quality talent. Meanwhile on the larger scale our Tech ship is being piloted by a clueless president and a make no waves AD. in other words we’ve hit an iceberg under our waterline and slowly going under.
Cumbie’s only way out at this point is turn straw into gold and get gone before his credibility as a competent coach gets blown completely out of the water. This Tech fiasco situation could end his head-coaching career about as quickly as it began.
Going into this season I’d seriously underestimated what kind of team Tech had talent wise. I thought Cumbie was going to coach us to a winning season on his coaching capabilities alone and then next year we were going to be back competitively and maybe even in the running for a conference championship contention. Now I think we’re at last 2 more years away from even building an athletically talented team and that’s on the optimistic side of things not taking into account if Cumbie can even develop or put together a competent coaching staff and then him lead it.
Tough times may only get tougher.

I didn't necessarily expect a winning season but I sure hoped we'd put something better than whatever this is on the field. I agree with you, we have very little talent left to fall back on even with perfect coaching.

Anyone know what census day enrollment for Fall 2022 is?
The Board of Regents is claiming the fall 2022 enrollment at LATech is 11,038 and that overall university enrollment for the state declined by 3.3% this fall. ULL is reported to be down 1,187 students (7.2%).

Enrollment is down nationally again this year, but not at the same rate as the last two years. I think selective and highly selective admission schools are getting hit the most. 3.3 would be a little worse than the national average drop.

The other Thursday night game not so exiting. UCF over Temple 70-13.
Unexpected win last Thursday night. Equally unexpected total drubbing today, Texas Tech 48-10. WVU ad probably on the phone getting together the buyout.

$85.95 million after this season or close to four years of our entire athletic budget.
Jimbo's contract is $95 million over 10 years.
Mel Tucker's contract at Michigan State is $95 million over 10 years.
Mario Cristobal's contract at Miami is $80 million over 10 years.
That's $270 million for 9-12.
All three of them are 3-4 this season.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
in 1979 Tech fired Larry Beightol after 10 games and the team sitting at 2-8. That team was better than this 2022 version and would whip 'em like a sick puppy. Offense was an issue, but the defense was solid. We lost at Miami 6-0 giving up just two field goals, we beat USL 17-0. Did lose to soon-to-be Saints' QB Bobby Hebert and NSU in the silly State Fair Game, 25-21. That didn't help Beightol's cause, for sure. I have heard there were "other issues" that led to Beightol's dismissal, more than just the on-the-field disappointment.
This 2022 team really, really sucks. I have yet to see any signs of coaching that gives me reason to be hopeful. I do think Coach Crumble has a better offensive mind than Holtz...:icon_roll:...which is not saying much. If Crumble finishes 2-10, will he be fired? If we care about the football program's future, he should be. If he finishes 4-8 (wins over FIU and Charlotte) that still sucks, given how weak our schedule is, but is that enough for him to keep his job? Most posters here will say "yes," I'm sure. The only saving grace for him would be the buyout. Tech is too cheap to can a 1st year coach and have to dole out money. What is the buyout?

Yeah, I think he’s the one that told James Davison to just run his little trucking company, he’d take care of the Tech football stuff.

Sonny will be owed 75% of the remaining value on his contract.
Let's do the math, if he was fired after this season.
Next year he will be paid $950,000. Then $1,000,000 per year for the next three years. That's a four year total of $3,950,000. 75% of that is $2,962,500. So we would owe him $2,962,500, plus 75% of any money yet to be paid for this season.

I don't expect Cumbie to be fired this year, even if he finishes 2-10. And that is not just because of the buyout, it's just not something Tech normally does. Not in our DNA.
And then if he manages even 6-6 next season why! the sky is blue again, the clouds are gone, and all is right in Dawg Nation!

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
I think his offense is progressing - we all knew the qb situation was a shit show going into the season and it has really progressed the last few weeks and given us with a glimmer of hope for the future
Our offensive lines and d-lines are trash right now, which the blame has to be squarely laid at the feet of his predecessor
Most injuries that I can remember in a long time
Should of showed better at So Alabama but they were primed for us
Lack of depth and talent is really evident up and down this roster and that's going to take a while to fix even with the transfer portal

West Virginia is always tough at home. They are much weaker on the road. The only game WVA lost at home this year was to a much improved Kansas.

Of course we don't have a news-generating marketing department (formerlycalled the Tech News Bureau). All news releases now must be reduced down to 143 characters. (sarcasm).
It has always been the 9th class day that the numbers are based on. And the 15th class day is always by around the end of September. Even when classes didn't start until the Friday after Labor Day, the latest that day could fall would be September 11 and would make the 15th class day Thursday, October 1.
This year the first class day was Thursday, September 8. The 9th class day was Tuesday, September 20, and the 15th class day was Wednesday, September 28. The 9th class day on September 20 is even noted in the university calendar on the online catalog as Census Day. The Fall 2021 enrollment story was posted on Wednesday, September 29, which was last year's 15th class day. And it is still crickets on Fall 2022 enrollment on October 24.
ULL's enrollment story was posted 10 days ago and was down 6.2% to 15,219. All figures are in based on this quote in the story. "Jim Henderson, president of the ULS system, said UL Lafayette’s enrollment story fits comfortably within the range of other ULS schools, which averaged about a 5.5% enrollment decrease." A 5.5% drop would put Tech at around 10,558. I would expect Tech's figure to be between 10,558 and 11,000, but not over 11,000.

Of course it is a very small sample, but did you notice how Rice never got pressure on Lyddy Saturday? That's because Lyddy has QB TALENT, and knows how to get the ball out of the hole fast. Our OL can deal with that. What our OL can't handle, is a QB who holds the football too damn long. Both our QB1 and QB2 have the bad habit of doing that. I noticed every time Downing (QB2) threw the button hook pass, the ball was late getting there. And that's how OL blocking breaks down and QB's get hurt.
There's a reason LA Tech has two QB's injured right now, and it's partially because both hold the ball too long in the pocket.

More bad news. Freeze now has an 8-year deal at Liberty that averages just under $5 million a year. I was hoping Freeze and RR would be with Power 5 teams by next season. This makes Freeze less likely to go. Liberty has the ability to pay like many Power 5 teams.
The contract is eight seasons and averages just under $5 million per year, according to ESPN sources. It is fully guaranteed through the 2030 season, per the sources, and the annual salary will make Freeze the highest-paid Group of Five coach in 2023 after Cincinnati transitions to the Big 12.

Losing at home 38-20 to Arkansas late in the 4th should mean that the obvious verdict is in. There should be an addition to the list in the top post before Auburn goes to Starkvegas.

We need to fire our Special Teams Coach and the entire defensive coaching staff….now. Start over from scratch.
We are the worst team in FBS. We looking like a freshman JUCO team. No size, no speed, no talent, no coaching.

Re: 2022 Coaching Carousel
Some of our players know how to strut around after making a routine play though… you know the 1 in about 4 times when they actually make a play.

Can you believe our Special Teams Coach had that role for 21 years at TCU? I guess Gary Patterson ran their Special Teams too. Let Sonny run the offense. Guess why Patterson got fired?

That verdict was in last spring when the investigation of Harsin did not allow the boosters to fire him for cause. Now they will have to pay him. Harsins only hope was to win the sec. Word is Leach not part of a package deal. Guesses are it is not Freeze either, wish it was though, he is going to have his way in cusa.
