Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
I guess with 9 teams they couldn't do the pure travel partner system I'd have expected (and still expect for next season). But at least they gave us the UTEP/NMSU trip that way. Will be a kind of weird one-off season (like this season was with 11).
I hate 10 for football (where I think you just spread the bye around and mix with OOC games), but for basketball I guess it really is helpful for both quantity of conference games overall (even if each school would probably just as soon be playing a OOC opponent as CUSA teams we don't care anything about, except that you have to work to go get those games and the timing has to work) and for the balance of everyone playing a Thu/Sat schedule with partners.
No way they don't just do pairs next year, right?

Here are the "travel partners" for this year / based on UTEP/NMSU schedule.
UTEP/NMSU
WKU/MTSU
Tech/SHSU
Liberty/JSU
FIU

But that only applies to UTEP/NMSU (because, come on, you've got to throw the rest of us a bone for that trip).
We aren't playing WKU/MTSU as a travel partner (or any of the rest of them). But I get it (for this year). Surely next year it will more or less be right down the line partners with either Thu/Sat or Wed/Sat (if that is what our new media deal calls for).
I'd assume:
Tech/SHSU
NMSU/UTEP
WKU/MTSU
KSU/JSU
LU/FIU (not close, but that's who will be left - what else would be better)

@studurando
does a terrific job covering the Billikens. Stu reports that SLU (Saint Louis) will host Hofstra and Louisiana Tech as part of its non-conference schedule.
Earlier in the process, we shared that Illinois state visits on November 11th, in a new home and home series.

Thanks for all the updates, but OOC, Saint Louis is the only squad I'm interested in that's out of the norm. Hopefully more to come?

I think Grand Canyon is a good addition. Apparently they were supposed to play Liberty in the WAC-CUSA crossover but we are now playing 3 WAC schools.

@RoccoMiller8: Colorado State and Louisiana Tech will meet in the 23-24 College Basketball season opener on Monday, November 6th, inside Moby Arena.
First ever regular-season meeting between the two programs. The Rams and Dogs met in the 2021 NIT 3rd Place Game, in only meeting.

Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
So with that schedule if we went undefeated (not much danger of that I know) and then lost in the finals of the CUSA tourney, would we even make the NIT?

Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
There are 353 NCAA D1 Teams - Top 25% = 88.25; Top 50% 176.5
Using RPI 3 of our 11 (27%) DI opponents were Top 25% last year with 2 just outside of that range; 8 (73%) opponents in Top 50%, leaving 3 outside - ULM (regular opponent), Nicholls & McNeese (who should be much improved this year).
& Yes I know NET is what the committee uses - 1 Top 25% (1 just outside); but still 8 inside Top 50%.
-
Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
And that doesn’t include conference opponents
SHSU NET 65/ RPI 47
NMSU 189/223 / Let’s just say last year doesn’t count
Liberty 44/39
MTSU 117/67
WKU 177/142

FIU 218/207
Jax State 241/263

Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
Why would RPI or Net or any such ranking be a concern, even a flashing moment of thought, for a Tech MBB fan? The only way we dance is to win the autobid by winning the conference tourney. And that hasn't happened in over 30 years now.

Preach.
I wish it weren't that way, but it is.

Yes, if we go undefeated and lost in the 1st round of the CUSA tourney, I believe our RPI would be enough for consideration into the NCAAT and we'd be the auto-bid from CUSA for the NIT.

Where do we find these teams to play? Not even going to call them a school. Might as well play the intramural teams and generate some student interest.

I am sure there is a list of schools somewhere in the TAC called "schools that will play you for gas money, and a snack allowance" that is where most come from.

Re: 2023-2024 Basketball Schedule
Here is the list from the NCAA of the "Non-Countable Opponents." CountOppDefinition.pdf (ncaa.org)
Here's an article about Non-D1 games Does your school schedule too many games against non-Division I teams? - Mid-Major Madness (midmajormadness.com)
At the time of the article (2018), Northwestern State had 3 losses to Non-DI schools over 5 seasons.
Quote:
For games to be considered countable for statistics (including rankings and records), the following must be true:
• The institution must be a four-year, degree-granting institution and must compete as a fouryear, degree-granting institution.
• The opponent must be considered a varsity intercollegiate team as defined by NCAA bylaw 17
and must be considered countable competition as defined by NCAA bylaws 31.3.3.1 (Divisions
I and II) and 31.3.4.1.1 (Division III).
• The institution must satisfy one of the following:
o Is an active, provisional or reclassifying member of the NCAA
o Is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States
> Middle States Commission on Higher Education
> New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of
Higher Education
> North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission
> Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
> Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges
> Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior College and University Commission
o If the institution is located in Canada, it must satisfy one of the following:
> Is a member of the Universities Canada
> Is a member of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association
> Is a member of U Sports
o Is an active or associate member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
o Is an active or provisional member of the National Christian College Athletic Association
All 3 of our Non-DI opponents are NAIA or NCCAA.

McNeese is now 11-2 and enters their 18-game SLC schedule. It is difficult to run the table in conference play, it just is, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pokes do it and emerge 29-2 and go on to the Big Dance.
Our win over the Pokes is a good win.
