I think the LSU money game next year is why it got moved.

I think Wood saw what a bad deal the NC State series was for us and would have taken ANY real money game to replace it just to keep our meager budget somewhat in tact. The Baylor deal was just as bad and we squirmed out of that one.

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
I don't mind the occasional 2-for-1. It is our best chance to ever host a P5 school. But they do mess up our rotation of $ game, FCS game, home G5, away G5. And they are discounted to the other school by definition.
It is hard to believe we will ever actually get the home game out of this one. That's waaaaay out there.

You can count the number of successful 2 for 1s we've had on one hand. Having the 3rd game in the series in Ruston or even Shreveport never works out.
McClelland screwed up our home game with Army by moving it to Dallas...this after the success we had when we played Navy in Ruston. He was such a turd.

Football vs Navy on 9/18/2010 - Box Score - LA Tech Athletics (latechsports.com) We had 23,000 (tickets sold) for Navy.
31000 at Cotton Bowl Football vs Army on 9/28/2013 - Box Score - LA Tech Athletics (latechsports.com)
Does anyone know how much we got paid? Seems like 23,000 in Ruston is better than 31K in Dallas.

I can't imagine we've done enough of them to count on much more than one hand either way. I agree that when/if we're going to do these, we need to push for the Ruston/Shreveport game to be game 1 or 2, not 3. And that they should be treated as priority games - I still wonder why the heck we moved the MSU game so that both Tech and MSU could go to UMass of all places? What was the point of that? Just trying to make our schedule easier maybe? But why would MSU agree? So weird. I am really scared we're about to be sharing a conference with the Minutemen, although I just can't see why CUSA would want to.

That's a big difference in game experience/feel (I guess part of the pitch would have been the overall experience of the Texas State fair and all).

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
Army was a TMac decision in attempt to appease Metroplex and surrounding Texas area fans. He figured Shreveport fans would show. Closer to 10k than 30k. It was raining almost the entire game…that was the excuse. It was our home game so we probably had some kind of TMac deal with the venue. It’s likely that we paid the venue (ticket sales)and had to eat our expenses

That game was a miserable experience! Constant weather delays and only sold Miller Light :furious3:

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
The game experience sucked cause Tech played to defend the pass against a 98% run-oriented team.

Anyone got a strong preference on who we want to miss?
Given our record the last few years, I think I would rather miss a stronger team like Liberty or WKU.
Past that I do not care one way or the other about playing any other team in CUSA.

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
I wonder how KSU got lucky enough to only be giving up one home Saturday game. Is it just because they drew MTSU and MTSU actually likes the mid-week game of shame?
Glad they got 100 Miles of Hate and Battle of I-10 off weeknights. I do not think of SHSU as a rival but it is odd that that one is mid-week when it is by far the most drivable game for either school.
Not sad to be missing the school with 4X the budget of the rest of the conference, we can always host them in the conference title game anyway.
I wonder what the plan is for 11? And I sure hope we do not go to 12.

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
I wish we knew more details about this media deal we're in.
Somehow some schools only have 3 mid-week games (and more importantly, only 1 home mid-week game). Will they rotate that? How is it determined? Are the additional members changing the payout at all? Pro rata or more?
I know it doesn't matter what we think, but this seems like important stuff. I wonder if it's like the ACC media deal and completely protected from the public?
-
Re: 2024 Football Schedule
this schedule is pretty symmetrical. home games are symmetrical (by calendar week). cupcakes on the ends, followed by road money games, then a traditionally tough g5 as you move toward the middle. dead center on the schedule are the two chihuahuan desert teams.
obviously not a fan of all the midweek games, but three tuesdays in a row is better than that friday-tuesday turnaround.

I take these videos with a huge grain of salt. They're not going to show the X number of students who correctly identified the logos.
Although I bet 90% of them could name all SEC teams.

I would have preferred the question to be how many Tech football games did they attend last year.

About the same number that attend the basketball games now -
75 to 100 on a good night
The current student just doesn't care...

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
It’s definitely frustrating with the weekday games - especially with 2 kids in school. I don’t know what broadcast partner would get us as much exposure if we only had traditional Saturday games. The only Saturday option is streaming since ESPN is full, and without Fox Sports.
One option IMO would be to strike a deal with Diamond Sports Group (Bally Sports), but even then you don’t have nationwide coverage (dispute with Comcast). Also CW could be a spot for a game of the week. They only have Washington State/Oregon State so you have room for at least one game and maybe double headers. I think with those 2 you give up TV money for exposure (but are people watching vs. SEC/BIG/B12/ACC?). How much more do we make by having games on Saturday? (it’s a question, not sarcasm).

I am curious about the viewership numbers for those weekdays. What's the tradeoff vs attendance and Saturday viewing?
-
Re: 2024 Football Schedule
The CW would be interesting, especially with their push for sports, however they already have a deal with the ACC. Would make it harder to have a Saturday game on national TV.

They didn't have any good options for this product. I get that. I don't think there was a right decision to be made.
But I really worry (thus my skepticism and criticism of the deal, or at least push-back to all the "what an amazing job CUSA has done" talk) that it's penny-wise, pound-foolish.
I'm sure the eyeballs are WAAAAAAAY bigger on these weeknight games. But mostly because of less competition for eyes and because they're on the bigger channels. And as more and more conferences chase every last cent (or drop of "exposure") we'll get crowded out there, too. Part of the selling point for this thing was "we'll be the only games on, every college football fan will be watching" but that's already not true. Other conferences (who aren't giving up EVERY October saturday are still getting mid-week games up against us).
I just keep coming back to the MACtion comparison. Is the MAC any better off than they'd have been just streaming or airing locally (or on a new obscure channel every week like the old CUSA deal)? I don't know. I assume they've made more money this way. But are you damaging your future? Crappier atmosphere for those who can come, fewer families (meaning that much less investment in future generations of people who might actually become students/fans).
And then there is just the Tech-specific part that so many of our season ticket holders live in DFW/Houston/Shreveport. We gave away 1/3 of their games!
I don't get to many games either way. Easier to find on tv is better for me personally. But I do worry that it's bad for Tech. And even though it's a short term deal there is no way they don't extend it (and extend it and extend it). Again - look at the MAC. They're stuck in their deal forever I think.

Every single school is chasing "college football fans" at the expense of the actual and potential real fans of that school. I just wonder what good "exposure" to CFB hard-cores and journalists and gamblers does for us. Even if there are a lot of them. At the expense of making decisions for the few fans (and potential students/fans) we actually have?
Maybe that kind of thinking makes sense for the SEC and Big Ten (although it sucks for their fans, too). But for CUSA? I don't know. Juice doesn't seem worth the squeeze, but there aren't good options. I guess it's a pick-your-poison time in college sports.

Yea. Who are these "football fans" who are tuning into weeknight games? Are they going to buy tickets? Are they going to send their kids to Tech and contribute to endowments?

The 2 that have been announced are 3:30 & 5:30 kickoffs. They could have a noon or 2pm CUSA game thrown in there. I hate 11am/noon kickoffs, but at least it would be a Saturday. Also, it would be HOT in the early season games. Only schedule them on cloudy and unseasonably cool days :D

Noon and 7:30 ET on the CW would make most sense to ensure no games overlapped and their "primetime" ACC games are still in the middle of the day instead of competing with Fox/CBS at noon and ESPN/ABC at night. I think the CW also plans on adding NASCAR to their schedule on Saturday so don't really have any idea how Saturday's might look on the CW. Would be great for them to add a "CW Sports" channel but who knows if that would be a national TV channel.

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
I like the old Pete Rozelle NFL model . . . blackout local TV viewing until the stadium attendance reaches a certain level of occupancy. (Of course that was for two timeslots on Sunday afternoon.)

Sadly I think we are too late for anything like that. As you know this TV streaming deal is all about the mega bucks we make and making it easy on the over achieving people who call all the shots.

Arkansas has Mizzou the next weekend after us. We have reached an all-time low!

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
Judy and her followers suck.
Impossible to go to games.
Cost to stream is excessive.
This ain't "national television"...screw the contract that pays NOTHING and play on Saturday!

Comes out to under $7 a game on Hulu.
I agree that this is not improved or served by weekday games. No one cares, it has only negative effects. And with streaming these days, we're not competing for TV spots.

$20 a game if you keep it all 3 months. My in-laws have Sling, so we watch the linear ESPN games there. I usually get a free trial for CBS games
-
Re: 2024 Football Schedule
It’s still cheaper than Buffalo Wild Wings like we did back in the day for the ESPN regional games

You're right, I blanked that it was per month.
I don't mind Hulu Live or having all the games televised. I just don't think that the weekend has to be the sacrifice for it.

Re: 2024 Football Schedule
Venu Sports (ESPN/FOX/WBD) will come out in the fall and it projected to cost ~$50/mo. It should carry all but 4 of our games + CUSA Championship (CBS SN).
Quote:
Venu Sports will include ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV and ESPN+, offering viewers a variety of NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college sports content.
Venu Sports announced as brand for ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery joint sports streaming service - Yahoo Sports
This will not have NBC/Peacock or CBS/Paramount+ programming.

Launch Price of Venu Sports is $43 (guaranteed for 12m if you sign up at launch). 7-day free trial
Channels: - ESPN
- ESPN2
- ESPNU
- SECN
- ACCN
- ESPNEWS
- ABC
- FOX
- FS1
- FS2
- BTN
- TNT
- TBS
- truTV
- ESPN+
This does NOT have CBS Sports Network, which will have 4 of our games + C-USA championship, but should have coverage of the other 8 games. It is currently the least expensive option, but will likely see price increases.
