Next 8 games on the road...some tough opposition too. Can we salvage a couple of wins, maybe go 2-6 on this trip?
Arizona is 0-2 vs. CUSA this year, losses to DBU and NMSU. But they are also on a current 8-game win streak, so they appear to have righted their early season woes. I'm hoping we can maybe steal one out there.
Trip starts tomorrow night at ULL, weather permitting.

5-3 would be huge
4-4 would be manageable
3-5 is what I expect
But I could easily see 2-6 or 1-7 with this group
The team by themselves with their talent could go .500 or better. The problem is the serious lack of good coaching and anything resembling game winning coaching strategies. Burroughs won’t steal bases and he won’t bunt unless it’s a ridiculously obvious situation. He basically never tires to catch anyone off guard and play a game aggressively. Burroughs is the text book whatever happens, happens blah baseball coach. Louisiana high school baseball coaches are way better at scheming wins and taking the game to the opponent than Burroughs is. He come closer to pulling a rabbit out of his _ _ _ than to upset a favored home team. Go Dawgs do it yourselves or prove me wrong LB.
I agree, I think we are in 5 out of the 8 games late and coaching has us end up 3-5. Now whether that is them costing us a chance to pull it out or flat out causes us to lose from in front.. I won't try and predict.
An interesting and very sad state of affairs is that Warren Nolan has Tech projected to finish the year at 30-26. That means statistically speaking Tech is expected to go 5-17 the rest of the season. They also have the Dawgs going 9-15 (6th place) in conference which means from the current 6-3 the team will go 3-12 from here on. Now obviously all these presumed games have to be played out on the field and nothing on paper counts ahead of time, but what is real and undeniable is the perception of what a pretender to a legit baseball program Tech is thought to be.
Someone in another thread the other day mentioned they saw good things and a 40+ win season. It made me a little bit depressed, because I can see the potential wins on paper, but watching and listening to the games, it's hard for me to see those win materialize. I hope I am wrong.
I can’t imagine anyone thinking we’d win 40. Maybe it was the discussion about 40 not being enough? What brought up that discussion was that we were half way to 40 before the midpoint of the season.
Not only did they think 40+ wins but they think the staff has the team progressing...

Have a few good tests coming in the next few weeks Arizona, DBU, ULL again, looking forward to seeing how we handle the competition. Lane is up for the job, the coaching staff has the team growing. Lots of baseball left. I expect we will get to 41-43 wins on the year."

Tech starts the game in innings 1 and 2 with runners on 2nd and 3rd and can’t get a hit to score.
#6 and #10. Both 6 year players, can't get a base hit or a deep fly ball or even a 1 out grounder. #10's average has gone down 50+ points in the last 10 games and some "experts" think Comeaux should be the first out when we get Davis back.Quote:

Tech 5-1 but Burroughs ends a potential bigger inning by not bunting Myers to advance our 1 out runners to 2nd and 3rd. Followed by Ballard hitting into DP.
It was actually 0 out until Myers SO instead of sacrificing himself like a smart coach would’ve done.
Tech 5-2 after 4. Really need to keep the pressure on them and no more LB coaching brain farts.
Then #6 makes and error in left to give LaLaff a run. Of course LB would never pull #6 or #10, but neither are a good at the plate as Comeaux.

Tech goes up 7-2. Comeaux should be moved up in the order to get more at bats. He makes good contact and does well to not let the situation get to him like some of our players do.

Tech 7-2 after 6. Safford was moved to 3rd with Drost inserted to RF. Drost strikes out like he almost always does.
Maybe Drost is playing a different game than the rest of the players on the field???
Not sure why Burroughs is pitching Broderson 2 innings in a game 2 days ahead of a Friday night game when he could be very much needed. Then with Fouts calling pitches he loses the first batter to a walk after starting 0-2. Fouts seriously loves to waste pitches.
Drost doing his thing. He is so consistent, even Burroughs should be able to see it.

15 hits is great, but going hitless in the last 3 innings isn't.
Still putting Drost in a game at this point is nothing more than depriving someone else of an opportunity and some needed experience. Stop it!

That Etheridge is just wicked. I think our guys had put it on cruise control the last few innings at the plate, and then you face a thrower like Etheridge and that's what happens: zero offense. Not taking anything away from Etheridge, because he has good stuff, but our guys were sleepwalking at the end of the game...on offense, we were fine on defense.
And Meyers! what were you thinking? Play that ball on one hop and we get out of that inning posting a goose egg on the board. Sometimes our guys channel their Tee Ball days, picking clovers in the outfield and looking lost out there.
And, thrilled to see McConnell is fully recovered from his mini slump.
Overall, this was a good win.

Safford bounces his first throw to 1st, then strikes out, then can’t catch a pop up to let a 2 out runner score from 2nd base. That a boy Burroughs!
Zona scorers are worse than ours. Gave the batter a hit because Safford didn’t get a glove on the routine pop up.
Burroughs not developing competent backups makes him a bad coach. He moves Safford here and there like he’s good or something, haha. Safford will be back for his senior year too. Won’t that be fun.
We've probably got at least three guys who didn't make the travel squad who could play a better third base. Their hitting could be under .200 and be better than Safford's.Quote:

Now Safford misses a tag to keep their momentum going, but don't fret Harland is coming in to nail things down. First pitch hit scores a run to make it 6-1. With all Tech’s strike outs it’s very unlikely they’ll get enough runners on base to threaten making up this deficit.

LB has sucked for 8 years in that department. Year one he had Ostrander and still managed to screw things up.
Fouts’ bullpen pitching staff putting on an embarrassing performance. Maybe Burroughs will be sick enough of this crap after the season to finally do something about it. He should’ve known after last season.

I thought I heard that Comeaux’s natural position is 3rd base so play him there, bench Safford and put Evans at 1st. I hate it that Evans isn’t getting to play anymore. There was a time last year when he showed a lot of promise and then for some reason he got benched.

Then LB starts coaching...calls a hit and run with his worst contact hitter at plate. Suddenly two outs instead of one at worst.
Burroughs destroys Comeaux on the bases getting him thrown out running to 2nd while Safford strikes out. Either bunt Safford or sit him.
Caught a break on the road. Nice to get one. Hope we take advantage of it after over coaching in T of 2nd.
The runner to 1st may get thrown out. He looked like he tried to step on Comeaux's bag foot.
For those not watching the runner was out by a full step, so it wasn't close. LB was not upset with the decision to review so I think they may have looked to see if the step on Comeaux's foot was intentional. Whatever, it was a big nothing with the runner being called out.
Nichols has done his job tonight. Time for the offense to put a couple of more runs up.
Tech needs to get something going to score some more runs.

This loss is on Broderson and Bates, period. No one else, not LB or any other player. Those two had a 5-run lead and had to get only 3 outs. Bates got hammered.

At least start Bated in the 9th so he has a clean slate to work with. That was a bonehead move by the coach they may have set the collapse in motion

Schedule shows us playing @ ULM twice this month, that correct? Anyway, we have 15 conference games remaining, only NMSU is worse than us, but they are capable of beating us once in the three-game series. The other 12 CUSA games, including SHSU plus the three mentioned above, will all be very tough games for us. Going 6-9 in these 15 games is most likely. We also play ULM once or twice and Nicholls once. So maybe with some luck we can play right at .500 the rest of the regular season.
We won't win the conference tournament, not with our lousy pitching, so this season is effectively over. Listen for Burroughs on the radio today at 11:30 (I think) for the details to this weekend’s sweep by Arizona. It should be very interesting to hear his assessment of Saturday’s 5-0 implosion. I get it that they were at home and were the more fundamentally capable team, but our fielding mistakes and coaching blunders cost us a noteworthy win. Now it’s just another one of ESPN’s growing library highlights of La Tech’s ineptitude.
