Nov. 21, 2005
ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today that the Naval Academy has accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl Thursday, December 22 at 7:30 p.m. (PST) at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California against a Mountain West opponent. The game will be televised by ESPN2. The bid also came with a bonus as the Mids will have the opportunity to play in the Poinsettia Bowl in 2008, 2009 or 2010 if Navy is bowl eligible (Navy can pick the year).
"Blue sky, 72 degrees, palm trees and sunshine in December works for us," said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "A beautiful setting in a Navy city in one of the finest football venues in the country has everyone excited. We have had discussions with the Poinsettia Bowl executives for quite a while and their attention to detail and enthusiasm for our team and fans leads one to believe that this will be our finest bowl experience yet. Three bowl games in a row is historic for the Academy and our congratulations to Coach Johnson, his staff and our players for reaffirming that Navy is one of the finest football programs in the nation. Let's beat Army first, then take on the Mountain West for a fantastic finish to a historic season."
"What better way to kick off San Diego's newest bowl game than to have the United States Naval Academy as one of the teams," said Poinsettia Bowl President Doug Sawyer. "We couldn't be happier that the Naval Academy has accepted our invitation."
"What better way to kick off a new bowl game in San Diego than to have Navy play in it," said Poinsettia Bowl Chairman Doug Sawyer. "The Naval Academy has one of the most tradition-rich college football programs in the country, and we're so pleased the Midshipmen will be bringing their traditions and exciting football team to our community."
"I'm excited the team has achieved one of their goals, to have a chance to go to a bowl game, and I'm excited to be going to San Diego," said Navy head coach Paul Johnson. "I was lucky enough when I coached in Hawaii to play there in the Holiday Bowl. It's a great city and I'm sure the kids will have a great time. We are excited about it. We will talk about it today and then put it on the back burner. After today we won't mention it again until after the Army-Navy game. It's good to get it out of the way now. There's no question where our focus needs to be and will be."
The bowl bid is a landmark achievement for the football program as it marks the first time in school history that Navy has gone to three-straight bowl games. Navy can achieve another first by beating Army on Dec. 3 (2:30 p.m., CBS) and winning the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for a third consecutive year.
Tickets are on sale now at www.navysports.com(.) Tickets can also be purchased by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the Ricketts Hall Box Office. Tickets are $45 for club seats and $35 for field seats. Fans not able to attend the game can purchase tickets to send a Midshipman for $35.
"We strongly encourage Navy fans to buy their bowl tickets from the Athletic Association. Our goal is 20,000 tickets sold so it is very important for this year and for future bowl games that your purchase counts towards our allotment. If you can't make it to the game we ask that Navy fans buy two tickets for our midshipmen to attend the game. The donation is 100 percent tax deductible."

Maybe not that bad. Navy to Hawaii was wishful thinking on our part even though it made good sense. Our first concern regarding bowls (besides being 7-4) is for Fresno to go somewhere outside of the WAC. Our second concern is that at least one spot will remain open between Houston, Sheveport, Nashville, and Ft. Worth. We really need one of three CUSA teams to lose this week.

It sure does look like there is a good chance that the Dawgs might be spending Christmas on the Island.

That's weird. I'm quoting myself:laugh:  .
I was in San Diego when they announced this bowl in May. One of the suits said in the local paper a team like Navy would be great for their initial bowl (if they had a bowl-eligible team).
Call is bowl insider knowledge.:icon_wink

A little off the beat -
But I would much rather end up in Lafayette than in Hawaii - even if it means we play ULM in Lafayette....

I think that there is a decent chance that a 6-5 Tech team goes to Hawaii IF Nevada gets that Emerald Bowl bid.

Downside would be that the N.O. bowl is on a Tuesday while the Hawaii bowl is on a Friday.... not that I can make it to Hawaii regardless.

Dwayne,
I just can not believe you said this........ You would rather see us play NLU than a CUSA team!!!! We have to go to Hawaii if it is offered.

I'm being selfish -
I can can justify the $$$ for three days in Lafayette - I can't justify the amount I would have to spend to go to the islands -
I would just rather them go to a bowl I can attend, thats all -
I'm not saying to not accept the ANY bowl invitation -
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
If we plan on showing up, playing CUSA in Hawaii would be good for us. For selfish reasons, I'd rather see us go to a bowl that I can get to. But I'll say this, I'd rather beat a sunbelt team in NO than lose to a CUSA team on the Island.
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Would you rather see a whole side of Tech fans in Lafayette cheering on the dogs against an past in state rival, or maybe 100-200 Tech fans cheering on a Tech team that doesn't travel all that well playing against a C-USA team that cares nothing about us or that bowl?

In all due respect, we have already beaten a SunBelt team this year which is one more a year than I would like to see us play. If anything it brought down our strength of schedule, as it will again next year. I would rather play a CUSA team, which I have no doubt we can beat than to ever have to play a SunBelt team........ It was bad enough when they included us in on their conference wins/losses stats in '04. The sooner that league goes away the better we will be. We have nothing to gain by playing them.

I don't disagree with you....I'm saying that a win over the sunbelt in the NO bowl would be far less counterproductive in relation to our conference situation (and what we want that situation to be) than getting blown out by a CUSA team on the Island while 5 Tech fans cheer. Understand, I'm not saying we would lose in Hawaii. But, with JBIII and the party rumors, that would be a great place for us to blow it. I'll be stoked about whatever invite we get.

Can you read? I said (other than being 7-4)!
Once again, you people who come on here a poo poo bowl discussion kill me. This is what college football is all about. Talking bowl possibilities and having fun doing it. Of course we haven't experienced it is several years, so I wouldn't expect some of you to understand that.

One other thing to consider -
I think that if we go to the islands it could get ugly - just don't think they would have the same FOCUS they would have in Lafayette -
However - ANY bowl is better than NO bowl at all -
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
I would say to Oaks to take the NO bowl, and tell Jack that if he wants a job at Tech next year he must win by at least 35.

Thats my point.
Want to be clear, the N.O. bowl and the Hawaii bowls are both at the bottom of my wish list. I'd just rather go to a game I can attend.
Plus, it would be fun to wax ULL on their home field like we always do.
I think I hear HD coming, duck!!! Incoming!!!!

Or ULM
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
We need a regional bowl to PROVE once and for all to the naysayers that Tech travels well regionally. It will bode well for our future bowl chances to have this opportunity.
If it is the NO bowl, I would prefer it to be ULM because I don't want people to mix up the idea that ULL fans came out for the game with the number of Tech fans that travelled for the game.
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
I'd much rather get to go see the Dogs in person vs. a Sun Belt team in Sun Belt country vs. an old rival than have to watch a poorly attended bowl game on tv. That just makes Tech look worse in the public's eyes. A sellout game in Lafayette full of Tech fans would look much better.

Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Looks like BYU will accept the MWC's Las Vegas Bowl bid and Colorado State will play Navy in the Poinsettia.
Utah has scheduled a 3:00 pm press conference today to announce its bowl bid. This bid burts big time because all BYU had to do was beat the Utes last Saturday.

Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
thats good.
now maybe nevada can knock them off and get themselves in a better bowl.
just like we need to knock off boise and/or fresno and get a bowl period.
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
If Nevada knocks off Fresno then we can't finish better than second in the WAC. We need Nevada to lose and us to win the next two games for us to be in the best position possible.

To at least guarantee us a spot in the Hawaii bowl as a last resort, we need Nevada to get an invite to the Emerald Bowl or some other non-WAC bowl.

Not really a nerve, just a pet peeve. The "just beat Boise first" comments bother me because I'm enjoying it while I can. I have not forgotten who coaches our team.

Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Utah's Emerald Bowl bid means all MWC eligible teams have been placed except for New Mexico.
Also official that the Independence will have an SEC team (barring a BCS shakeup) since the Music City has announced that it is taking an ACC team.

Looking more and more like Hawaee or Lafayette -

New Mexico takes conditional invite to Fort Worth bowl
Updated: Nov. 22, 2005, 5:57 PM ET
Associated Press
ALBUQUERQUE -- New Mexico has received a conditional invitation to play in the Fort Worth Bowl at Amon Carter Stadium.
The Lobos will participate in their fourth-straight bowl appearance if the Big 12 Conference or Conference USA does not have enough bowl-eligible teams following this weekend's games.
New Mexico had a chance to clinch a bowl bid but lost Saturday to Air Force, putting the Lobos postseason chances in jeopardy.
The Lobos finished the regular season 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain West Conference, tying Utah for fourth place. A bowl appearance this season for the Lobos would set a school record. New Mexico is the only team in its conference to play in a bowl game each of the past three seasons.
The Lobos have a 2-6-1 record in bowl games, having lost four straight. New Mexico's last bowl win was 28-12 over Western Michigan in the 1961 Aviation Bowl in Dayton, Ohio.
Head coach Rocky Long said he's thrilled about the team's prospects of playing in the Fort Worth Bowl.
"Participating in a fourth-straight postseason game would be a great reward for our coaches and players -- especially our 22 seniors -- who have worked so hard," he said.
The Forth Worth Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 23 on the campus of Texas Christian University. ESPN will televise the game at 6 p.m. Mountain Time that day.

Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Let Nevada go to Hawaii and play in front of 500 Hawaiians. I would much rather go to Lafayette with 7,000 Tech fans and play whoever. Sounds like a lot more fun than sitting on my ass in front of the TV watching the Dawgs across the pond. Beat Boise! What about GMAC. Is that still possible.
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
All these bowls locking up crappy teams so early. This is stupid! A 6-5 New Mexico? Gimme a break. Yeah, I can see the Ft Worthless Bowl taking a 6-5 NM if they were desperate, but now!?
Sure hope the Dawgs aren't 8-3 with a national TV road win over Fresno....and bowl-less. Well, let me clarify, I hope Tech finishes 8-3, just not out of the bowl picture.
One thing is clear, the bowls will not be interested in 6-5 Tech. I suppose some of the bowls, that have already extended invitations, figure Tech will finish 6-5.
Hmmm, it's time our guys took an "us vs. the world" attitude, strap on some body armor, and go to war!
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Tech can't finish 8-3 and be bowl-less. 8-3 would lock up one of the two WAC guaranteed bids since Tech would be tied with the Fresno State-Nevada winner for first place ahead of Boise State and the Fresno State-Nevada loser.
-
Re: And so it begins....Navy accepts Poinsettia Bowl bid
Sounds to me like we need to start praying that whoever can lose in CUSA does!!!!!

Well....you know what I meant.
How 'bout this, a 7-4 Tech, with an exciting 1 pt loss @ Fresno, and the Ft Worthless stuck with a boring 6-5 Mexico de Nuevo. My point is, there is Tech, and possibly other teams, that might be 5-4 right now, and finish out with two HUGE wins and the bowls would have salted away the slots. I realize UNM's "invitation" is conditional, but I think that bowl could have waited and UNM would still have been available.
And no, I have not studied every team's current record and remaining schedule to see what the possibilities are.
