Foolishly early football poll
Guess the dawgs record...
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I went with 5-7, but last time we had 3 wins in a season the next year we won the wac and went to a bowl, so who knows.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
foolishly early, indeed. but we know just about as much about our '07 season right now as we will on august 31. the arkansasbob foolishly early realistic optimist pick is 6-6.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I went with 6-6 for the sole purpose that I can see the anything from 4-8 to 8-4. I don't see us finishing anything beyond those records.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
7-5...and i have no explanation for that prediction.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
8-4. I think the new attitude will carry us a little further than some think...
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
i say 7-4. I like the look of our staff...Dooley, Scelfo, Spangler. Plus our dawgs will be ready to hit someone when season starts.

What, are we going to tie one game?:D

i mean 7-5, thanks for catching that. It's early, coffee hasn't kicked in yet.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I said 5-7. With a little luck, 6-6. I think the key is whether or not we can hold service on our home court against Hawaii and SJS. I just don't see us matching up with BSU (yet).
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I said 5-7 as well. Very good shot at 6-6. I do think we will be much more competitive in those 6 or 7 losses though. I don't see us folding up tents and getting blown out a whole lot like the last few years. I think we have a tough schedule to contend with.
Without even looking at the schedule I am predicting we improve by about 3 wins during Dooleys second year and probably go bowling.

We will be better than some of you think. Coaching was holding us back.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I put 7-5, but I really wanted to pull the trigger on 8-4. And, I do expect to be proud of our team this fall! I expect to WANT to be at all of the games this year!

Re: Foolishly early football poll
We'll beat Central Arkansas, Idaho, and San Jose and that's it.

Why San Jose instead of, say, Utah State?

Oh really? San Jose State is picked to be ahead of Ole Miss this season. And, I'm wondering how we'll beat Idaho and lose to USU (considered by many to be the worst team in the nation).

We didnt exactly set the world on fire against Utah St. last year. I'm wondering when the last time San Jose put two good seasons together. They could be in for a big big let down....certainly if they are beaten by us.

Re: Foolishly early football poll
7-5, because the football gods have smiled favorably upon Dooley's Dawgs...

No, we didn't set the world on fire against USU, but we did beat them. We did not beat Idaho. The last time SJSU put together back to back bowl seasons was 86-87. But, the defense that held BSU to 23 points returns 7 and they have the best DBs in the WAC along with one of the best running games. SJSU could be the WAC sleeper for a conference title (odds on them winning it are definitely better than they are for Nevada or FSU).
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I have put alot of thought into this question. I don't see us going no worse than 5-7. I personally think 6-6, with a 7-5 with a little luck. Its not like these guys are walking into a school w/ no talent. I have felt for years that we have had talent to go 7-5, consistently and be in top 3 in the WAC year in and year out. We have never had the coaching staff to do it, loser attitudes are so contagious. 6-6 is where I am thinking and that is pretty good considering the scheduling and first year for these coaches.

San Jose played their best game of the season against BSU last year. If they had played BSU ten times, it would have been blow out city 9 of the 10. San Jose contending for the WAC title is ridiculous. Hawaii and BSU are untouchable and will be for the next 5 years.

untouchable. 5 years. ummm...that's a bit of a reach...

Oh, and 6-6 this year...the first of a three year plan in building a team that will become annual contenders for the conference title and have a shot at a big bowl within 5.

BWAAAAAHAAAAAAA!      . I just spit Pepsi all over my keyboard. Even with 21 seniors gone and 4-5 of those guys gone to the NFL, it will be tough to hang 45 on the BEARS. You might win in this our rebuilding year, I'll give you that..but not with a 5 touchdown lead...no..not even if we were Arkansas State.... ..who by the way I found out loves you guys...:D

Re: Foolishly early football poll
You know nobody thought we could beat Alabama and we did, nobody thought we could beat Michigan State and we did. I was there when we fought tooth and nail against Oklahoma State every step of the way to beat them and we were definitely not favorites in that game. Nobody thought we would go to Fresno State year before last and whip them up and down their own field like they were puppies. Nobody chose us to be the WAC champs the year we joined and it doesn't seem like to me anybody other than us ever expects a thing from us. And I can't help it, I know I shouldn't but I expect we could beat anybody we ever play - and that includes LSU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, BSU and anybody else that comes down the pike depending on the day! I know in my head it logically it does not make sense to think we will beat an LSU or an A&M, but God help me, my heart tells me YES we can - because anything can happen, and just in case we do, I damn sure want to be there and see it when it does. Now I don't know how many games we will win this year for sure, but I ain't about to start this year thinking we are going to lose any of them!!! And thats how we should ALL be thinking. A positive attitude, a desire by each and everyone of us to win might just will it to happen!

Does UCA have a defender that can cover Dennis Morris? Most BCS teams don't so I doubt a FCS school can. Maybe someone that can match up against Brian Jackson or Josh Wheeler (especially his leaping ability). Who do you have that can slow down A-Train coming across the middle? And more importantly who on your defense can stop Patrick Jackson?

Tech will not lose to LSU by only 14 pts. However, I think Tech can win 4 to 5 games. Rome wasn't built in a day, but the future is bright for Tech.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
Here is my foolishly early spread predictions:
UCA Tech favored by 27(probably no official line on this one though)
Hawaii Tech underdog by 17
CAL Tech underdog by 31(ouch)
Fresno Tech underdog by 14.5
Ole Miss Tech underdog by 14.5
New Mex Tech underdog by 6.5
Boise Tech underdog by 21.5
Utah St Tech favored by 13
Idaho Tech favored by 14.5
LSU Tech underdog by 31
San Jose Tech underdog by 6.5
So think I will vote for 5 wins, 7 losses and consider that a good year.

I don't know. It all depends on how the scoring goes. For example scoring like LSU takes a 28-7 first half lead and Tech comes back in the second half scoring 14 to LSU's 7 is very likely. Not saying that is how the game goes down but it sounds like a reasonable prediction.

You are right, nothing about college football is predictable. I just think LSU has too much on defense and offense to just beat Tech by 14.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I believe we will go 8-4 with our schedule working out like this:
Central Arkansas- W 31-10
Hawaii- W 38-24
Cal- L 42-17
Fresno State- W 28-24
Ole Miss- L 35-10
NMSU- W 24-3
Boise State- L 41-31(I hope not)
Utah State- W 34-13
Idaho- W 41-17
LSU- L 49-10
SJSU- W 24-10
Nevada- W 38-35
GO DAWGS!!!!!

Re: Foolishly early football poll
If we can hold Hawaii to 24 and NMSU to 3, there's no way Ole Miss (possibly the 6th or 7th best O we face) puts 35 up on us.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I hate making these kinds of predictions without seeing our team play, so I won't. Here's my .02: We would win 5 games with Bicknell still coaching. More than that, everybody would be demanding that we end up at least 6-6. We had a very green team last year and we battled the injury bug. I made the statement that the major key to success at our level was coaching at he respective Coordinator levels. I think we'll see a huge difference.
If we win that Hawai'i game, there's no telling what might happen next. I will say this, the WAC is going to be stout top to bottom this year. Fresno State will be back. Boise State will be strong. Hawai'i, depending on their receivers and defensive coordinator, could have a very special year. I also expect improvement in San Jose (beat pac10 in a bowl). I don't know about Nevada, since they lost the qb. You can bet that New Mexico State will resemble last year's Hawai'i (their qb is that good). WAC teams will make a huge statement out of conference. Back to my first thought, if we beat Hawai'i, I wouldn't want to play us. I don't care if it's Cal, Ole Miss, Boise, or LSU.
-
Re: Foolishly early football poll
I was thinking about Ole Miss. I know they've had all kinds of recruiting hype since coach O arrived, they haven't produced. The only team in the SEC they're projected to be better than is Vandy...their one spot ahead of Vandy according to Lindy's. They return a decent amount on O, but their O was #111 in the country last year.
I'm counting 4 returners on a D that was #76 mainly because of Patrick Willis. I think there are at least 3 conference games that will be tougher than our game with Ole Miss: BSU, Hawaii, SJSU...
Freson, Nevada, and NMSU could easily be added to that list. Perhaps Ole Miss would be in the top half of the WAC...perhaps not.

I agree that Ole Miss isn't one of the more intimidating teams on our schedule. But, I think you'll see a distinct homefield advantage return to Aillet this year. I believe this team will be so good at home that we'll have a chance to win every game in Ruston. We have to play Ole Miss at their place after we play at Fresno State, that's a tall order.

Good point. And I agree about seeing a new home field advantage at The Joe next year. Very possible to take all of our home games. I believe Boise will be the most difficult home game ahead of us.

I was just thinking that the Ole Miss game would be a letdown for us. We seem to always have a letdown game every year after a hard fought win. And Ole Miss could surprise some people.

The more you people rag on Ole Miss, the more you will have to choke on those words after they demolish us. We probably won't score a point on Ole Miss. Remember, this is the same team that nearly beat Alabama and LSU last year and all of a sudden that can't be La.Tech?? As Bill O'reilly would say " That is the most ridiculous item of the day".

Who is this we you speak of? You are actually counting yourself as part of Tech now? Based on your negativity and ignorance of the program all I can assume is you are one of those Tech students who spends all his time watching LSU.
But yes Ole Miss had some close games last year. I can play that game to. This Tech team is built on some guys that beat Fresno at Fresno 2 years ago that almost beat USC...that almost beat Texas in the national title game. Come on....seriously. JL also made a comment that Ole Miss just lost their best defensive player along with several of those starters that almost beat Bama (who gives a crap anymore) and EBRCP. If you think Ole Miss did anything last year that isn't due to Willis then you are smoking something.

Persnickety, you are way too young to be so cynical. All gloom and doom. Try looking up for a change and say something positive. I am starting to wonder why in the world you are at Tech. You seem to despise it so...:(

Re: Foolishly early football poll
Though the dogs of the past have suffered "let downs" after big wins, I do not believe that such psycological traits of our past will find a place under Dooley's regime. Again, look at the two games Ole Miss plays before they play us - Florida and Georgia. It is hard for me to believe that Ole Miss will win either of these games much less come through without several injuries. It appears to me that we are going to be playing Ole Miss at a perfect point in the schedule to pull out a win. Either way, I will be there. My only concern is SEC officials. However, if the WAC football officials are anything like the WAC basketball officials, we may be better off with SEC officials. Having SEC officials did not seem to be to bad for us against Alabama.

Either way, we need to hand-off to Thomas Graham some more. If you ever tried tackling an 18-wheeler you would know what I am talking about

actually, that was my impression of bobby ray tell in high school (in my first ever high school jamboree). he looked like he was going to run over me at full speed, but blew right by while i was still bracing for impact. so yes, i know what you're talking about. if thomas graham can make d1a defenders look like 10th-graders in their first ever high school jamboree, then we need to hand it off to him on every odd down!

You are probably correct. But it all depends on how you look at it. Will they be down and out and ready to lay down when Tech comes to town or will they be hungrier for a win knowing that wins will be few and far in between this season?? Also, it doesnt matter what Ole Miss does, a Tech team that was pathetic on offense still has to go into Oxford and beat them. I love all of the confidence you guys have in our team, but just ask Dooley how easy it'll be in Oxford. His answer will be very different from you guys. He knows Ole Miss better than anybody.

do you think dooley would say we have no chance to win (even if you could get an honest answer out of a coach about something like that)?
