Guess what, Jim? Women's basketball doesn't generate money and men's basketball does. I still can't get over the time when he bragged that we are the only institution in the country that spends more on women's basketball than basketball...
Congratulations on the $1.1 million Louisiana Tech received from the WAC. I'm sure you will put it to good use.
There's a debate going on at the NT fan site regarding an Eastern WAC if any of you wish to provide some input. Here's the link -

I would certainly be in favor of bringing in UNT, ASU, and ULL to form an eastern WAC division.
Once again the facts haven't gotten in the way of a story.
Tech's 2005-2006 total NCAA and conference distribution was $1,123,872 according to the Agreed Upon Procedures Report instead of $667,000. Also the 2004-2005 Agreed Upon Procedures amount was $1,326,783 instead of the approximately $900,000 quoted.
that would be great.
the one problem with it is getting NMSU and Utah St to go along with it. while travel expenses for Tech would drop dramatically, it would rise just as much for those 2 schools. throw in 3 more place mats to split the small payouts to the schools. it will be a hard sell to the other 8 WAC schools. for us it would be great though... :)
its too bad they didnt jump at the chance to do so before idaho was added as the 9th team. that would have put utah st in the west.
hawaii
san jose
fresno
nevada
boise
utah st.
nmsu
unt
tech
ull
asu
12th team
the 12th team could be a team that moves up like texas st or missouri st or a team that is already moving up in wku.
in all honesty, though, that would be the most lopsided conference breakdown I've ever seen. I do not believe any of the western schools would have paid any attention to a proposal such as this.
I think we'd be better off sticking with the WAC 9 , then seeing if it's possibly to establish a Western 18 championship (MWC #1 vs. WAC #1, held during the conference championship week) or something. Anyone know if something like that is possible? I think it would be pretty cool and pretty good for both conferences.
no way would that ever happen. the MWC broke off from the WAC because they didn't want to split their money with the "weaker" WAC teams. no way would they do anything that would bring them closer to the teams they view as weaker than them.
for better or worse, Tech is in the WAC until the next round of conference alignment. we can dream about other conferences, but that won't happen for about 10 years. as long as the WAC can keep up its high profile, it will be good for Tech. hopefully soon Tech can be the WAC team getting the BCS bowl bids
the best possible outcome for Tech would be a disaster for a C-USA school. either UAB is forced by the board of regents in Tuscaloosa to drop football...or Tulane just can't make it work post Katrina. that would be the only way (reason for) Tech to move conferences in the next 10 years.
Does it have to be called a conference championship game if it's a game between two conferences? Is it possible, per NCAA rules, to stage a game between teams not yet decided at a neutral destination?
With regards to the MWC saying no, this is possible, but not necessarily true. If they are not going to be guaranteed a BCS birth as a conference by themselves, would they rather have an equal chance of getting a slot in any given year as other mid-major conferences (let's say that gives them about a 1 in 3 chance, because I think the only serious competitors are the WAC, MWC, and CUSA), or establish an allaince that guarantees them a 1 in 2 chance (winner of the MWC-WAC game gets an automatic invite perhaps)? I'd think an extra shot at several million dollars would be enough to make them change opinions about sharing $ with WAC teams.
I would bet that when the ladies were drawing 4,000 plus to home games that they did make money. What would it take to get the recruits to come to TECH again. Can Barmore be given a title similar to Malone. Would that make the players more interested to come to TECH if he was somehow involved.
Todd Dodge has already reaped great rewards for UNT, but the question for many is whether he can coach at the d1a level. And before you target the Sun Belt, we are still talking about a high school coach, along with high school assistants, who will be matching wits and game plans against seasoned college coordinators and head coaches. What's your honest opinion?
Tylerdawg, do you mean that Dodge is expected to move on to a better job after a few years? If so, many NT fans understand that that will probably happen. With Riley at NT, and depending on if Riley redshirts or not, plus Todd has a young daughter, others believe he will stick around for 5-6 years, if we're lucky. The unknown is whether he moves on to the Cowboys after a couple of years at NT. You know he was interviewed by Parcells last year. Time will tell how all of this works out.
Oh yeah, it's gonna be tough at first. Thats why a few posts back I said UNT is going to have a good team in a couple of years. Dodge has brought a few former college coache in there. I know one of them. There will obviously be a learning curve but UNT will be fine.
earlier there was talk of a wac eastern conference, and so heres the general oppinion of the western wac school's fans:
"We dont want to expand east, we tried that before, la tech really doesnt fit graphicly" Im sorry to say this but although the conference wont kick out la tech it wont expand east either. Right now most of the wac fans are looking for teams that would strengthen our position against the mtn west and are not concerned about the eastern things out here by la tech.
i still say it would be best to trade us to the mwc for unlv and sdsu. maybe right now that doesnt look good for the mwc, but in 2-3 years, we can make ourselves attractive to them. after the trade, they could add utep and/or houston from cusa.
WAC:
Hawaii SDSU
San Jose Fresno
Nevada UNLV
Idaho Boise
Utah St. NMSU
MWC:
Utah BYU
Wyoming Air Force
Colorado St. New Mexico
UTEP Houston
TCU Louisiana Tech
CUSA:
Tulsa SMU
Rice Tulane
USM UAB
Memphis Marshall
ECU UCF
Does anyone know how much of a budget WBB has in comparison to MBB?
Funny thing is some on the NTexas board think they would get an invite from CUSA, I really doubt that SMU would allow that to happen when they compete for the same TV market area.
WBB is easy...that's $0. There is no NCAA revenue distribution from any single sport except men's basketball. Even if there was revenue distribution, there wouldn't be any from WBB since the tournament loses money....almost $6 million for the 2005 tournament. Teams do get expenses reimbursed and per diem for the travel parties, but that's it.
$176,874 was the per unit value for the men's basketball revenue distribution this past April that included 750 units from the 2001-2006 tournaments. And on top of that men's teams get expenses reimbursed and per diem for the travel parties just like the women.
SMU doesn't drive the bus.:) CUSA has 2 in Houston. Tulsa & UTEP especially would love trips to the metroplex every year vs every other year as the both recruit the area heavily and both have sizable alumni numbers that would enjoy see there team annually rather than every other year. UNT may or may not gain entry into CUSA, but either way SMU alone won't be a big factor.
I mean recruiting wise he has made the most of his opportunity so far.
IF he does not win or show HUGE improvement, like putting up alot of points and having a FUN offensive system to play in, his window to recruit like he has will be gone.
The other schools schools, media, and coaches, will start to say he is over his head.
NOW with that being said, I believe Dodge will win the SBC or compete for the SBC crown every year. I think he will be sucessful in the SBC.
