New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
Coach Dooley has released his football camp brochure sneaking on the cover the new LA TECH word mark. You like it?

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
This is only part of the new word font, logo. I like this part...

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I have never liked "LATECH." I much prefer "LTU" over "LATECH."

The media refers to us as "Lah Tech" so, we might as well run with it. No sense fighting it, the media will call us whatever they want to.
Prime example:
The majority of us know Tulane is pronounced "Two Lane", but the many media personnel refer to Tulane as "Tuh Lane". No matter how much the Tulane people remind them, it doesn't change.

This will be just one of a set, if people are going to call us La Tech then we should probably have a word mark to cover it.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
It is one of the sharpest things I have seen Tech put out in a very long time. VERY NICE! I love the blue "La" - makes it part of the state emblem with the "TECH" standing out. VERY SHARP!
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I don't like or hate La Tech but I hate LTU more than anything in the world.
I like the way the color and font looks on this brochure though. Pretty cool.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I like it! Also, check out the calendar. :)

I agree. Louisiana is a five syllable word, and broadcasters just aren't going to take the time to pronounce a word that big. Sounds crazy, but that's why it happens most of the time.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I think marketing-wise it's a good move to start using the LA TECH...kinda like how Kentucky Fried Chicken went to KFC. Everyone know what it means but it's easier to say. Buskirk knows what he's doing. I trust him.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I like LaTech, but not sure I like this logo. Seems patched together to me.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
The more I look at it the more I wish we would put the dot or a space after the A.
LA. TECH or even LA TECH is better than LATECH. The way they have it almost reminds of the word LATEX.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I love the logo and color scheme. It looks sharp and 1st class in my opinion.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I don't like the shape they have made of the state. Otherwise I guess its fine and dandy.

I agree, exactly with what you said. I wasn't sure what didn't look right until Dawgmatic's post.

I think you're right. The area of the Florida parishes is too big making the state look squat and fat-like me. It throws off the whole design, imo.

Thats it! The design is thrown off and the state looks squashed up and fat. You have hit the nail on the head my good man. You know I like Derek Dooley just fine. But he ain't the GOD of design or a good judge of it either apparently. And if our LOGO was our biggest issue we needed to solve I'll kiss a bulldog's hind foot. He better win some football games.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
My gosh, we're debating on whether the state of LA is perfect. It's a logo! And we need to make our logo easier to replicate so we can market it better.

I could give a flip how accurate it is from a geographic standpoint. If it makes us more money, do it!!

I'm not saying it needs to have every little nook and curve that the state has. I just made an observation that the state looks squat and fat. I didn't realize it was harder to duplicate a streamlined state as opposed to a squat fat state. But the fact still remains that the title of the thread asked if we liked it or not. We answered. If the criticizms aren't wanted, then maybe you should suggest to our illustrious photographer not to ask our opinions.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I like it. I would probably drop the concentration of white flecks in the border just a little bit but I think it's cool, despite the shape of the state.

It seems to me the old one has been replicated plenty of times with no difficulty. Just an observation. I don't care what they do but something better than the logo needs to change.

Oh well, I am sure others here will thank you for asking so I could go through that long drawn out explination of "La(h)".
(I told you guys this was fun!)
No, I really won't go through the whole thing again but I will explain.
"La" translated is the female specific definite article "the". Or the female bulldog of Tech.
Go Tech Bitches!

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
Oh, and I like the look of this. The font, the state, the brochure. It all looks really good.
I'll never buy it because it says "la" on it. But what is one less customer?

The "specks" are from Dooley's brochure . . . not part of the so-called official logotype.
And, Dirty, at least you got it right about ILLUSTRIOUS. (Neve done one of these BB&B polls before. It's fun.

I have a question on this point. This isn't just directed at you because you aren't the only one who has mentioned this in the past. And it's a serious question. I'm not trying to be a smartass. But...do those of you that use this argument really believe that the general sports' public is going to go the extra length it requires to make this observation. Granted, my brain doesn't function like the majority of folks, but when I'm watching a sport's contest, I never get into the nuances of what their names could be interpreted as in other languages. As far as those who are looking for something that they can use to try to demean us, it doesn't matter what we call ourselves. They will find something. Heck, as has been said, we are Louisiana Tech now, but that doesn't keep others from attempting to come up with derogatory nicknames. Lousyiana Tech is one that I think of at first thought. Heck, people still call us Lolly Polly. I mean. Seriously, do you all really believe that a generic sports' fan watching La Tech beat the hell out of Ms. State is going to say, "Hey, they're really calling themselves bitches in Spanish.?
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
You know. After looking at it and thinking about it, I wonder if we could make the Florida parishes more to scale which would then enlarge the "ECH" of Tech. Keep the LA the same size which would make it smaller than the whole "Tech" and therefore deemphasize the "LA" and put more focus on the "Tech". I wonder if Q, or someone, could work something up based on this to see what it would look like.

You can be a smartass on that one. We play on the same stage as the Hokies and the Cocks and some people think we will get picked on for a ridiculous translation of one word of our abbreviated name.

 I know I could have been, but I am genuinely interested in hearing what they have to say about it. I figured, to get a serious answer, it would be better for me not to do what comes naturally.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I've never came across anyone using "LA TECH" as a derogatory nickname. If someone does say la tech, i'm not offended. Most non-tech people thinks it's our short hand name.

I agree, I don't do that either. But since you asked I have been thinking and I can't think of any school who's name could be translated to another language. Can you? So to have never of done that shouldn't surprise anyone because you can't. Let me ask you this. Have you ever seen or heard of a mascot and thought about what it was or what it looked like?

I realize you can't stop it. But we made a conscience effort to name our female sports "Lady Techsters" because calling our lady athletes "Lady Bulldogs' or "bitches" was NOT exceptable. The only thing worse than calling our lady athletes female bulldogs would be to call our male athletes female bulldogs.
It's done. I understand. It started a long time ago (even though we had a "standards" policy that STILL doesn't allow it) and allowed others to do whatever they wanted. The point is when you abreviate Louisiana you turn it into a word that is not english but is a word in other languages. One of which is the most widely spoken language in the world and a close second in our country (I wonder if you look at the areas marketed by our conference which language in more prominent) in which it implies female.
If we are going to use "La(h)" we better define what the meaning is. Instead of letting others interpret it for us.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
Don't know if anyone had Speech class with Dr. Minchew at Tech...but if you did you might remember he was extremely adamant on how the state we lived in was to be pronounced.
He said the correct way was to say: loo-z-ana(soft emphasis on the Z) NOT la-wee-z-ana
If he heard a student in his class pronounce it --la-wee-z-ana he would fail them-period..
He maintained and is correct that the state was name in honor of King Louis XIV..
and of course his name was pronounced : loo-is...
The actual name was" la louisiane" or the Land of Louis.
I can see both sides of this squabble....if the broadcasters in La had from the beginning of time taken Dr. Minchew's correct prounciation of the word ..we wouldn't have the national media saying that the name has too many sylables or whatever...
I have done commercial production and voice work throughout our state and other states and always use Dr. Minchews prounciation---never had it thrown back at me for re-do.
I just wish all broadcast would pronounce it the proper way...
as far as print....I really don't see any problem....the U.S postal service has subscibed all states to a standard abbreviation...our state is La.
So when people see the "La" they don't really see or think LAH...?? In their minds they see Louisiana.
When you see the abbreviation "Al." do you think Al or Alabama.."Tx" is what -Tex or Texas etc.
I like the new logo--a lot!
It will not be hard for me to refer to Tech as LATECH cause I'll probably always say it
Loo-z-ana Tech:D

I always thought that it was named after King Louis and Queen Anne hence, the Louisiana with "i" pronounced like the long "e" since that is the French conjunction "and" I thought. So, I thought it was Louis and Anne. La Louisiane.

My point wasn't that people try to change the name of a school to that from something of another language. Simply that they change the name at all as a joke. It doesn't happen unless the person has a personal reason, i.e rivalry, to do so.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
King Louis XIV wife's name was Marie...his mother was Queen Anna of Austria...
La Louisiane is french for "land of Louis" notice it the "e" at the end instead of "a"

Please don't think I was questioning you. Just stating what I always though, and I can't remember why I even thought that. Maybe the two times I had to take Louisiana History got the information mixed up in my head.

Are you kidding. We have the most recognizable logo and we should feel honored to use La Tech. It flows. Like Southern Miss and Ole Miss. It works and we should continue to use it. Say no to LTU.

I say no to both. I prefer Louisiana Tech. The word Louisiana. I just happen to think La Tech sounds...well I can't say the word on here to describe how I think it sounds (maybe a similie of a cat would work). :icon_wink:
Yes I know. Espn blah blah blah. And I'll get used to it maybe. One year I'll hear it and I won't cringe. I'll break the habit of hearing some ignorant commentator say it and screaming at the TV or the radio - IT'S LOUISIANA TECH YOU IDIOT. Or SAY THE WORD LOUISIANA YOU MORON. :o
I can't stop this from happening - the change that is. I can only voice my opinion - and it is only that. My opinion. :)

Being from Arkansas I was thankful to have instructors like Louisiana history teacher Morgan Peoples who told us the correct way to pronounce the state is "Looziana", after Lou, not Louise.
If you'd attend a few more classes we might get you educated Doc . . . . not!

So you think it looks better too? I think the map of the state speaks for itself. Except for geographically challenged people. :)

I wonder if latechsports.com will have all the logos, word marks, etc for download later. I would love to get my hands on the high res version of these graphics.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
Anyone know if the new secondary bulldog logo has been finished yet? I know they were updating/changing it as well.

I don't think it's better. The Florida parishes are still out of proportion.
-
Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
I like the Louisiana Tech TV logo. (The one on latechsports.com homepage) Unfortunately, that's too busy to have something like it (No film strip with a bulldog logo instead of a TV) for regular use.
qng001: You should tell Eric (ebuskirk@latech.edu) that it should be available in high resolution online. He definitely listens.

no not that part. the part that took the word louisiana out and let the map of the state speak for us. the map part still needs work. the other one is too BUSY and Squatty. but this one without the word just looks better aesthetically to me.

No no that's the one I like. Without the LA. Yours is better.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
The reason why I like "LA TECH" is because it is unique and not forgettable. It has the potential to stand out as our recognizable nickname on a national level if marketed correctly (with a winning program). I think it will be nothing but good for the program, and it is very smart to go forward with this. I like the original logo too.

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
Why try to change something the athletic dept. has worked on and came up with for us?
Just go with it.
Hey, at least now no one thinks about the stripes!

It's probably more easily reproduced in those colors. Much like the incorrect shape of the state.

Here's your (exact louisiana shaped) state-t. I found a road map of louisiana and layed it over with blue. It also has all the nice ridges of the river along the eastern part of the state. :D

I think it's just an optical illusion, seriously, the fade in the background messes w/ your eyes.

Yeah, but it looks great!
I like the spelled out "Louisiana" logo. (But, I'll like anything Louisiana Tech that doesn't sound like "lah")
I drew one with "Louisiana" in script above the state (between the boarders) in blue. It reminded me of the Lic & Lic plates with Louisiana in red on them. I was going to use it as my avatar but apparently it's an "invalid file type" and Doc can't help me.

Put it on myspace or something and link your avatar to the myspace link.
I tried and couldn't get it to work either.

If you have Paintshop Pro, you can convert many types of formats. There are formats in there I had never heard of.

if you copy it to paint (in xp or earlier versions of windows), i think it always converts it to a bitmap. is .bmp a valid file type?

Re: New Font, word mark with new logo . . you like?
You can always zoom in on the pic in your browser and print screen. Paste the image into paint, erase junk, save as .jpeg, and voila! Und keine Eier!
