Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
There's an interesting vote going on SportsNation about who is each team's greatest player ever. I'm including the Saints link (don't know why I'm being so nice) but you can go to each team from there
http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sports...?event_id=3588
Big Will is one of the Saints nominees and he's doing pretty well, but it's hard to vote against Archie.

Wow, Bobby Hebert is second, what is the point of even voting in a poll if a guy like him is 2nd?

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
Where is Champ110 when I need him? This is going to be announced on ESPN.COM on August 18. Now do you people want it to be a Tech man or Archie Manning???????????? VOTE for WILLIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
Do not forget Fred Dean with the Chargers
-
Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
The Colts have P. Manning ahead of Johnny U.
No way! not even close. Manning is good, of course, but in the context of all-time greats, there is none better than Johnny Unitas!
Goofy fans.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
Vote for Ravens - Matt Stover (getting creamed by Ray Lewis)
Steelers - Blonde Bomber (in a landslide)
Chargers - Fred Dean
Saints - Big Willie

There are a lot of youth/history battles that are going youth. Favre over Starr, Emmitt over Staubach, Manning over Unitas. Some may even be right, but it's likely it has a lot to do with people not knowing history well.

Sounds like we've got a chance for 2 out of 4 to win this here. Of course Stover probably won't win and Fred Dean has a tough time especially with the likes of LT and Seau fresh on people's minds

You're correct sir, even though Emmitt's running away with his....but nowhere near like the Lions

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
I voted for all four Tech guys. Kind of thought I might see Pat Tilley with the Cardinals, but he wasn't there...also no Mike Barber for the Rams.
If you are interested in Grambling players, Doug Williams is listed with the Bucs and Buck Buchanan with the Chiefs. Buck Buchanan only getting 1.5% of the vote is a great example of people not knowing their history. I have no argument against Derrick Thomas being number one, because he was awesome, but Buchanan being that low is ridiculous.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
That poll is Bo-oh-oh-gus! It has Hebert in the lead with 44%. Just another example of the battle we fight with South Louisiana for everything from dollars for Tech to new industry and the advantage they have because cajuns think birth control means Yvonne can hold in a baby bred in March until the end of duck season.
-
Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
I liked Hebert, but he shouldn't even be on that list. He was a personable, above average quarterback, but nothing more than that.
For that matter, Dalton Hilliard and Danny Abramowiczshouldn't be there either.
I was a homer and voted for Roaf, but I think Rickey Jackson should be the winner.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
Looking at the Steelers, 9 of the 10 players listed played in the 1970's. No wonder they dominated that era!

But aren't WE also falling into the same trap in making this basically a popularity/homer contest by voting only for 'Dawgs?? I have no issues against Terry for Pittsburgh but personally I'll vote for Morten Anderson over Willie for the Saints. Flame away!!!

Anderson's contribution is more obvious than Roaf's never missing a block the entire time he was with the Saints. It's all relative I guess.

Goes with the position, I guess. The O-line typically doesn't get much publicity unless they allow too many sacks. My choice of MA over Willie was that he was the bulk of the Saints scoring for most of his 13 years w/them plus the pressure of being a kicker is well known. If Willie missed a block ( and while he was awesome, I seriously doubt that he NEVER missed a block in 9 years ) there was the chance for one of his teammates on the O-line or a RB could pick up the defender. If Morten missed the kick then the entire stadium & TV audience saw it.

Actually I think Willie missed two blocks. Seriously.

Honestly, I DO find that believable considering how high he graded out after every game!! :) He was a terrific blend of athleticism, hard work & extreme intelligence.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
One of the most famous offensive lineman ever, Jerry Kramer, is remembered for one great block...the one against Jethro Pugh to get Bart Starr across in the Ice Bowl. Even though he was a great one, without that single block he might have be just another good lineman.
Probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but I always thought it was a little strange.

I was cheering for the Pack in the Ice Bowl!! I remember that play being shown over & over on TV & can not imagine what it would have been like to play football in that type of weather. I have been in Sakhalin Island, Russia on a work assignment & it routinely gets to -39 w/o a wind chill & it hurts just to step outside!! :rolleyes4: Can't fathom trying to hand onto a football.
Sometimes a player's career is made or ruined by his performance in a big game. For example, do U really think that Larry Brown would have commanded the big free agent bucks from the Raiders had he not had a career game in SB XXX & won the MVP award there. He certainly didn't do much in the following 2 years in Oakland ( 1 INT in 12 games ).
On the other hand, Grambling's own Everson Walls will forever be remembered for failing to stop Dwight Clark from making "The Catch" yet earlier in that same game he had made 7 tackles & 2 INTS. Plus he was the NFL DB of the year in '82 & made 4 Pro Bowls yet he himself states that he's not in the NFL HOF because ( partially ) of the negativity of not stopping that pass in '81. Might have some merit in his observation.

Willie will be the first player inducted into the Hall of Fame that played the bulk of his career with the Saints. That should be enough to keep a vote for him from being a "homer" pick.

Like Terry ( where there is little, if any ) room to argue, Willie certainly has the qualifications to represent the Saints ( so he doesn't fit my profile as a "homer" pick unlike those who vote for Stove Top & even Fred Dean - who IS worthy ) but your argument about being the first Saint in the HOF comes with a caveat. The only reason he's beating Morten Anderson into the HOF is that MA continued to play until last year ( & STILL might get a late season call to boot 'em again ). :) Willie Roaf most certainly deserves his place as an NFK HOF'er & I'd have NO problem w/his being the ESPN choice as best Saint ever!! Still, my OPINION still lies w/MA but he's not a choice so WR got my Saints vote.
FWIW - I voted for Seau ( Chargers ) & Lewis ( Ravens ) in the other 2 teams with ex-Dawg choices.

Not saying Morton Anderson isn't worthy, but I wouldn't count on him being an automatic pick. The HOF is "anti-kickite" as Seinfeld would say it.
There is only one pure kicking specialist in the Hall, Jan Stenerud.
I do hope that Stover can get in one day so TECH will have 4 members, but that may take an awfully long time.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
Archie is the top all-time Saint -
Better than Rickey, better than Morten, better than Hebert -
Archie Manning IS, WAS and ALWAYS WILL BE the NO SAINTS....

No flame here son. I voted for Archie.

I am surprised Ray Guy hasn't made it.

Re: Greatest Player Ever for NFL teams
It is awesome that we have so many on these lists. Dean is struggling for votes, and Roaf won't win his, but Bradshaw and Stover are winning with TB running away.

When did Barber play for the Rams? I thought he started and finished with the Oilers.
