Hines is out.

Re: Hines is out.
Probably a good move for the WR's and passing game but tough on other fronts. Conroy really cares about the kids and has worked tirelessly to help them fulfill their academic obligations and stay eligible and on track to graduate (which is why they are really here!!)
I wish him the best of luck and nothing but success in the future. I also want to thank him for his years of service to Tech.

I agree. I think the problems with our WR's is evidence enough of a needed change.
I wonder how this will effect recruiting?

Re: Hines is out.
I wonder if Dooley has replacement already in mind and I hope the new guy can recruit some more WR's with speed.

Thoughts on replacement??

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
I wonder if he had pressure to resign...
He's a Tech guy, so I wonder what endeavors he wanted to pursue. Very interesting. He did a lot of good things for our football program and student athletes.

Yes, in a positive way.

I have some free time, so I will get the ball rolling. What about Mike Norvell. He is an assistant with Tulsa. He played college ball at Central Arkansas. This past year was his first as a full time assistant coach. I don't know if we would be necessarily be offering anything more appealing to him. Anyway...here is a link to his bio.

I also like this Jason Nichols guy. He was one of the WR coaches for Toledo, a team with two 1,000 yard receivers. He played at ECU. He is another WR coach from a Non-BCS school that may want to make this move.

Norvell was a walkon at Tech before he went to UCA.

I also like former Kansas WR coach David Beaty, who was not kept by new coach Turner Gill
Kansas had two receivers that could CATCH THE BALL really well last season. The difference between Beaty and the first two guys I posted....Beaty is currently unemployed. He went to high school in Garland, TX, and he coached WRs at Rice before joining Kansas.

I, too, wonder what "other endeavors" he will be pursuing, and I wish him the best. I worked with him when I was teaching and he was always very helpful.
As for replacements, my wide-eyed wish would be for Tim Rattay. I figure he knows a thing or two about the position, and we need to go ahead and get him on staff. :D

I do wish Coach Hines and his family all the best in the world. He is a Tech man through and through. He really does bleed blue.

Before we start making stuff up, the answer to that is "No". Conroy made his own decision. If Dooley were changing coaches, he would have told the ones impacted weeks ago. Conroy made his own decision
Personall, I think 20 years is a long time under 4 different coaches and getting moved up, moved back, moved around, and never having any real continuity. Very loyal Tech guy and former Tech player. Never want to say anything negative about a former Tech player and alumni. I truly appreciate all their service and support to the University and the young men. We should wish all our young men and former Tech players well in future career.

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
Change I would like to see is someone do a better job in coaching our Corners on tighter and better coverage. We haven't looked good there for several years now. We can talk all day about how hard our safeties tackle, but how much do you want to see safeties doing the tackling and us loading up on run. We give up way too many 2nd and 3rd and long yardage pass plays.
Why we run block better than pass block on OL is another big question I have about that part of game.
We have some areas to clean up, get better players, and more experienced players.
A player I missed seeing this year and may never be the same for potential was young man from Homer. Made me sick when he tore knee up before this season. We could have really used him with 9 Toes on the mend all season.

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
I wish Conroy good luck but he near seemed to do much in the QB development department
-
Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
Conroy seems to have been a genuinely nice person, but it was time for a change. If the right replacements can be found, two more changes should be made.
-
Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
I heard Todd Berry was the leader, he really wants the job, he says he would rather be a position coach at an elite university than the head coach at a FCS school.
-
Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
Not a good enough coach for us though...

I'm under the impression that Spang and Dooley tell Terry Joseph what type of defensive scheme we're gonna run.

Wow, hard to believe that a hometown guy is gone. Conroy has been a great ambassador for the program and I hope that he departed on good terms because he can continue to be a voice for us in his next endeavor. Thanks Conroy, for the time and effort devoted to La Tech!

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
Can somebody please tell me what a wide receiver coach does? Does he teach them to catch? If that's the case we've needed a new one for several years now.

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
A true Tech guy, he gave alot to this university as a player and a coach. He also played a major role in making sure these players handled the academic side as well.
-

Best wishes Coach, in whatever you attempt! You are a credit to the University.

Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
ULM: We are hearing ULM will only hire 8 full-time assistants under head coach Todd Berry. Our sources tell us corners coach Darrell Perkins, safeties coach Mark Collins, wide receivers coach Marty Humphrey, running backs coach Bob Leahy, and tight ends / special teams coordinator Chris Vaszily will not remain on the staff. According to our source, offensive line coach Vance Vice, defensive line coach Everett Todd, and DC Troy Reffett will work for head coach Todd Berry. Illinois State OC Steve Farmer is on his way to Monroe. He will serve as the OC. Montana State assistant Bryan Applewhite has been hired as running backs coach. Toledo outside receivers coach Jason Nichols has been hired as wide receivers coach. #78 Leon Lett has been hired as defensive tackles coach. Everett Todd will just coach the defensive ends.

While I was looking for other receiving coaches, I was surprised to see how many teams had two receiving coaches. They either had outside and slot or inside and outside. Nichols has a good bit of experience. I don't see this move as great for him. I posted his bio on page 1 of this thread. I guess we wanted to be THE receiver coach.

If any one thinks colleges are recruiting wide receivers to then teach them to catch at that age and after getting to college, then they were lost before they started.

There is and should be a lot of coaching from high school to the college level. I would fully expect that we would have to spend time coaching WR's in college just like any other position - D1 college football is a long way from high school FB

Rattay is known for being an intelligent player. Lett is knowing for being a stupid player. I'd typically agree but these aren't equal comparisons.
-
Re: Football. Conroy Hines Resigns to Pursue Other Career Opportunities - latechsport
I am going to go ahead and say that I think it is really cool that ULM got Lett. Its a smart move on their part. The things people have brought up on this thread are probably the reason that he is going to ULM. They get a guy who brings a big name to the school and NFL experience. Most people who have been around long enough know Letts history and his major claim to fame. He was an excellent player and a very well known name and I would be willing to bet that even though a lot of people know about the play there are a lot more that would hear the name and think "I know he played for the Cowboys and thats about it" particularly in the younger generation.
I say good luck to him. Its a tough place to start.

i think that's a little over the top. lett is MOST remembered for a couple of unfortunate plays. but he's also a two-time pro bowler who overcame a lot of odds (juco player to naia to 7th round pick to overcoming some tough injuries to super bowl champion).
there's a major difference intellectually when it comes to coaching heady qb's and diagramming complicated offensive plays to teaching big uglies about technique in the trenches. big difference.

That wouldn't shock me. I could see him as a full time academic person for the athletic department, but if that were the move I'd have expected it to be announced with the other. I wonder if there is an opening at BARC?

I'd also imagine it's not unlike kickers who may have to be taught a new technique or an RB who has to be taught how to hold the ball when he runs.

First of all, that job is not open. Secondly, Spat is not interested in being the coach at Ruston High. Billy Laird does a good job with what he has.

Great idea.

A good job with what he has? The Bearcats had good talent and they got shut out by Richwood. It's time for a change at RHS.

They need a smart, young head football coach that can build a program like West Monroe and Conroy has the brain power to do it.
Comparing Ruston High to West Monroe is hilarious. They have twice the enrollment and no telling how many feeder schools. They should be good every year. Ruston is competitive every year, with not nearly as much talent as people claim. How many kids do you see going on to play college ball? I would also like to hear some examples of Daddy Ball.

ruston always has talent, some more years than others. there is a laundry list of players dating back to the '90s that have gone on to play college ball. heck, one year back in either '04 or '05, the two starting defensive ends were lazarius levingston and randy grigsby. levingston is starting at lsu, while grigsby gets plenty of playing time at tech.
the problem with ruston this year was that the 'cats didn't have a quarterback, and laird's system revolves around having a good quarterback. alsup and rome were both pretty good quarterbacks, and even better baseball players. colby was a good athlete, a great baseball player, but not a very good quarterback. i hope laird has one on the roster next year, or it could spell even more trouble.

I'm not sure what is going on now, but I know earlier this year he was interested and that comes from a reliable source.

Joey was the head coach at Jonesboro-Hodge and won two state championships before he went to Winnfield. This is his second time at J-HHS.

I heard he was a pretty good noseguard.

I was taught English by Joey's wife ...shudder...

Time to move on to a different title article. This titles article as named has lost its legs and gone every other direction. Need one for Rumored WR Coach in Recruiting section and put the HS stuff elsewhere.

Ruston would be lucky to get Spat. Cedar Creek should have held onto him while he was the strength and conditioning coach and the defensive coordinator. He led Cedar Creek to five straight state championships in powerlifting.
