Dykes talks football...
In the scrimmage yesterday, we ran eighty-something plays in forty-something minutes... very fast tempo designed to wear down the opponent.
Ensminger was named starter b/c: more upside, team seems to respond to him better, he needs some time adjusting to the responsibilities of being the guy (snaps, media, team chemistry)
How our talent compares to PAC-10: difference in terms of depth on off/def lines; qb is about the same; lb is about the same; rb is about the same; db is the same or better; wr is probably the most talented group he's ever coached.
We needed to sign a number of jucos in order to even out the class--he feels like we hit on all of those guys. the wr will probably be the most productive on the team
He is very impressed with the defensive line--as a unit they have stepped up. Every one of those guys is in a fight to keep a starting job--that includes established starters like Cole, Vic, and Carter.
Both McGill and Harmon will have a chance to play at the next level.

It was 82 in 45 - with no holding calls, 1 fumble and no false starts....(I think)
I still can't believe they wouldn't let me keep the framed schedule poster :icon_wink:

let me add:
Dykes said Ikaro (the JUCO WR) will probably be out best WR this year.

Yep, we have 2 years to kick WAC butt and draw some great attention. Just Win and the conference stuff will work out just fine.

I don't remember any conversation about boobs.

Re: Dykes talks football...
Others can back me up on this... Dykes is not the least bit insecure or defensive--he'll talk about anything. Said that he made a switch in starters at Arizona last year to a guy w/o experience, worked out well. This week and the next are our the 2 most important of camp b/c this is when the true leaders emerge.
He said what makes a great receiver is not the ability to make big plays but the discipline and effort to make the little plays.
-
Re: Dykes talks football...
I sure hope that Ensminger can get it done! It will be very nice to have WRs that can catch the ball. Back to the fun ol days... Rattay to Edwards...TOUCHDOWN BULLDOGS! YOU GOTTA LOVE IT! :)

Don't forget about, "No bad snaps. And that was 82 plays out of the shotgun!"
-
Re: Dykes talks football...
The better the receivers perform the better the qb looks (to a degree), in my opinion.

Re: Dykes talks football...
We'll only hold the ball 30 minutes or so in a game, so the 82 in 45 is not as impressive as it first sounds. It's good, not awesome.

Great practice tonight. Best one of camp. The weather was beautiful. We are starting to embrace the process of getting better.
SonnyDykes
Good scrimmage tonight. We competed hard and went over 80 plays. No significant injuries. We need another good practice tomorrow.

still though, that would mean around 70 a game. Isn't that several above the average? You can wear a defense down fast with a 12 play drive that only uses 3 minutes of clock time.

Yeah but that was 45 minutes in a scrimmage with really no stoppages. In a real game you have to take in account for incomplete passes, 1st downs, out of bounds, etc.
30 min game time > 45 min srimmage
-
Re: Dykes talks football...
Finally a thread about actual football. I can't wait for the season to start. Still waiting on my season tickets in the mail (getting a little nervous).
Sounds like the only positions that are questionable are QB and maybe our DL. Receivers, LB's, and our secondary sound like they should be really good. You guys that can make it to the practices are very lucky. I wish I could. Keep the practice updates coming, us out-of-towners really appreciate it.

Ok, I didn't know how they were counting the 45
