Gus malzahn to ???????????????
How far has this guy fallen???
Arkansas State?? Really???

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Does he have any HC experience? I guess big time programs are being more cautious with hiring greener coaches.

I think he was offered Vandy last year...........Auburn is about to nose dive.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
It's not that he has fallen, it is just that he really hated the situation that he was in at Auburn. With that being said, he is taking a pay cut to head to Arkansas State so it's huge steal for them. For what it's worth, I thought he was a lock for the KU job or that he was using Arkansas State as leverage for another position -- guess not! Enjoy beating up on ULM, Gus!
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
I think its an easier position than a Vandy or a Kansas to have a future, you can win at Ark St, they win the conference anyways, you have a good enough team already, just prove you can recruit and really be a HC and win.. easy wins, HC experience, and a free trip to a better AQ job 3 yrs down the road.

What does he (Malzahn) know about the Auburn situation that we don't?

I was in Auburn yesterday for work. Rumor around the cabbie circles there was some issues surfacing -- starting with Dyer transferring out...potentially to arky state, no less.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
This is a weird one. Seems like he could have had his pick.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
I wonder if this has anything to do with Michael Dyer's suspension? He may bring Dyer with him.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
With Dyer and Fredi Knighten, he could dominate the belt.

THIS! Very shrewd career move, imo....

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
You've got to wonder why a guy who just 2 years ago said he was happy being a coordinator, has changed his mind right after his top player has been dismissed from the team.

If I am not mistaken, he served as Co-Head Coach at Tulsa for a season with Todd Graham. I know that "co" doesn't technically count but, he could have manipulated it a bit on his resume'. :icon_wink:

I hope he doesn't get a bad reputation for not being able to work well with others. Arkansas and now Auburn.

It has become obvious that the ONLY reason Auburn won the NC was because somebody paid Newton. I would get out of there ASAP too.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Gus probably couldn't get a real head coaching job anymore because of his crazy wife.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Maybe he wants to start with a small school with promise and try to build it up. Arkansas State has been growing the last couple of years and getting a coach such as Gus could boost the teams recruiting capacity because he is well known in Arkansas as well as just about anywhere else and the fact that he is a respectable coach could help boost A-State to bigger things. I'm honestly expecting them to be getting into a better conference soon (especially since they can't really get into a worse conference).
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Folks, remember that he is also from AR so he would be moving back closer to family and he was HC at Hughes which is not that far from Jonesboro. But I too am shocked over this turn of events and never saw it coming.
And maybe ASU has decided to step it up and make a real commitment to athletics.

At $800K they certainly have.

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
They're already the best team in that conference so now they'll just continue to win 10 games and get into bowl games. They'll be a top 25 team every year if he stays there more than two years.

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
His wife appears to be very high maintenance - she won't allow him to stay in J'boro very long, that's for sure.

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Malzahn is beloved by high school coaches in Arkansas. It will be very difficult for us to sneak into Arkansas and get a kid passed over by the razorbacks now. I hope we hold onto Dixon. Getting a commit from Clark, the Ark OL that we have been recruiting, and/or Knighten is now very unlikely IMO.

Secret weapon #1 vs Malzahn is a clip of that interiew with Mrs. Malzahn.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
It will be hard, but I believe the recruiting will be about the same with it only slightly harder for us. worse case scenario is that recruiting in AR shuts dwn, but I believe this will open us to other states, plus Louisiana is a better recruiting area in my opinion.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Malzahn knows that w/o a Cam Newton his offense, just like ours, doesn't work consistently against higher levels of competition. I imagine that Malzahn's salary, like Franklin's, is strongly supplemented by selling his offensive system. Malzahn knows that his system looks best against the weakest opposition.
With that perspective, a move to Ark. St. makes perfect sense.

The video has been removed. Lol.
Here are some quotes: http://www.imagecpr.com/?p=10129
- On working with Auburn players. “It goes to a place of questioning his integrity and his character and his intelligence because a group of 18 to 22 year olds did not perform on the field like they should have. And if you’ve worked with 18 to 22 year old individuals, most of the time they’re not the most intelligent people that are out there anyway. We’re the nuts because we’re willing to base our whole entire lives on what they decide to do for the day.”
- On Auburn RB Michael Dyer: “He has a little bit of an attitude. He carries himself with a little confidence that we have to kick around every now and then. But he’s a great kid.”
- On former Auburn QB Cam Newton: “He is cute. Pretty boy. I love him, but don’t tell Gus.”
- On meeting with Lou Holtz: “We got to go to Lou’s house. Gus was way impressed. I kept saying, ‘He has a lisp or something. There’s something going on with his mouth. I can’t really understand what he’s saying. And Gus, was like, ‘Shut up!’”

In the past couple of years this would have been crazy to hear his name associated with the Ark State job - things change and those things are changing fast at Auburn. Gus is a Arkansas native and he is walking into a good situation in Jonesboro. He is also a Henderson State grad and was there at the same time my wife was and she still doesn't remember a thing about him!

If he's there 2-3 years and they schedule the right way, they will be top 25. That's a big IF though. I'm not saying they'll ever be higher than the 20's but I think it's realistic. He will be able to get the players to run his offense against a weak SBC schedule and rack up tons of points.

I can see it from any other conference, but the sun-belt says nothing about how good your team is unless your playing ranked times for every game out of conference. That's the only way I see it, but assuming he stays 3 or more years they shouldn't be in the Sun-Belt too much longer.

He will get hired away after next year when he wins at least 8 games. He should be able to run the table in the Sunbelt, beat Alcorn and Memphis, but these two will be tough...

-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Ouch! I didn't know they played those two. If he can keep the Oregon game from getting embarrassing, hang with Nebraska for the first half, beat Alcorn/Memphis, and run the SBC table it's still not probable.

If Oregon doesn't beat A-State by more than 30 points then A-State can look at it as a win. lol

May be. They already have a very nice football facility and their prez "gets it." They have had a jumbotron since even before the days Joakes was claiming we didn't need one. And, thanks to my connection in the athletic department up there, I get to sit in the President's or the Ad's endzone suite when I go up for ballgames. Very nice accomodations. Something that maybe one day we will be able to brag about having at the Joe. I think this is a good hire for the Red Wolves. They suffer from an even bigger problem with Ark than we do with lusbr but they have been making strides in the last few years.

DR is the problem. Nothing gets done because he does not allow it. But only the govenor has the authority to remove Reneau and he is below the govenor's radar.

He has no concept for how important athletics are. He speaks it, but doesn't show it. Stovall, Eagles mis-handling, Loyd, Bicknell, Oakes too long, now BVDV. One of his happiest days as a president was when the only person who ever stood up to him left on a jet for Knoxville.
Notice I didn't include Mulkey?

He is doing a great job from an academic standpoint. I sure wish he would leave athletics to the AD. Does he flat out tell the AD, "I don't want Tech to be any good in athletics." I can't imagine what his problem is with prospering in academics AND athletics. It can be done.

Dooley was the AD the day he was hired as the football coach. J.O. stayed on in name only. That's no big secret.
D.R. was under the gun to make some changes and show commitment to athletics. He threw some money at Dooley and had to turn loose of things while Dooley was here. No doubt that D.R. hated not having control. I say again, he was ELATED when Dooley left.

Women's basketball always lost money and would have continued to choke the progress of the men's team. Being known as a women's basketball powerhouse never brought the prestige that was hoped for much as no one cares that ULL is a powerhouse in women's softball. If we were currently a WB powerhouse, it would not be helping one iota regarding conference affiliation. In addition, Mulkey eventually would have left for more money anyway. Letting her move on gave us less to cheer for, but had no affect on Tech's long-term athletic future.

Not disputing WBB in the hierarchy of today's mega million dollar industry of college athletics, but I seriously doubt Kim would have gone anywhere if DR would have had the good sense to offer her one more year. Just another example of his ineptitude on the athletic side of his house. Then, when Leon got bored, he would have come back and helped her at La Tech instead of Baylor, and the rest would have been history. No, a continuation of history. Just a small piece of the puzzle that we wouldn't have to worry about today.
-
Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
I don't think she'd have passed up a 5x raise. Leon, yes. Kim, no.

I hate to prolong this conversation, but that is a dumb ass statement, or at least, uninformed. She had fifteen years on the payroll. DR offered her a 4 year contract. She wanted 5 because that would offer her the security of a 20 year retirement with the state. Everything after that would have been gravy. If she had only had 8 or 10 years, then you would be correct. It would have been no big deal. 2 years and an option. 3 years and free ice cream. Do I think she should have taken the 4 and then renegotiated - Yes. She could and would have spent 30 or 40 years doing what Leon had prepped her to do at our university. Baylor was not the first school to offer her the big bucks to jump ship. And if fact she turned them down at first. And yes, one year turned out to be a major deal. We have gone down hill since then. Leon had 8 asst coaches and 4 players who went on to become head coaches but he spent the most time with and put the most effort into developing his successor who was to be Kim Mulkey. One year made the difference.

This is correct. Don't get me wrong, I want us to be good in every sport but the way in which wbb was prioritized in the past HURT our athletics. Ironically, I think it even hurt wbb...

I think if and when the LSUS deal is done and operating, he will retire.

With all due respect to DR, I hope you're right.

He was asked how much longer in the State of the U address (or whatever they called it). I think he said 2-3 more years.

Re: Gus malzahn to ???????????????
Previously it was believed he would retire as soon as his house was completed. Then it was as soon as the LSUS merger was assured. Now it's 2-3 years. The fact is he exists as the supreme potentate, surrounded by yes-men, and answers to no one. He will not retire until his health fails. It is urgent that a private committee or other mechanism is established to work on Tech's behalf outside of DR's control.

Maybe his hemmoroids will start acting up and he'll call it quits.

Come on, man! Just when I think you've got your stuff together, you go and post something really dumb like this. I expect this type of nonsense from some of these neanderthals, but not you. If the mens BB program needs more money, GO GET IT! Stop with the stupid f&%$%@ excuses.
I've heard it all now. "The MAN" doesn't keep Tech's men's BB program down.....the LADY TECHSTERS do!!! Really? :icon_roll:

WTH? You're kidding right?
LA Tech needs to be good at EVERYTHING, guys. Some of you people are still living in the 1990's. You don't realize that women's basketball is a pretty big frickin deal now. The Big XII --and the other major conferences-- know this, and have continued to invest in women's basketball. Meanwhile, you guys go the other way. :icon_roll: Do you have a clue how backwards that is?
Baylor routinely sells 10K tickets to women's basketball games and appears on TV all the time. Some of the other Big XII schools are almost as successful. When they pack 7K to 11K in for a game, that's a lot of revenue, people. You guys just haven't fiigured it out yet. As usual, some LA Tech folks will be the last to know.

Jim Oakes stated publicly that we were the ONLY school in the country that spent more on wbb than mbb. That was stupid and he should have realized it.
WBB loses $ b/c people don't want to watch it on TV. I don't care how many ways the WNBA tries to redefine itself--nobody's interested. Apart from a select game or 2, the same can be said for college wbb...

HD, will you never learn not to pick a fight with a bigger dog? First, from where did you conjure a link between the Techsters and money for men's BB? I certainly didn't make that case. The Techsters were unprofitable, but they were no more of a drag on men's BB than every other unprofitable sport offered at Tech. The point was that even when playing at the highest level, women's BB could not pay for itself.
Regarding the Techsters and their effect on men's BB, it's indisputable that Tech fans were so enamored with being relevent on a national stage, in any sport, that any success by the men on a conference level was unfairly discounted. Combined with the limited overall athletic budget, and DR's failure to understand the economic dominance of men's BB over women's BB, the result was a disproportionate emphasis on women's BB. These factors unquestionably combined to slow the progress of men's BB at Tech.
Of course, we want to strive to be outstanding in everything we do, but to say that the Big XII and other conferences know that women's BB is a big frickin' deal and that is why they continue to invest in it is laughable. They invest in it because Title IX forces them to spend a lot of money in women's sports because they make a lot of money in men's football and BB. Since they must spend this money SOMEWHERE in women's sports, they spend it in women's BB because of all the women's sports it's the most spectator friendly.
