SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
This was in the front-page of the 1/26/12 edition of the Tech Talk. http://www.thetechtalk.org/?p=4347
Part of the article states:
The Student Government Association passed a resolution for an enhancement fee Jan. 17 that will fund a new athletic facility on campus.
The resolution will go to the Louisiana Board of Regents and, if approved, will go on the SGA spring election ballots for students to vote on. The proposed fee will renew the current fee of $20, along with an extra $30 that will go toward a new athletic facility for a total of $50.
The proposed athletic facility will be equipped with an auditorium, a place for formal banquets and meetings, and it will have a view of the jumbotron in Joe Aillet Stadium.
Jim King, vice president of student affairs, said this new fee will benefit everything from recreation, student life, athletics and ROTC to recruiting efforts.
In the hopes of appealing to potential students, getting rid of vacant dorms has been included in the proposal.
Re: SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
The 7th paragraph should have read:
"Tech President Dan Reneau, said Tech has risen academically over the past several years to become the most dominant institution in North Louisiana. He said that with the opportunities this new fee will bring, it would further cement Louisiana Tech as the flagship institution of North Louisiana."
Where would the new athletic facility be located? With the new swimming pools at the Lambright Center, could the Natatorium be renovated into the proposed facility? I know there were discussion in the SGA back in 2007 about turning the Natatorium into an location for student life offices and other organizations once the Lambright Center expansion was complete. The only other location for the facility I can think of are between the Lambright Center and student apartments on Tech Drive.
Re: SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
The article was not that clear or forthcoming about many details - IMO. The athletic facility components i.e. meeting rooms, auditorium referenced are part of the South Endzone Project - I think? It says it will have a view of the Jumbotron so the only place is as part of the endzone project.

I wouldn't think that the "proposed athletic facility" referenced in the article is the South Endzone Project in the Q4E, right?
The proposed fees would:- create the proposed athletic facility with an auditorium, place for formal banquets and meetings, and have a view of DawgZilla
- demolish Neilson and Caruthers Dorms and convert that area into a green recreational area
- create new parking spaces (accomplished by redoing the parking lots at Neilson and Caruthers?)
- create new student life and Greek offices (part of the new facility?)

The portion with a view of DawgZilla is the South Endzone Project.

Re: SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
Per the SGA President...
The new fee will cover demolishing several decommissioned dorms (Neilson & Caruthers), new intramural fields, additional parking, and a few other things. Part of the fee will be used to construct a state of the art banquet facility which will be a part of the new field house that is being constructed (South Endzone Project). He said more information, plans, drawings will be provided during informational sessions for the students in the next month.
Re: SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
I was thinking it was Neilson and Caruthers that would be the location since it said there would be a view of Dawgzilla and the destruction of unused dorms would be included. All that is needed to view the jumbotron is to elevate it above the RR tracks and the new South Endzone. This looks like a good thing but it is up to the students if they want this and the additional $30 (I assume they mean per quarter).

Then, DO IT!! I'm all for it. Please get rid of those eyesores called Neilson & Caruthers, and use part of the space to build more "University Park" type housing and green spaces.

I lived in Neilson the last year it was open; my feelings are the complete opposite. I can't wait to sit on the railroad track eating popcorn watching those buildings implode.
Re: SGA Proposes Fee for Athletic Facility
Sounds great! I wish I had a vote. Now we just need to get the natatorium turned into an indoor facility with an indoor track (similar to UH). We could bring in some money by hosting high school and college track meets every weekend during the winter and we'd have an indoor football/baseball/softball facility to showcase to recruits.

How confident are we this vote will pass? I hope SGA can sell it to the student body.

They wouldn't put it up for vote if they didn't think it would pass comfortably.
In 2007 "Change for Change" passed with 70% of the vote. My guess is this one will pass by a similar margin.
