HB 971: A bill restricting where LA athletic programs can travel...unless you're LSU

House Bill 971 was introduced yesterday by Rep. Stephen Carter. According to the abstract of the bill on the Legislature’s website, the bill would prohibit “athletic programs at public postsecondary institutions that receive state general fund monies from traveling more than 375 miles for athletic competitions.” The bill does provide exemptions for all football programs, basketball programs, and all LSU institutions.

In layman’s terms, House Bill 971 would require the Southern University System Board, the University of Louisiana System Board, and the Louisiana Community and Technical College Board to prohibit its institutions from traveling more than 375 miles from the institution to participate in athletic competitions. Exemptions are made for football and basketball programs, playoff/championship competitions, and any athletic competitions where the opposing team pays for travel and associated costs on behalf of the Louisiana school (i.e. money games or guaranteed games). The LSU System Board is not mentioned in the bill; therefore, LSU, LSU Shreveport, LSU Alexandria, and LSU Eunice would be exempt from the new rules in House Bill 971.

I am not going to play your game and look up all the stupid bills Democrats have authored. This topic is not about party politics. Quit trying to make it about party politics.

It's not about party politics. It's about a bad idea that reinforces the belief held by a lot of people (myself included) that LSU gets to play by one set of rules and the other colleges have to play by another.

A bad idea is a bad idea no matter which political party it comes from.

I still say stand with saying that this guy shouldn't be in office.

That would eliminate our baseball, softball, etc teams from playing CONFERENCE GAMES at any campus not within 375 miles!! How stupid is this jackass ?

It probably has a lot to do with the state being broke. The state of Louisiana's credit rating was downgraded again today. The state has spent more than it has taken in for 7 consecutive years. LSU is self funded for athletics, every other university is not. This is one way to cut spending...not on my list, but a way nonetheless.
