Source: Tennessee is closing in a deal with Purdue coach Jeff Brohm. UT interviewed Chad Morris of SMU last night but apparently UT favors Brohm.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
Gundy got PAID.
Tennessee needs to go the way of the "gimmick" offense given the level of HS football in their area.
-
Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
I think Brohm's missing out on really building something good if leaves Purdue for what I think is a very unstable TN job.
I guess I am closer because I have a co-worker who is a Purdue alum.

Maybe, but I thought the way he left was shady. I imagine opinion would be mixed if we were to go after Sonny again...and I think he left in a much more traditional manner than Graham (I believe he took the job a few days after he signed a big extension).

Working off the assumption that is likely, which we’re told it is, sources with knowledge of Tennessee’s plans tell FootballScoop the Vols intend to pivot to NC State head coach Dave Doeren. In five seasons at NC State, Doeren has posted a 31-29 regular season record (wins per year: 3, 7, 7, 6, 8).

I’m dead serious when I tell you guys this, yesterday Oregon State was thinking about Dennis Erickson (70) as HC, Smith as his OC…& now Smith gets the job

Let's see.... Tennessee went rescinding a MOU with Greg Schiano to being turned down from David Cutcliffe, Mike Gundy and Jeff Brohm. Now they want Dave Doeren. At least they are now focusing on a guy who wants out of his current job apparently, although other websites report he has been in negotiations at NC State this week. He is wanting an extension through 2023 with a raise and multi year contracts for his assistants with raises for them also. If Doeren turns UT down some successful high school coach in Knoxville is about to get rich.

I am told that UT AD John Currie made an offer to Jeff Brohm that Brohm accepted. Currie then asked the chancellor to approve the offer — buyout included — and chancellor said no. So Currie went back to Brohm with lesser offer and Brohm said no. So here we are.

That's unbelievable. What's unbelievable is the fact that Tennessee AD Currie wasn't on the same page with his chancellor. That's TWICE now. First with Greg Shiano, and now with Brohm, that Currie has gotten it wrong. UT might need a new AD.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
SI and ESPN are now reporting that Dave Doeren will stay at NC State. So Tennessee is back to the drawing board. Does anyone have the number for the assistant football coach at West Knoxville Junior High School for John Currie? Tennessee hiring football coaches, you cannot make this stuff up.

I don't know if you can win in the SEC with Miles' style of football if your prime recruiting grounds don't touch the gulf (plus Georgia). Gonna be tough to go toe to toe athletically with UGA and UF.

He has to state interest. His payout from LSU requires that he attempt to find employment coaching. If he isn't hired, they keep paying. He is interested in getting paid, not in coaching Tennessee.

Now Sumlin might go to Tennessee since he does not have a job and I think Texas A&M pays his contract in full regardless of his future employment. Every coach should be calling his agent. Tennessee had no business trying to hire most P5 head coach of quality.

Rough Tennessee HC search timeline so far...
11/12 - Butch Jones fired as Tennessee HC
11/26 - Greg Schiano accepts offer to be new HC at Tennessee; school pulls offer after tons of uproar from UT fan base
11/27 - Tennessee contacts David Cutcliffe (HC @ Duke); Cutcliffe wants to retire at Duke
11/28 - Tennessee contacts Mike Gundy (HC @ OK State); Gundy says he is #Cowboy4Life and stays at OK State
11/29 - Tennessee contacts Chad Morris (HC @ SMU) and interviews him; no offer so far
11/29 - Tennessee contacts Jeff Brohm (HC @ Purdue); Brohm eventually says no to the offer
11/30 - Tennessee contacts Dave Doeren (HC @ NC State); Doeren rejects offer from Tennessee after he and NC State agree to new 5-year deal
11/30 - Les Miles is very interested in Tennessee HC job. No contact from Tennessee.
11/30 - Tennessee may be interested in ex-Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin and Jimbo Fisher (Florida State HC)
-
Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel

Blast from the past...A recap of the 2010 HC search at Tennessee in which Derek Dooley (17-20 at LA Tech over three years) became HC at Tennessee after Will Muschamp (Texas DC), Troy Calhoun (Air Force HC), David Cutcliffe (Duke HC), Kyle Whittingham (Utah HC), Al Golden (Temple HC), and Kevin Sumlin (Houston HC) were interviewed/turned down the offer.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
It seems like Tennessee would be one of the premier jobs in the country, so I can't imagine what is going on. Looking at their recruits, they appear to compare favorably to everyone in the SEC except Alabama.
Hard to believe they can't even get a recently-fired coach interested.

They went through many candidates in 2010 for sure, but those coaches had jobs nowhere near the caliber of the current candidates. Only 2 of the previous candidates have jobs that are now considered Power 5 schools. This time they have only offered Power 5 head coaches, after offering Schiano, who was a former NFL head coach and took Rutgers from being a bottom feeder to being ranked as high as 3rd and a post bowl ranking of 12th.

Orgeron loses 3 games again next year fans will be calling for his head. If he loses 4 games I believe he will get fired.

Pulling for ulm to win is a very rare, but pulling for FSU to win is hoping the odds decrease for EllAye Tech's bowling.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
Cant blame the players, Im sure they want a coach that is committed not shopping for another gig. Of course, Jimbo may see the handwriting on the wall and is bailing while he has leverage. Anther sub par year and his value declines.

This year if Canada leaves
LSU caught some unbelievable breaks with the turmoil at Florida, Tennessee and A&M and Malzan pulling a WTF the 2nd half of the Auburn game
I think 36 months is his term at LSU and they will be in the market again by 2019

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
"Texas A&M officials have approved a 10-year, $75 million contract for Jimbo Fisher, which is the richest deal in college football history in terms of total value, sources told ESPN. He'll be the second highest paid coach in the FBS with an average salary of $7.5 million. Alabama's Nick Saban agreed to an eight-year contract extension in May that will play him $65 million over the life of the deal. Saban will make an average of $8.1 million."

Yeah they aren't going to buy Miles out for 9 mil...Sign O to a new contract and then buy him out for 12mil a year later. I'm not making predictions on what they're going to do a year or more from now. They aren't firing him this year.

Saban averages more per year, but Jimbo's deal is the largest overall deal in NCAA history. Nobody gives a ten year contract. Saban's last deal was 8 years, $65 million. Both make a fortune, that's for sure.

Who's to say the bigger schools don't try to contact him (or his agent) about a new job? It could be that Patterson told his agent that he is not interested in going anywhere until he says otherwise and to let any potential suitor schools know that. If all other schools know Patterson is off the market, after a while, they'd stop calling. Who knows the real reason, but this seems likely to me.

With the early signing period, waiting until January to save $500,000 is no go. They need to already have a coach lined up now or they lose a recruiting class. I feel so sorry for them.

His name used to come up all the time. Especially in the pre-Big 12 years when everyone just assumed you could always hire away from a non-AQ at will.
I think they've paid him enough and he's shown enough commitment to TCU that other schools have given up.

Yes, he is making good money now and I think that is a part of it. I also think it has to do with his age and possibly his reputation. Did you see how stressed he looked on the sidelines? He was sweating bullets.

Surprising is that Kiffen is still at FAU.
Is the reputation that bad that he needs another year of rehab before he gets a look?

The dominoes are still falling, but I expected him to be top 5 pick. Maybe top 10?

Yes his reputation is that bad
He is an absolutely wretched human being with very little in redeemable social value
University Presidents have a HARD time signing off on him - that's why he ends up at FAU and not Houston

Not that Familiar with him, but from what I have seen and read you seem to be spot on DFM, I think his personality can become instantly abrasive as soon as he opens his mouth or trolls social media. He just has a knack for pi$$ing people off while expending very little effort to do so.
This guy has no filter and he could probably make lot's of booster money disappear from your program with just one sentence or two.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
Kiffin in Oregon is a match made in heaven. Phil Knight plus a loud-mouth social media addict...lots of money to be made by everybody. That's not how Oregon has hired in the past, but he could excel there.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
It appears to be Kurt Roper to coach at Rice.

Re: 2017 Coaching Carousel
That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Kiffin should have Coach Roid as a guest.
