Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
So we're on a 3 year plan now?
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Will state government shut down like it did for some tiger?

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
If we knew we were going to retire him, why didn't we have a plan to do it during the summer so a replacement could seamless slide in for all the sports appearances?

That would require forethought from within.

Do we have to go through the year long application process with the government for a new dog?

Just more of the same massive and liberal democrat government regulations. And they call themselves "progressive". :icon_roll:

So, we've known this was the plan for THREE YEARS. And yet, for some reason, we've WAITED until basketball season, essentially (which is a very high contact with the crowds). We won't even begin the process until the end of the FALL quarter. So we're looking at at least several months, probably a YEAR without a mascot.
All this on a schedule that we've known about.
Or is there something simple I'm missing?
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Hell, even vets can't always take care of dogs. Maybe if we got an Aggie vet instead of an LSU vet he would know more about dogs than tigers.

It sure seems like this retirement was planned in advance, with some kind of best-practices information about mascots. Given that we knew it was coming, surely we have a plan for a replacement ready to go, right? Everything filed, puppy due any minute, all that?

He retired with two home football games left including Homecoming? I'm sure they have more pressing things to deal with at Tech but this is just an example of the tone deafness the powers to be at Tech exhibit at times with regards to maybe what some consider "little things" to fans and supporters. I wonder if Champ is on the same program???

I hear ya, Dawg-brother, but after Dos Equis passed (and the circumstances around his death) I suspect this was more of honoring a potentially legal mandate. Just speculating, of course.

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Who knows, he may have a health issue that needs tending to that the public isn't aware of. I hope that's not the case and that this has just been mismanaged by those in charge. Either way, I appreciate XXI for his service and loyalty. Seriously, he's such a good dog. Friendly as hell and a little goofy. Perfect Bulldog.

I can't believe any government agency is involved in the business and approval of mascots. What has this country come to? :icon_roll:

That's what this sounds like to me. Another cover up.
If what the press release says is true, it confirms that Tech runs the worst live mascot program in the United States. How incompetent do you have to be to issue a press release out of the blue saying that you retired your mascot 10 days before due to a length-of-service protocol you developed 3 years ago after going a year without a live mascot due supposedly trying to figure out how to properly run a live mascot program and won't begin discussions for a replacement mascot until the end of Fall quarter? :rolleyes4:
We have such a great tradition with our live mascot, but our university doesn't have a clue how to respect it. Truly sad.

The article said this: "At the recommendation of veterinarians and guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture, Tech XXI’s retirement follows Louisiana Tech’s length-of-service protocol for the live bulldog mascot, developed prior to Tech XXI’s selection in 2013."
To me, this doesn't say the length-of-service protocol specifies a definitive timeline and that administrators just woke up to realize the 3-year period was ending, but that the protocol includes evaluation of circumstances that may call for the end of the mascot's length-of-service, such as an unforeseen health concern.

Is there some kind of conspiracy to conceal Tech XXI's health status? Hell, the nation has been losing their shit over Mike VI. If he's sick, let us know, it's not that big of a deal, not that big of a secret. Why hide something like that?
Seems more likely that we forgot.

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
I've heard he needs facial reconstruction surgery. Could be why the decided to retire him after evaluation. Wish they would have said something along those lines when they issued the retirement announcement though.

No idea about Tech XXI's health status. I read a lot more into it than it seems others did. I thought "at the recommendation of veterinarians" implied there is a health concern and that, retirement was recommended, in accordance with the l-o-s protocol.
So, if people believe this was overlooked or there was dereliction of duty, is the assumption that the protocol calls for a new live mascot every three years? Surely not.

Agree--the press release could have been clearer. I'm just not seeing a "conspiracy" or "cover up" as has been suggested.

I'm not seeing one either. I'm saying a cover-up seems unlikely, so why the lack of information? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm telling y'all, it's Dog HIPPA.
Cats aren't subject, so that's why it was legal for LSU to give all the details about their mascot's health issues.

Our Tank was a rescue (sorta). We purchased him 2 years old from a lady who's son had young kids and couldn't take care of him.
He lived about 7 1/2 years. We had the pleasure of owning him for about 6 of those years.
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Had a full size terrier mix mutt about 50 labs I rescued. She lived 17 years. Had heart worms twice when younger (those daily filarabits were not terribly effective) and a bladder stone removed when she was 11. I have collies now. My first two died at 13 and 14 years.
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Labs are the best but they shed horribly and we let them in the house some (a lot). We want a labradoodle or goldendoodle, but apparently the lack of shedding and great temperament is very desirable and they are a high dollar dogs! I tried to find a female standard poodle as breeding stock, but they are expensive and I'm apparently not the first one to think of that. I could make some major points with one of those "doodle" varieties.
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
Our bully has not been inexpensive and she recently had to have facial surgery on her eyelashes and to remove a skin fold above her nose to relieve pressure off of her eyes and help her breathe easier. My wife and I would not have any other kind of dog. They are awesome.

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
We should consider this as our new mascot:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_i9u1_OaCZM...20a71c93_z.jpg
A Komodo Dragon (Monitor Lizard).
Why? Hell! just because they are ugly and bad-ass, like our Dawgs!!
No, don't change our nickname from "Bulldogs", just trot one these suckers out on a leash, with a "Meet our mascot." Hah!
Warning: make sure our handlers are in full body armor at all times. These Dragons don't respect anything or anyone and are likely to attack the handlers without warning.
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
We should look into Olde English Bulldogges as mascots. Much lower risk for health issues, but still similar in appearance to the standard English Bulldog.

Before the game just "introduce" our dragon to the refs, and say: ya know, I get upset over bad calls by you refs, and when I do, I tend to lose a tight grip on Champ's leash. Oh, by the way, our Champ here (the dragon) just loves zebra meat. He's kind of near-sighted so, ya know, mistakes happen... you guys have a great game tonite!

Not sure this is in our AD's job description.

What wasted resources? The live mascot program is (or at least used to be) funded and run by the SGA.
Fans, especially children, love the live bulldog.
And the live mascot program is one of the best traditions we have dating back to 1930. It's a shame the university hasn't respected the tradition.

Because our University has done a very poor job in honoring the tradition.
Georgia and Butler have received a lot of great pub with their live bulldog mascots, and our tradition goes back much further than both of those mascot programs. Yale too, but they were first. I don't recall any bad pub coming out of Mississippi State, Fresno State, Georgetown, Citadel, James Madison, Western Illinois, Gardner-Webb, or Bryant about their live bulldog mascot programs either.
We are talking about Louisiana Tech, the school that orders our mascot costume out of a catalog so that South Carolina State, Minnesota-Duluth, and other schools across the country have mascots that wear the same costume as Champ.

Tech should seek a rescue bulldog. Find one that has been abandoned, or is in a shelter. Then adopt it.
My wife and I help with such matters thru the Natch. Humane Society, and also a separate organization, Hope for Paws. Be glad to see what's available.

That seems to be the problem with the breed. Not like Labs and most other pure breeds, they seem to be too well bred (like the Washington establishment not as many forks in the tree :icon_razz:) I know there are many Bulldawg fans who own the preferred breed and disagree about the "issues". They need to take up the cause.

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
As stated in the past on this board, maybe it's time to look at other types of bulldog breeds like the "American" bulldog. They look strong and athletic. We could do a rebranding of our costume mascot and bulldog logo.

You can go back a few years and find the thread where we discussed this before when Champ had to be replaced. I strongly advocated looking into rescue, especially since we were following up the heat stroke tragedy, I was frowned upon heavily on here for suggesting it.
Should Tech really want to make a statement that will make for good news and publicity that can do nothing but help us, look into rescue and adoption. As for all who think that it is a must for us to do "proper vetting" in order to find a bulldog with the right genetics so as not to be prone to many of the inherent health problems they have, think some more. This breed is a wonderfully love-able breed, but there is never a guarantee, no matter how much vetting you do, that those health problems will be avoided. You can reduce your chances, but not guarantee with any kind of certainty of no health problems. You can take a perfect set of parents and have a recessive gene show up in their litter, it just happens.
Many of you on here own or know of the breed first hand, those of you who own did your best to get a pup with the best genetics so you would not have to worry, but you still worry because that chance of a defect is always there.
Does Tech have a replacement waiting to step up immediately? Should they not, why not look into the rescue route, it could be very rewarding for all.
-

Not necessarily advocating what these folks are stating in their petition, but this is not the first time this has been brought up. Give it some thought.

The problem is with the University, not the bulldog. In my post above I listed 11 over DI universities who run live English bulldog mascot programs without many of the issues we are having.

Our brand is the English bulldog, and I wouldn't want an American bulldog anyway near kids. And that still wouldn't solve the problem of the University not properly running a live mascot program.

Lovely dog there. But I don't think I'd want us to change dog breeds. Just for the sake of consistency.

Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
The last one lasted only a little over 3 years until they retired him. Did we get him as a grown dog or as a puppy? If we got him as a puppy, would a rescue even last that long? Did he have a health complication or is this just a decision for the dog to not be overstressed by games and activities?

We got him as a puppy.
The reason for his retirement was never made public. All we got was a vague facebook message posted on the University's facebook account last Fall. Not a word since except for Guice's strange "woof" response yesterday.
IIRC a rescue dog was discussed last time, but it was deemed too risky.

Olde English Bulldog!
A little taller but similar look to current bulldogs, basically looks like a bulldog with a little bit of boxer.
http://www.ucadogs.com/images/young_vito.jpg
Issue is variability since they aren't an established/"Official" breed.
-
Re: Tech XXI retires from active service as live mascot
At this point the breed is irrelevant because we dont have any dog at all.

Issue is variability since they aren't an established/"Official" breed.
Olde English Bulldog is definitely the way to go!
They are recognized by the UKC and there is also the IOEBA, which is the "standard" registry for the breed.

From the picture above it looks like an American Bulldog.

Looks kinda like a mix of the Old English and American Bulldog.

Lets get us a young buck English and cute little American miss and start our own breed.

Kind of agree with CHC, maybe start our own breed.
As you can see from the above post there are no guarantees, Rescues are risky, "properly vetted" dogs are risky, what is not risky about the breed we have chosen? Just start picking up a rescue every other year and cutting the odds that you will lose a dog during his tenure, have one always waiting on standby. We have backup QB's, why not backup Bulldogs.

Why is this such a big problem for LA Tech? And why is it so difficult to find and keep a good Bulldog? This is supposed to be the easy stuff.
I don't recall Tech having these kind of "Bulldog" issues in previous decades. So why the train wreck now? This is reminiscent of the bowl invite fiasco back in 2012.......you KNOW something is not right when this kind of crap only happens to LA Tech.

Bingo. The problem is not the breed. The problem is with Tech.

Remind me why it is assumed there is a problem? Is it simply because the status is unknown to us?

We've not had a live mascot for how long now? That's a problem in itself. It's an even bigger problem because the administration keeps tight lips on everything to avoid egg on their face.

Since October. It isn't a problem, unless you want it to be a problem. As far as I know we don't know why they retired the last one, right? Why would they plan to announce a mascot's retirement in October? Under normal circumstances, would it not make sense to do that at the end of the year? It feels unplanned.

Hadnt thought about this in a while. Hopefully there's a mascot by the beginning on football season.

Here is my little French Bulldog puppy. We could always honor our French Louisiana roots and I could just bring him to the games.
