Who is starting at QB for the Bulldogs in our first conference game of 2022?
Right now that's UTEP on 10/01, but there is a good chance there is a bit of a shuffle in the ole CUSA schedule so I didn't want to be that specific.
I think sometimes coaches look at early OOC games (especially where we'd be big underdogs @ an SEC school and @Clemson) differently when they think about who to play, so I also wanted to push this in to conference play.
We've basically got three old guys and three young guys (classes are all messed up so you almost can't use them anymore, but basically 3 guys at the end of their eligibility and 3 towards the beginning).

Still only 2 on LaTechSports.com, but that should be updated when the Spring Quarter starts on 3/8. I think all will be here for Spring practice, so it will be fun.
If Anthony is 100%, he'd be my number 1 choice. He has the most D1 experience and was excellent until his injury in 2020.
#2 - Parker McNeil - put up big JUCO numbers, but doesn't have the D1 experience
#3 - Matt Downing - not a lot of college PT, but still a vet.
#4 - Caleb Holstein
#5 - Lyddy / needs to redshirt
#6 - Brister / maybe he can play like his dad

I'm almost certain it will be one of the old guy transfers starting in game one. I could see a younger guy making a case by conference, but I wouldn't put my money on it at this point.
I don't know if I'd call Anthony's 2020 "excellent" but it is the most FBS experience of anyone on the roster. I had thought McNeil would have the edge since he's played for both Cumbie and Parr, but that may be a wash vs. Anthony's overall experience (and it's impossible to know if Downing is an Austin Kendall type who just got stuck behind really really good players or if he's a "camp arm" as DFM said).
I'll say this, it'll be an interesting race. I hope you guys that are local will keep us all posted on how it looks from the stands.

Downing must have some El Dorado ties we didn't know about. If arkansasbob votes for him, the theory will be confirmed.

Luke Anthony has experience, but that’s about it. My bet is on one of the other two (McNeil or Downing)
Re: Who is starting at QB for the Bulldogs in our first conference game of 2022?
I voted Luke, just because of experience. However, he will not have a leg up in chemistry or understanding scheme. They guys who followed coach may be at an advantage with scheme.

don't think i know any downings...
i abstained from the poll because i don't think we'll start a qb for our first conference game. by the first of october, we will have tried each of the qbs in several situations and found them wanting. for the first conference game we will roll out a full-time wildcat offense. we'll only throw the ball once or twice a game as a trick play.

Got USM a couple of wins last season. Unfortunately for us

Calling Luke Anthony "excellent" at QB is laughable. Please. He peaked against FCS Houston Baptist Univ in our 2nd game of the season. His stats went straight down hill after that. He got worse in almost every subsequent game. He was so bad against UAB he had to be replaced. Take away the FCS HBU game, and Anthony averaged a whopping 145 yds per game passing. That's pathetic for Div 1A football.

At least we should find out quickly if it was the players or the coach.
Re: Who is starting at QB for the Bulldogs in our first conference game of 2022?
I trust coach Sonny with anything he decides until proved otherwise. I’m all in!

He looked pretty good to me. I wish we had him if he makes a 100% recovery.
Re: Who is starting at QB for the Bulldogs in our first conference game of 2022?
Even if Luke is 100% recovered, I worry about his mental toughness after experiencing such a bad injury. Will he have the confidence of the o-line?
