Group Files Legal Action Over Planned Removal of "Confederate" Name
(Nashville, TN) -- The United Daughters of the Confederacy is suing Vanderbilt University, over the school's plans to drop "Confederate" from the name of a dormitory called "Confederate Memorial Hall." The service group helped pay for the building. A lawyer for the group referred to his clients as "steel magnolias who won't be pushed around." The organization is made up of women who are descendants of those who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. They filed suit threatening to seek an injunction to stop the action. Vanderbilt officials said they had decided to drop the word from the name because it was an unpleasant reminder of slavery and the war between the states.
