Begin season 3rd week of March
Tourney begins in early July
Mid-July CWS
Quote:
Michigan coach Erik Bakich said, “This is about the sustainability and growth of college baseball for the 2022 season and beyond."
“Regardless of geography, playing college baseball in February and early March does not make sense financially, academically and certainly not medically speaking,” he continued. “If college baseball realistically wants to increase scholarships or add another full-time coach at some point in the future, improving our fiscal bottom line is the next step. If we do nothing, we may not like the decisions that will be made for us.”
I think this would be good for college baseball and towns. The first 2 months are currently overshadowed by Basketball and it's sometimes frigid. You get and extra month (June) of fans coming to town to watch games and spend $.
The one downside would be Collegiate Summer Leagues might take a hit, but you could possibly shift those a few weeks. Many don't start until early July anyways. Some leagues might have to shorten their season (Cape Cod league goes from early June to early August).
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
I hope starting the season in mid-March happens. Looks like a lot more advantages than problems. I know I'll be able to go to a lot more games.
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
Good move for college baseball.
Also, a good more for college basketball in the south.

I'm not so sure. What would it do to the Belt, Southland, and CUSA if there are 12 to 15 more competitive programs in the north?
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
I expect starting baseball in mid to late March will grow the game in the north but doubt it will hurt conferences in the south. I doubt it has much effect on basketball beyond maybe improving attendance a little. College baseball needs to grow and IMO making it a stronger national sport can only be a positive outcome.
For Tech it really ought to improve our baseball program's financial situation with an outside chance it could become our only profitable athletic program.
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
A long over due correction. I agree with tenacious it will help grow the game in the north with no harm to the southern conferences. Overall great for college baseball in the long run.

Tech baseball profitable? I need some help with this one. LSU's baseball program MIGHT turn a profit...I suppose it's possible, but I doubt very many others do.
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
Like I said, outside chance, unlikely. Like deep into post season, going to Omaha kind of outside chance. But with a still new ballpark and increased interest in the program, we'll end up in a much better position financially if the season starts in mid to late March.
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
Mid-March is better for the northern teams, but it's not like Winter is over up there.
Re: D1 Baseball Changes Proposed
We might not become profitable, but it could help the bottom line - less of a negative. I’m pretty sure LSU baseball is already profitable.

Hopefully it will make the sport of college baseball bigger as a whole, increasing revenues throughout the sport. Some of that might trickle to us.
On a unrelated note, I know I sure missed watching the tourney in Biloxi this year.

Can't really start later than that. ESPN won't have the CWS running into the start of football season.

I understand. I was speaking to those thinking that the move was going to spark baseball in the north. IMO, there are many good things that come from this, but teams in Nebraska and Iowa won't gain much from a weather standpoint.
