Looks like they are starting to make their pitch to the PAC12...
The funniest part about that whole thing is the amount of people in the stands in the artist rendering.
$800 million for a stadium in which to watch UNLV play football?
I don't think that will happen. 800 million for UNLV football ??? Just a proposal !!!
I will believe this when someone signs the contract to build the stadium. In the 11 years I have lived here, there have been roughly 15 proposals for new stadiums and they have all fallen through for one reason or another. They usually come up with things like this 100-yard video screen in an attempt to get public support for the project. UNLV does need a new stadium and if they put it in the right location they could attract better crowds, but I have heard this story before.
If it happens, this would help out a lot with their push for the Pac-12. They have talked about that forever, and last year the Board of Regents approved a proposal that would allow UNLV to have an "on campus" stadium, but there are a lot of hurdles to cross before they can actually implement that plan. In the proposed location, there are already a few athletic facilities, so they would have to relocate those, as well as purchase some neighboring land from Clark County. But, here's the kicker: Last summer's proposal to the legislature said that the stadium would cost between $450 and $500 Million, and they wanted it to be paid for with a "tax increment finance district" that they are planning to ask for in the 2013 state legislative session. A similar proposal failed in 2011.
So, they don't have the land they need, they don't have the money to pay for the project, and they still have a lot of politics to take care of. And, the proposed amount has increased by $300 million. All they have right now is a drawing and an approval from the Board of Regents to build a stadium if they can cross all of the other hurdles. That being said, if they can pull it off, it would be pretty cool. When Utah got invited to the Pac-12, I think it opened a lot of eyes. People here have known for a long time that they need a new stadium, and that made them realize that if they don't upgrade facilities, they could be left out in the cold. They also need to renovate the Thomas and Mack, but that will require more red tape.
I really hope this happens, but I am not buying it yet.
Vegas would be perfect for a Superbowl
Jerry Jones will already be eating his heart out when the Texans have a bigger screen next season.
You're right, but that just won't happen. The NFL and their lawyers, absolutely HATE this town.
Honestly, UNLV football is the least important part of this deal. There are a lot of events that would come to LV if they just had a place to hold a major event. Just a few months ago, there was an MLS soccer game here at Sam Boyd Stadium (current UNLV football stadium) which is about a 25-30 minute drive from the strip. If you put this stadium 5 minutes from the strip, there is the possibility of getting an MLS team here. There has been talk for years that several MLB teams have expressed an interest in moving here, but there is no stadium. If this place were built, you would have an enclosed stadium for summer games.
I am not a big gambler, but I do like to bet on games every now and then. I think it would be pretty cool to place a bet on a baseball game, then drive over to the stadium and cheer for the team I bet on. It would be similar to going to a horse race and cheering for your horse to come in.
The potential revenue that could be generated with a place like this might help it pass through the legislature. The 2011 measure was shot down but the economy has picked up a little and this would be a good shot in the arm for the city. Bringing a lot of new events to town also benefits the casinos and every other tourist-based business in town. It might have better support this time, but you never know what politicians will do. Some will argue that the money could be better spent saving some obscure species of butterfly in the Sierra Nevadas, and we will have to listen to that garbage for a few months.
As I said in my last post, I hope this passes, but I will not believe it until something really starts happening.
And its taking an act of God to get the ball moving a 20 million dollar renovation of JAS?????
