New rules? 4 quarters, etc
Hi gang, I wasn't aware of new rules changes until today. Gonna be weird getting used to it. Four ten minute quarters; advance the ball to mid-court in last minute; 2 free throws on the fifth foul each quarter.

Sounds too much like the NBA to me. Any thoughts?
Re: New rules? 4 quarters, etc
The biggest change will be the 4 ten minute quarters. That will shorten the game by quiet a bit. The defender in the post is going to get some more latitude without being called for a foul, as well.
Still not sure why the ten minute quarters.....
Re: New rules? 4 quarters, etc
At least basketball gets four quarters. Hockey fans only gets three. :dunce:
I wonder... are they thinking less time = less chance for injury? It does give the coaches more time with the players (if timeouts haven't been cut). [edit: Oh yeah, it insures another commercial break. Gotta pay the piper.]
Evolution of the game: offensive players have been granted amnesty to initiate way too much contact, knowing the defensive player will get the foul. If that rule change corrects that, it sounds good to me.

Question..........How does 4 quarters shorten the game vs. the current setup of 2 halves? Not mocking, I really don't understand.

Actually, the defender is getting less latitude in the post. In the past, you could have two points of contact on an offensive post player (a forearm, an open hand, a knee) without displacement. That's now one point of contact (a non-extended forearm or hand). Two hands or a hand and a forearm is now a foul. And when she turns and faces the basket, the offensive post player becomes just like a perimeter ball-handler. The only contact allowed is one hot stove touch with a hand. Everything else is a foul.
I get the theory behind the four quarters instead of two halves. It's supposed to double the last-second shot opportunities, which should create more exciting. You have four of those now, instead of just two. And I actually like getting rid of the 1-and-1 because it cuts down on opportunities for unnecessary pushing and shoving while fighting for a rebound on the lane line.
The one change I don't like is the advancement with a timeout. I don't like it in the NBA, and I don't like it in college. To me, it's just a gimmick that you can essentially buy advancement of the ball with a timeout. That would be like in football, you could advance 25 yards and get a first down just for calling a timeout. Don't like it. But at least there are only four timeouts now, and only three of those can carry over to the fourth quarter. So maybe we won't see it used that often.

Thanks! That does help clarify it for me.

You are correct. I became confused, which happens easily on Monday afternoons. :D This is likely to just add more opportunities for commercials, as Bruised Orange stated.

Completely agree with ya. That fundamentally changes the game and is gimmicky. But my biggest question: Is this enough change to bring maddawg back into the WBB fold?:D
Re: New rules? 4 quarters, etc
Hmm, going back to the tried and true? Back in my hs days we had 4 quarters for girls' games. Took me almost 45 years to get used to the change. Now i have to get used to it again.

Advantage... Kennedy Rushin?
JMHO, but I think the offensive player should also be limited to one point of contact without displacement--and each cheek should count separately! I don't think the defender should have to yield ground to a buttdozer, especially in the women's game where there's such disparity in body type.

In the old setup, there were eight media timeouts -- at the 16-, 12-, 8- and 4-minute marks of each half. That's now six. There will be a media timeout at the first dead ball under 5 minutes of each quarter, unless there is a timeout called before that time. Any timeout prior to the 5-minute mark will replace the media timeout. So say a team gets off to a hot start, taking a 12-0 lead in the first two minutes. The losing coach takes a timeout to stop momentum. That's the media timeout at the 8-minute mark, and we won't have another one the rest of the quarter. The end of the first and third quarters will also serve as a media timeout. So, essentially, we're going from eight media TOs to six, and each team is losing a timeout. In theory, the games should go more quickly. Instead of playing a game in 10 4-minute segments, now it should be played in 8 5-minute segments.

We'll see how it's actually called. By rule, the offensive player has no more right to displace a defender than a defender has to displace an offensive player. Backing down a defensive player who is not giving ground should be an offensive foul. Like I said, though, we'll see how it's actually called.
