Coach Controversy Near End?
February 28, 2005 — It appears the ongoing Stacy Johnson-Klein matter could be wrapped up in the next couple days, when the coach will either be reinstated or fired from her job.
The review conducted by the legal team for the California State University chancellor has focused on two major issues — improperly obtaining prescription pain medication and whether Johnson-Klein defrauded or embezzled thousands of dollars from the athletic department.
Several sources have told Action News that the university became alarmed when it was notified by an area doctor who felt the coach had a problem with vicoden, that she had been cut off by her doctor, and wanted other doctors alerted she may come to them to get more.
It was then learned she was accused of seeking pain pills from players, trainers and athletic department employees.
The coach's lawyer says she only took one pill, one time from a player.
The other major area being probed involves allegations of inappropriate handling of finances at Fresno State.
Among the incidents reviewed are accusations she used university money to travel to events that never took place, such as a July recruiting trip to scout players at events in Australia and China. Athletic department administrators were later told of accusations there was no tournament in China.
Action News has previously reported Johnson-Klein is accused of falsifying expense accounts. It has since been learned among the items reviewed was a single team-meal bill totalling $700.
The only documentation Action News can find of any past financial problems for the coach is a 1997 bankruptcy in Oklahoma.
Stacy Johnson-Klein or her lawyer would not comment on these new more detailed accusations.
The university also won't comment, and it is not known whether the investigation has confirmed any of these allegations. While the outcome of the review is not known, multiple campus sources say the matter should be concluded no later than Tuesday.
Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
I would bet money that it won't be concluded by Tuesday. Of course, they may be trying to get it all taken care of before the NCAA Regional in Fresno.

If not, she could always find employment at the Mount Moriah Ballet.
I think MEMDAWG has connections, or maybe EASYDAWG.

Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
They have settled out of court with another female and had another case actually go to court and lost. Fresno is having troubles, but really when are they not??
Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
They have had a lot of Title IX issues. That was why the volleyball coach sued and won against them, and also why they got a whole new softball stadium.
Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
I somehow missed previously that she was once an assistant in Ruston.
Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
This is why Fresno will not get into the MWC, and won't event sniff the Pac-10. They tried to blame all of their NCAA problems on Tarkanian when he left, but it runs much deeper than that. Title IX is a problem, but they also have a substantial history of infractions. Problems like this will plague Fresno for a while, and even if the next conference "shake-up" doesn't happen for a few more years (maybe 2010), they will be shunned by everyone. I can't imagine any scenario where they would get into the MWC right now unless a couple of MWC teams got the death penalty.
The last president at UNLV openly campaigned for Nevada to get into the MWC (it's nice when states understand the benefits of more than one program doing well) and Boise is another candidate they will consider. Houston is someone else who will get a look, but Fresno is likely out.
I'm not sure what their future holds, but I believe they will be stuck in the WAC for the forseeable future.
Re: Stacy Johnson Klein Placed on Administrative Leave
I wonder if SJK needs a shoulder to cry on (maybe even more).:D
I'm sure my wife wouldn't mind, I mean she is a fellow Techite.
