He graduated from Delta State, spent four years as an assistant there, and then spent seven years as the head coach at Jones County Junior College. So he spent at least 15 years in Mississippi prior to coming to Tech. His wife is also from Mississippi.

Re: USM baseball expected to hire Ostrander
With USM's success, I wouldn't be surprised if maybe he sees a path to being a head coach there.

His bio also says he's from Monroe, Louisiana.

I've noticed that before. I think he was just born in Monroe. I've never met anybody who grew up with him around here.

I saw that, but I also read a story when he was leaving Delta State that quoted him as saying he was from Dallas.

I was surprised that Berry hired Ostrander given his close friendship with Burroughs. It is my understanding that Ostrander and his family had many friends back in the Hattiesburg area and liked living in the area very much. He also very much enjoyed his time at Tech. Lane Burroughs will find a great replacement. Good luck on the new hire.

Thanks. It (our replacement) is done.

Re: USM baseball expected to hire Ostrander
A very poor exchange for Tech baseball. We lost an experienced pitching coach (who will coach against us in C-USA next season) and replaced him with a lightly experienced one in Protho. Same deal losing hitting coach Zulli and promoting Creel as his replacement. I'm sure we 'saved some salary money' on these changes though.

most of our fans did not like the way our hitting or pitching went this year. I didn't care for Zulli as a third base coach.

Re: USM baseball expected to hire Ostrander
We will see what Burroughs can do with these younger asst coaches. Watching several interviews with Ostrander it appeared he was very frustrated with Burroughs' game management of his pitchers. Christian commented several times "That is what coach (Burroughs) wanted to do" on some very questionable game decisions. I hope we aren't dealing with a micromanaging ego issue at Head Baseball Coach. Driving your veteran assistants away for young "yes" men is a great formula for failure.

Apparently, neither did HCLB.

He has plenty of experience. I know a kid that was just drafted from USA as a pitcher and credits Protho for developing him. He doesn't have head coach experience like Ostrander did, but he is great from what I hear.

Prothro is now out.

Any idea who the top candidates are? && why Prothro is now out? Seemed like Prothro has a good past as a pitching coach, South Alabama is always a regional contender.

No idea, but plenty of coaches would love to move up to Tech. Prothro was a good one, but apparently he was a wishy washy and our HC had enough of the drama.

Re: USM baseball expected to hire Ostrander
Per Twitter @ LaTech BSB: Looks like Barton from McMoooo will be next pitching coach:
.@LATechBSB hired @McNeeseBaseball associate head coach Cory Barton to replace Christian Ostrander. Barton, McNeese staff were ++ in 2017

I'll say it so PawDawg doesn't have to...
As first reported yesterday by PawDawg on The BBB.
Now we have our complete staff:
- Burroughs
- Barton (assoc HC, pitching)
- Creel (hitting, recruiting)
- Knight (volunteer)
- Jon. Washam (GA)
- Boggs (GA)

I was a bit confused about him being the pitching coach. When I skimmed the McNeese bio I noticed his past as a hitting coach and missed that he was the pitching coach at McNeese. Recruiting coordinator caught my eye the most.

He's well-rounded: Played JUCO then at Memphis. Coached HS travel ball, collegiate summer league, bullpen, catchers, hitters, pitchers, and several years as recruiting coordinator.

Re: USM baseball expected to hire Ostrander
I have always thought that a former catcher makes a great pitching coach... calling pitching, knowing to take a pitcher out, etc...

They just seem to know the game better
