It turned out exactly how he wanted it.

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
Here are the three schools I want to see on next year's OOC schedule -
FGCU (please continue this series Coach)
UTA
A-State
USL makes a return trip to Ruston
Throw in 3/4 money games against A-5 schools
Then we will probably see 3/4 SWAC/MEAC/SLC
Then that leaves us three for a tourney
That gets us 14 OOC games with a OOC SOS in the neighborhood of 150-175 which is a vast improvement over prior years
-
Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
I'd like to see Tech schedule some OOC games with some of these folks:
Missouri Valley Standings
Atlantic 10 Standings
Colonial Athletic Association Standings
Surely LA Tech can find 5 or 6 quality games against these teams.

WKU getting the invite rubs me the wrong way because they were the very last team invited to C-USA and didn't join until at least a year after everybody else. No way they should've gotten a Battle 4 Atlantis invite before Tech.
And Tech is the only team in C-USA that can't schedule decent OOC games at home or at neutral sites. You'd think the C-USA office would help us out a little bit, especially since our record shows we are likely to have success at a tournament like B4A.
-
Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
I wonder how tough it really is for us to get a decent basketball schedule - our OOC schedule has been absolute garbage the for a while now.
-
Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
If our AD won't allow him to schedule any games with peers from other conferences he has very limited options right? Konkol gets a budget to work with. He probably knew this when he was hired or maybe he didn't realize it would be so rigid. However it is the job of our AD to promote our only two potential revenue programs (MBB and Football), not hold them back by insisting on equality and scheduling crap like the Bossier deal.

I just want a good decent schedule that leaves us in the neighborhood of 135-175 OOC SOS, we can't help our conference SOS

Someone posted this on the CUSA board this week. It says LA Tech has the best mens BB record and the 2nd best football record against CUSA teams since 2014:
Quote:
I ran the stats a few weeks ago, but here are updated numbers that should be pretty accurate. This is since the 3.0 CUSA was technically "fully formed" for the most part with the current teams I think or overall close to it. Basically the past 3 years:
College Football standings last 3 years 2014-2016):
WKU: 31-10 (19-5)
La. Tech: 27-15 (19-5)
Marshall 26-13 (15-9)
MTSU: 21-17 (16-8)
ODU: 21-16 (14-10)
USM: 19-20 (12-12)
UTSA: 13-24 (11-13)
Rice: 16-21 (10-14)
UTEP: 16-22 (10-14)
FIU: 13-23 (10-14)
UNT: 10-27 (6-18)
FAU: 9-27 (7-17)
_________________________
UAB: 6-6 (4-4) - 1 year
Charlotte: 6-18 (3-13) - 2 years
MBB standings last 2.5 years (since new members fully competing): 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017 current
LT 68-27 (37-12)
UAB 61-34 (36-13)
MTSU 66-31 (34-15)
ODU 67-31 (33-16)
UTEP 50-40 (30-18)
WKU 50-41 (26-22)
Marshall 42-48 (26-22)
Rice 41-48 (22-26)
Charlotte 39-50 (21-28)
FIU 35-55 (17-31)
UTSA 30-57 (17-31)
UNT 33-54 (16-32)
USM 24-59 (13-36)
FAU 25-60 (11-37)
Numbers may be a little off on MBB as I just updated them from the past few weeks of play. As you can see the Texas and Florida schools have struggled pretty badly since CUSA 3.0 was sort of fully formed. 5 of bottom 7 in MBB (UTEP only exception) and 6 of bottom 7 (if you include Charlotte) in CFB

Not really. At least not in football. Because unlike most teams in the west --and even some teams in the east-- LA Tech has had to play the best teams (WKU, MTSU, etc...) in the east. Even ODU doesn't do that. For example, this year ODU didn't even have MTSU on its schedule.

Agreed, I said somewhat because I felt it was only a small impact.

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
I, along with everybody else, hate our OOC home schedule. I have always wondered if Ruston's location had anything to do with it. Most majors and mid major teams are going to have to fly into Dallas, catch a connection to Shreveport, and charter a bus an hour to Ruston.
Objectively, if I was an AD of an opposing program that had my pick of away games, this would not be my first choice. I would like to compare Techs home schedule to another "mid-major" that has comparable location issues.

I mean the Lady Techsters can get Auburn to come (granted, their history may be why). And the softball tournament brought in North Dakota of all teams. If we can do that with non-revenue sports, why not a team that makes money?

Attendance wise, having a public bus service driving between Monroe & Shreveport 2+ times per day would make Tech's campus more accessible... and help North Louisiana's economy...
-
Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
I kinda think you answered your own question. WBB and softball are practically write offs for most programs. AD's are under more pressure to maximize profits for MBB and football. Spending the extra money and time for a Louisiana Tech away game may not make sense. I just wonder if there is a way to entice teams to travel here, 2 for 1 kind of deal?
-

Many of our MBB gurus have explained why over the years. Our MBB budget is way too low. We can't afford to schedule home and home games with the likes of those mentioned above by FIM. We are forced to play money games for our own revenue. The coach/team needs a few home game tuneups before conference so we are left with very little money or scheduling room for the two home/two away games mentioned each year. We also waste spots/money playing some of the in state teams.
It has NOTHING to do with our location. That's been a well used excuse for many years by our admin, but it is VERY weak.
-

Would certainly help me attend games. Right now I either have to drive 17-20 hours one way, or fly to Dallas, Shreveport, or Monroe, and rent a car for the weekend. Not a very simple commute. A full service airport would allow me to at least not have to transport myself from Monroe or Shreveport.

Monroe and S'Port get very limited flights from Dallas, Memphis, and Atlanta. How many do you think Ruston would get with a "full service" airport? ;)

Pretty low, unless Dawg alums return in mass ;) But in the "me Me ME!!" world the millennials live in, it would certainly help me, at the right price :D

What is the argument against playing more local teams instead of the SWAC teams or complete no-names? Seems to me that we could get 2-3 "local names" for at least a slight bump in attendance OOC. We will probably have to return a game, which would cost us a home game, but some of our home games were total garbage.
Southern Arkansas - exhibition game, expect a no name
Alabama State - NO INTEREST
Oklahoma Baptist - NO INTEREST
Maryland Eastern Shore - part of the Cal Bears Classic, I get it
Southeastern - Cal Bears Classic
Alcorn - Cal Bears Classic
Prairie View A&M - NO INTEREST
Grambling in Shreveport - will never get moving Grambling/Tech out of Lincoln Parish.
FGCU - I like it
LSUS - tuneup game, okay with it.
Alabama State, Oklahoma Baptist, Prairie View are what ruined it for me. Why wouldn't NWST, ULM, and another belter be better even if it costs us 3 home games over a two year period? Throw in a Grambling home/home instead of Shreveport and you are only losing 1 home game on a yearly basis.
"But we don't make any money off those local teams either." Probably right but it was real hard for me to buy seasons tickets with the garbage we had on the schedule.
Also, didn't Rupp teams used to play home/home series with a few of these teams during the same season? Get us something, anything interesting before conference play.

It is usually an 8 team field. This year Purdue and Auburn were in championship game. Texas Tech and Utah State were also part of the field. The tournament also has a third place game.

More like 2 four-team tourneys with an "eight-team field" ?? 4 "visiting" teams in the Mayan Division play for a Mayan Championship and 4 "host" teams in the Riviera Division play for the Riviera Championship ?? Winner of the Riviera bracket is named the Tournament Champion ?? Riviera Division games televised by CBS Sports, and Mayan Division games on You Tube ??

Plus the greater division hosts 2 games vs. the lesser division. All of these MTE's involve 4 games over 2 weeks.

It appears we are in the greater division, but our division (greater/lesser) could go either way. Early next season we will most likely get to host 2 Southland/SWACesque teams that are part of the TBA lesser division. Or it's also possible early next season we have to play 2 road games at Cartel Conference schools from a possible TBA greater division. But my money is on us being in the greater division, getting our Cancun games on CBSSN, and getting to host 2 "low-majors" in Ruston. If we are in the lesser division, this will be one heck of a tourney (looking at 4 of you: Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Memphis, Minnesota, BYU, Utah, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State).

Sure hope you are right and we will be in the "greater" (host) division rather than the "lesser" (visiting) division. Wonder when they might announce the other division's teams ??

The more I look at it, we have to be in the greater (host) division. Last year Purdue first received their host guitar on January 25. Then they announced the 4 hosts of the greater division on March 2. The lesser division teams weren't announced until June 23.
Either way, I'm sure our OOC schedule as a whole will be structured the same.
The most important thing is that we want our games nationally televised on CBS Sports Network, not streamed on YouTube.

The good news is we are actually playing our peers at a neutral site for a change.
Current KenPom (conference)
91 Louisiana Tech (C-USA)
110 George Mason (A-10)
122 Fresno State (MW)
152 Evansville (MVC)

Didn't we do a "tournament" like this a few years ago? Where regardless of the outcomes of the games, half the field couldn't win?

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
Future LA Tech commit and signee Anthony Duruji from Potomac, Maryland. Looks like he is up for the running in the dunk contest at this years final 4. Can't wait to watch this kid play!
Below is the link from his high school teams twitter account:

Or go to http://www.highschoolslam.com and cast your vote.
Let's get him to the final 4!

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
According to Isabella, Tech is indeed in the Riviera Division alongside Fresno State, George Mason, and Evansville. This IS the hosting division, so we'll be adding two home games against teams not yet named.

We will get two home games from the following
Quote:
Featured in the Mayan Division:
(312) Binghamton - America East
(308) Cal State Northridge - Big West
(233) Montana State - Big Sky
(275) Southeast Missouri State - Ohio Valley

I believe konkol would schedule 100% NAIA home games if he could get away with it.

Our AD is more responsible for the sked than our HC.
Our former coach was given much more rope than our current to make his own schedule. He padded his way to an SEC job.

And this is a CUSA tourney - got to take what they gives us, good and bad....

How is the Cancun Challenge a C-USA Tourney?
I have no problem with whatever 2 home games we get from this tourney. They are non-SWAC/MEAC DI games we don't have to return. That is a good thing.
This is the best MTE Tech has been involved with since I've been following the program. This is progress.
Our past schedules deserve to be strongly criticized, but next year's tourney doesn't deserve any criticism. I don't see any bad with this MTE.
We need a few home guarantees to balance out our road guarantees anyway. Let's hope these 2 games take the place of a couple of our NAIA/D3/D2/SWAC/MEAC home games. My hope is for no more than 2 additional home guarantees on next year's schedule.

Not likely; total BS, in fact. If that were true, all coaches could/would do it. Kinda interesting that mw was selected CUSA Coach of the Year his second year in this conference, and was selected SEC Coach of the Year his second year over there. More like the old saying, "The cream always rises to the top" ??

I was under the impression it was since everything came via the CUSA office -
I agree on everything else you say - I really want us to renew the series with DUNK CITY and maybe add Little Rock with a home and home

Are you saying we have haters of Mike White here?
I haven't seen any anti-White posts. I like him and wish him well. He got Tech MBB back on track after years and years of crap. It was also a tough decision for him to leave Tech and even the UF AD said as much in an interview. He said there was a time when he thought White would decline his offer. In the end, the lure of more money and major conference got MW to Gainesville. I also think it speaks well of him when Speedy and Alex made it point to go visit their former coach.
Yes, he's gone. Tech MBB is doing fine under Konkol. We are fortunate to have both of our hoops' programs in good hands.

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
Home under 150 may be hard to get to but I feel its a reasonable goal to make a rule for ourselves not to schedule below 300. That should certainly be doable.

300 is Too high -
goal should be 175 to 250, with the lone exception being Grambling

I'm beginning to believe the "play Grambling" deal is a mandate rather than a good political move...which I reckon = a good political move in Louisiana.

Yep, and the fee is always going to be more than economic sense dictates.

Can you refresh me on the conference scheduling format? Home and away within the division with one "travel partner" exception (UAB) who along with the East alternates one home and away game each season. Is that it?

Travel Partners
USM/Tech
UTEP/UTSA
Rice/UNT
UAB/MTSU
WKU/Marshall
ODU/Charlotte
FAU/FIU
There's no division format, but the schedule is set up that way
We play H/H with USM, Rice, UTSA, UTEP, UNT. Plus we play the other 8 teams once (4 Home/4 Away) for a total of 18 conference games.
My schedule above just rotates who we played last year.

With Exavian Christon from Hot Springs (AR) onboard, I bet we schedule UALR so his folks can see him.
I remember when we played at UCA for Kenyon McNeail a few years ago.

Pretty sure you can decide which thread to merge into which then change the title. Not sure, but I don't thing the date can be changed. The earliest date would be at the top.

It doesn't matter to me. Pawdawg already edits most of my posts. You can either do that or let the one I started die. There's no reason to have both pinned to the top of the forum.

Re: 2018 Dunkin' Dawgs Schedule
Sleazy Stansbury is pushing for divisions for basketball. He got all the coaches on board.
Problem is it still has to get support from the ADs.
Hoops divisions sound nice in theory, but in reality it would be a logistical nightmare.
With 14 teams, divisions would destroy the travel partner model that reduces travel costs by having to split up MTSU and UAB to create divisions with an odd number of teams.
It would also either mean 19 conference games, meaning some teams would get more home games than others. Or it would mean an 18-game schedule with each team not playing a team from the other division. Or maybe a 20-game conference schedule with each team playing one cross-division opponent twice, but I don't this the coaches would support that many conference games.
I don't think you need divisions to make an 18-game schedule with geographic considerations to which teams play each other twice... just like C-USA has been doing. Tech basically played all the C-USA West teams twice except for UAB the last couple years.
Here's the link. Like most journalism today, it doesn't present the other side: http://www.bgdailynews.com/sports/wk...d8d853543.html
