Fantastic!
Great news!
Our last guy to make it up?
Great!
I heard that he had his debut yesterday and had a 1-2-3 inning and struck out the first batter he faced.
Looked great against the Royals. Congrats Phil. Great young man if you have ever had a chance to visit with him...very humble.
He was electric here - just no run support
I'm so happy for him
I'm reading the rotation on his fastball is upwards of 2,500 rpm at 90+ mph and puts him in the top 5% of all big league pitchers. That kind of fastball has a lot of movement. He can throw high heat and most batters can touch him. That's the pitch that has moved him so fast through the minor leagues to yesterday's debut. Prior coaches had encouraged him to throw a higher percentage of breaking balls. When he got drafted by the Padres, they told him to throw the heater. It's working.

includes great post-game interview from yesterday
Phil Maton now has his first career save with the San Diego Padres!

Maton had another 1-2-3 inning w/ 2Ks including one against NL MVP Kris Bryant
I'm sure he will have a bad outing at some point, but so far he is on fire. I've picked him up in my fantasy baseball leagues. I think SD may give him a shot at being the closer as long as he continues to pitch the way he has so far. If not as the closer, at least as middle relief in more games than not.
I hope Maton pitches tonight. I'll be at Wrigley Field tonight for the game.
Interesting...everyone knows about Maton's spin rate. I was reading an article and saw this as the other reason for his "elite" fastball:
"He's a guy who's delivering the pitch closer to the plate than 95 percent of guys in the majors and the spin on his fastball is higher than 95 percent of guys in the major league game."
Not only does he have an "elite spin rate", he also has "elite extension".
No strikeouts, but Maton pitched 1 inning today and was credited with the win. He only threw 11 pitches (9 strikes) and didn't give up any hits or walks. He is still rocking a 0.00 ERA. 6 of his strikes were foul balls. 0 called strikes and 0 swinging strikes

He is dead to me....
When Tech players aren't drafted on the Saints or the Cubs - they become irrelevant to me...
I enjoy watching him play and succeed but not at the expense of my team
