Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
UPDATE - 9/13/2017 - A lot of this info is outdated, but PS Vue is still a great option
PS Vue is now available on Roku.
For about $30 you can stream a bunch of channels including ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NBC Sports Network.
There is NO CBS Sports Network (but we aren't playing FB their this year). Also, ABC/NBC/Fox are on demand only in most areas - you can watch shows the day after. CBS, PBS and CW are not on at this time. (I recently added an antenna and bought a Tablo to watch the networks).
Also important, FOX Sports Southwest does not look to beavailable in Shreveport, so no Rangers games and no ROOT sports so no Astros. There is a fox sports network, but mainly UFC, poker, etc.
For $5 more you can add a few more sports stations: beIN, Golf, ESPNU, ESPN News, SEC Network (we do play on SECN).
My DirecTV bill is around $114 (over $25 of that bill is equipment, dvr & hd fees).
Here is a great article about PS Vue: http://www.techhive.com/article/3047...ternative.html
You don't have to have a Playstation to get this, you just sign up for a PS account. You can sign up for a free 1-week trial to see if you like it. I plan to cancel DTV next week and save $80/month!
Here is a list of channel options

You need to have wifi or a connect device. PS Vue is only available on certain devices right now, including Fire TV, Roku, Sony Smart TVs. Comcast just went up to 1 TB of data available - check your bill.
We have been streaming almost every night this month (I watched all of the baseball games online) and we are currently at 111 GB of 1024 GB (1 TB).
You can connect up to 5 TVs, but they all need to be on the same network. You can't watch outside of your home.

for OTA, yes - Tablo is basically a whole-home DVR. It's pricey to start - $200 for record 2 at time, $300 for 4 shows. But you can watch live OTA TV - I watched US Open.
http://www.cnet.com/products/nuvyyo-tablo/
The picture using antenna seems to be better than the picture from DirecTV for the networks. Tablo does have a cost to have the TV Guide - $4.99/mo or $150 one-time. I'm still in the free period so I haven't decided which way to go.
In memphis you can get 20+ free channels with an antenna http://tvlistings.aol.com/listings/t...-the-air/38134
Here in Shreveport, there were ASN games on KTBS 3.2 (or 3.3) Weather or News channel, that I couldn't watch with DTV, but I will be able to now.
Also with the TABLO, you have to buy an external storage device to record shows. I bought a 1 TB for <$50.

Interesting. For years the Comcast cable menu has shown a FS Atlanta feed on the menu, but it has always been an actual FSSW feed (Rangers games). I always assumed it was a Comcast mistake. Think it could it be a Fox Sports mistake?

I tried it because other forums said it workec.
It also show FS New Orleans - a subfeed of FSSW

Another Option I just saw: Southern Fibernet out of Atlanta has a nationwide service in Beta right now. They have multiple packages at different price ranges, including a Sports Only pacakge at $19.99.
The sports package is not listed on the signup page, but was listed on this Packages

Not going to be getting rid of cable for a while due to need for wifi and need for numerous TVs. New question...
If I don't want to rent another digital or HD box from Comcast ($10ish/mo) along with running new cable, which of the above discussed devices will work best for my outside television which will have unlimited wifi access.

Yes - if you live in an area that gets one of the FSNs carrying the game. . The Fox Sports Southwest feed has Texas Rangers, but my guide shows a separate Fox Sports Net feed with our game.
Also, w/ your PS Vue account, you can log in to Fox Sports Go app and the game is listed there as well.
On a side note to the original intent of this thread, I am very happy with PS Vue. I'm saving $80/month on my TV bill and get to watch MOST of the shows I want. There are a few that aren't available, but for $80/month, I can buy those!
-
Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
DirecTV Now just came out. It's not available on ROKU yet, so I haven't tried it. If you sign up for 1 month, they will give you a Amazon Fire TV Stick. If you sign up for 3 months, they will give you an APPLE TV.
The $35 price is a limited time special, but you can keep that prices (subject to reasonable price increases ) as long as you are subscribed.
http://decider.com/2016/11/30/decide...r-directv-now/
DirecTV Now does not have a DVR component yet. You can only watch some channels last 72 hours of programming. Not good if you like to wait awhile and binge watch a show or if you only watch on weekends.
DTVNow & Sling don't allow you to log onto the APPS of different channels to watch anytime. PSVue does.
They all let you log onto ESPN3 content.
Also: Fox Sports Southwest was not available on DTVNow in Shreveport win I checked. It is available on PSVue & Sling

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
For those in Northeast Louisiana & Southern Arkansas, you recently got access to KNOE (CBS) on PS Vue. That is the only local channel available, but you get Next Day on Demand for ABC, Fox, NBC.
Also, Alexandria area recently got access to their CBS channel.
Shreveport still doesn't have CBS available through streaming (luckily I've got an antenna).
To see what channels your area gets via ps vue, enter your zip code here: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/network/vue/channels/

I'd like to read a report from somebody in the area outside of a 20 mile radius who has a digital/HD antenna. How much did they pay? etc....
I purchased one of the cheapest (the ones they advertise on TV) for $10. I believe I could pay around $35 for an antenna that would provide all local networks along with several other local channels.
I'd pull the trigger on getting rid of Comcast if I had a source for wifi.
-
Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
I bought a LEAF 2 pack from Sam's for $50. Got the small one in the bedroom and the larger, amplified one in the living room. I found that if I had the amplifier is on, I wasn't getting some channels that I know we should have seen. I took the amplifier off and it immediately picked up all stations great.... with the exception of KTAL, NBC 6. I have no idea why that one doesn't get good signal for me even though it's only 20 miles away to the north.
As for internet, this site isn't 100% accurate, but you might see someone else that can provide you with HS internet: http://broadbandnow.com/

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
I bought this antenna (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and put it in the attic. I connected it to the cable splitter from DirecTV and I get my local channels in all rooms. You also have to purchase a mount for the antenna

Direct TV was getting $103 per month for my daughter to keep it on Disney Junior for 8 hours a day... Now I'm not paying a dime, and can watch all of the shows on demand as I wish, for $450 upfront and nothing more for the last 2 years.

Sports Channels Included: ESPN, local Fox Sports or CSN, FS1, NBCSN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, FS2, BTN, SEC, CBS SN, ESPNNEWS, & Golf.
This is the first one I've seen that has CBS Sport Network. Hulu might also have it.

I haven't checked out DTV because it's not on Roku.
This spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=381384110) has a comparison guide of PSV/Sling/DTV.
For us, we had to figure out what channels we HAD to have, then found the best service. At the time, our choices were SLING & PS Vue. Vue won out.
Right now, I'm still choosing VUE - you get ALL 4 majors (KSLA (CBS) is Live, ABC/NBC/Fox are on demand).

I guess either they don't broadcast that way any more or push a lot less signal. I like to get the local news & thats been a deterrent to cutting the cord. But recently I noticed ksla saying they are available on Roku. If ktbs will follow suit maybe cord cutting is possible.

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Comcast has a new service in BETA for Comcast Internet users only http://cordcuttersnews.com/comcast-a...ting-18-month/
Looks a lot like crappy cable to me - $18 + 30 + 15 + 10= 73. I get the same stuff (except Discovery's channels and Viacom) for $45 with PS Vue.
Quote:
The service starts with a $18 a month core package that includes locals like ABC, FOX, and NBC. You will also find C-Span, QVC, and HSN. From there you can add additional packages on top of the $18 a month core package to get more channels.
Here are all the add-ons Comcast currently offers:- Sports and News ($30 per month): CNBC, CNN, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News, ESPNU, Fox Business, Fox News, Fox Sports 1, Golf Channel, MSNBC, NBC Sports, NFL Network and regional sports networks based on market.
- Entertainment ($15 per month): A&E, AMC, Animal Planet, BET, Bravo, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, E!, Food Network, FX, FXX, Hallmark Channel, History, HGTV, Lifetime, OWN, Syfy, TBS, TNT, TV One, USA, VH1.
- Kids and Family ($10 per month): Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Freeform, MTV, National Geographic Channel, Nick Jr., Nickelodeon, NickToons, Universal Kids, TeenNick, TLC.
- Latino ($5 per month): BabyFirst, CNN en Español,Cine Dinamita, Cine Latino, Cine Mexicano, Cine Sony Television, Discovery Familia, Discovery en Español, Galavisión, History en Español, Pasiones, Viendo Movies, Vme Kids.
- Deportes ($7 per month): beIN, beINñ, ESPN Deportes, Fox Deportes, LAS, NBCUniverso, Univision tDN. (Telemundo, Unimas and Univision are provided when not included in the broadcast tier)
So if you want ESPN the Comcast package will cost you $48 a month plus taxes.

Anybody have the AT&T/Direct TV combo. I know there are some catches, but the unlimited streaming from your AT&T device is attractive to those of us who have dealt with lost satellite signals and expensive internet access.
My first question would be, do I have to upgrade my current AT&T phone package?

Yes, they confirmed I must have one of the unlimited plans.
My AT&T plan has four devices and I'm paying approximately $200 for 20gb data which has been plenty with 2 teenagers.

sportdawg, I have three "streaming" devices - a Sumsung Blue Ray Player, a Sony Blue Ray Player and a Phillips TV. At least they all have WiFi which lets me get HULU, Netflix etc. I am thinking about HULU live for about $50/mo which includes the regular HULU, too. Do you have any experience with them? Especially the sports channels.

My in-laws just signed up for Hulu w/ Live TV. I haven't played around with it much. But here are my quick thoughts (All of this was on a ROKU, so I don't know if the format is different onyour setup) - it doesn't have a traditional "TV Guide" if you need that type of thing. It has a list of channels and underneath shows what's on.
We watch the Michigan/Loyola Chicago game on Hulu and everything was fine.
In Houston, it looks like you get all of your locals.
For Tech Sports - it comes with CBS Sports Net & SEC Network (which we'll probably have 2 games there next year). It does not have beIN sports if we play there - but you can get a free Sling Trial to watch. It does not have AT&T Sportsnet SW if you're a Astros/Rockets fan, but it does have Fox Sports SW if you're a Rangers fan.

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Thanks. I also see you can watch on two devices at one time. I find Netflix funny. If the Sony device is on first I can watch on my Samsung, but not vice versa.
My wife has a lot of recorded on U-verse right now so we are kind of waiting until she's seen all she wants. I see that HULU has some free Cloud recording but I am thinking about a TiVO. I already have one antenna and it gets super reception HD because we're only about 2-3 miles from the transmitters. We have bout 60 or 70 HD channels but I can't figure out what's on them. A lot of Indian and other ethnic groups - of course Hispanic.

Getting ready to pull the trigger and need to see about internet options in Shreveport. AT&T says they don't service my address with DSL in Shreve Island. I've got Comcast now and could stay with them for high speed, but is anyone familiar with any other services?

Do you not have access AT&T Fiber (U-Verse) yet? I'd stick with comcast. Call them and tell them your switching to AT&T and they may reduce your bill.
I don't think we have access to any other providers.
I'm paying $70 for AT&T.

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Question for the tech wizards. I've got a 10 yr old Sony 52" with a matched Sony theater system. The interface to the internet is cumbersome but I'm use to it so it's been fine. The picture and sound are excellent. With all these different streaming option I'm wondering if it's time to update and get new equipment? Are the new TV/internet interfaces truly easier to use? Or maybe there are things on the horizon that would make waiting a little longer the thing to do.
(Not an Apple guy and too invested in Android to swap over, so Apple TV isn't an option)
Thanks in advance.

I use ROKU on all my TVs. I love it. Pretty easy to learn how to use and LOTS of channel options (they don't call them apps).
Here are some how to use videos https://support.roku.com/category/20...etting-started

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Just found out KTBS will be rolling out their Roku app in about 2 weeks. Think it may be time to cut that cord.
-
Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
A huge part of cutting the cord is buying a decent antenna. If you go to Antenna Web, you can put in your address to determine what type of antenna you need. You can usually get ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS and CW in your area, plus all the subchannels of those.

Yeah, checked that out a while back. Even with a 30' tower I get no signal from any station anywhere. That's why I've been waiting for the Roku app for KTBS. I didn't want to be limited to just KSLA.
I expect I'll pick up a Roku Ultra in the next week or two.

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
If you are thinking about cutting cable and going to an streaming service, but don't know which one to choose, Suppose.tv is a great source.
You input the channels you want and it sorts your options by price. It also lists Free trial offers and device offers (Fire TV, roku, etc).

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Simple explanation please. I don’t want to go back through the whole thread. If I want to buy Roku or similar, will it eat so much data that I pay just as much as I did for Direct? Will it work on a 100MB connection or will I have to upgrade to 300MB? Do you have to have a setup for each tv?

you do have to have a setup for each tv. Can be purchased for as little as 30 bucks per tv, but if you have 4K probably want to spend a little more. I spend a whole lot less since dropping DirectTV, but I was already paying for highest level internet. Directv with Sunday ticket down to streaming and roku saved me about 170 bucks per month and I can still stream Sunday ticket for 100 bucks per season.

Re: Getting Rid of Cable Just got EASIER!
Playstation Vue is shutting down 1/30/20 :( In my opinion, this was the best cable alternative. I've used it for several years (once it was available on Roku). I think Sony screwed themselves by calling it "PlayStation Vue" instead of "Sony Vue." I'm sure most consumers assumed you needed a PlayStation. Now I have to research the others again and see what's best.
