Selection Sunday and the RPI
I am wondering what today's selection show will be like when the new weighted RPI is used by the Committee. On the SIU board several weeks ago it was pointed out that no team with an RPI of 40 or better and fewer than 10 losses has never been left out.
Will the MVC get 5 bids? How many teams from power conferences (Big 6) with fewer than 20 wins with RPIs in the 50s and 60s make the tournament?
For the past two decades, in various years, I've seen teams from mid-major conferences with RPIs/Sagarin ratings in the 50s and 60s told by the committee that was too low.
Will the shoe be on the other foot this year?
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Watched a show on ESPNU, with Jay Bilas and a VP of NCAA MBB. Very interesting info on the Selection Committee, how it works, etc...
They said the RPI is just another tool they use, and don't just go by it. Translation: when they want a Seton Hall instead of a Utah State, and the Hall has the RPI edge, they use it. If USU has the RPI edge, well then, it's just another tool....
Karl Benson is one of ten on this year's committee. Yo, Karl! earn your keep and get USU into the Dance!
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Benson did it. Utah State's RPI was 46, and several teams below that have higher seeds. But the Aggies got in, and deservedly so.

Great job Benson. Why couldn't he do that to get Tech to a bowl though? The feeling I am getting so far is the committee doesn't think too highly of non BCS schools other than CUSA.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Nevada a 5 seed. Not totally excited. Their TV signal must be slow.
MVC has four teams.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Nevada has a great shot to get to the Sweet 16 out of Salt Lake City.

Which would be good for the WAC purse strings.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
And the MWC got all of 2 bids...the committee saw through their powder-puff schedules. And that was still one bid too many.
No team ever in the RPI Top 30 got left out..until today. Missouri State was 21...if you are going to use RPI you have to follow it down to at least the 30 mark to see who gets in. Missouri State at 20-8 with the #46 schedule out and Air Force a 50 RPI with the #158 schedule gets in?
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Arizona an 8 seed? Teams like Cincy and Missouri State might take our NIT home game.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Also is there a reason they put all of the Louisiana teams in the same bracket?
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Congrats to USU...hopefully that will give us a first round bye in the NIT. Looks like the commitee see how tough the WAC can be.
PS - would hate to be the team that has to play USU first round
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Tech likely won't be in the group of 4 NIT 1-4 seeds to get an opening round bye and then the possibility to host a first round game. A 5-6 seed is more likely for Tech, and that's an opening round bye and a road first round game. Not sure Tech will fall to a 7-8 seed to host an opening round game against a 9-10 seed.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
Don't give Benson credit for getting Utah St. in. They earned it. Benson had to recuse himself as the WAC commish and continues to be inept as our commissioner.

Don't overlook the fact simply that he is on the committee. Of couse he can't deliberate on WAC teams, but neither can any other conference commissioner on his own teams.
At least the committee didn't put Utah State at RPI 46 in the same category as Missouri State....NIT.
Re: Selection Sunday and the RPI
These CBS guys are idiots. They are throwing out all of these numbers about how ACC historically has more Sweet 16 appearances than MVC so they should have more bids. All the guy has to do to answer it is explain ACC usually gets 1-4 seeds so it is easier for them to make it and they also usually get more teams.
