Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Per Big Jason Jones -
I predict one of the larger traveling fan bases to visit JAS when they come to town - which I would assume may be opening home game next year...
Jag fans HAVE money and will travel...
-
Re: Someone has finally listened - southern univeristy coming to ruston in @)!%
It will draw a lot in the area just to see Southern. Gonna be really loud in JAS especially once the SEZ is complete.
-
Re: Someone has finally listened - southern univeristy coming to ruston in @)!%
Get your hotel reservation ASAP. . . . especially if GSU tries to schedule home game that day, too . . . .
-
Re: Someone has finally listened - southern univeristy coming to ruston in @)!%
I can see this exceeding capacity of 27k. We should look at adding temporary stands in the NEZ (north endzone).
-
Re: Someone has finally listened - southern univeristy coming to ruston in @)!%
Love this, always said we should be playing Grambling and Southern if we are playing an FCS school. Great move.
-
Re: Someone has finally listened - southern univeristy coming to ruston in @)!%
Sell out guaranteed if this is the first game of the season and maybe any game of the season.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Younger fan here. Why are we excited about playing a SWAC school? (yes I understand it's a massive achievement for us to schedule any game whatsoever at home).

Because the G-Men or Southern will easily bring 10k fans to the Joe, that's why. Plus it (in most years) should be an easy win.

Southern and most SWAC's travel incredibly well, they use the game as more of a reunion than a competition, especially with in-state schools. I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop in the summer when it gets moved to SBC... :furious3:

Beat me to it. I was surprised to read the thread and see that it said Ruston and not Independence Stadium.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
A lot of north Louisiana and south Arkansas folks will come see a HBCU...more for the entertainment of the band/tailgate/party than the football game.

Good question. Other than a decent gate (Note: Only one or two SWAC schools will provide a decent gate), playing a SWAC school does nothing for us other than providing a win. Ironically, a win against a SWAC school will likely hurt us if we are in the hunt for an access bowl. It is bad enough we have a Belch school on the schedule.
I have a hard time buying the argument that we can't get home games. Other schools pull it off. We have had several good homes games in our hands, but for one reason or another decided not to do it: BYU (still waiting for an answer on what happened with this one), Baylor (scheduled and canceled by us), Kansas (turned down a home-and-home) ...
I often wonder if the mantra that we can't schedule home games is just to lower our expectations.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Concessions won't be a big deal cuz nobody will patronize them during halftime band performance.
I'd say SEZ completion may impact game location.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
BVD happened to the BYU game and turned down TCU for a home game as well a few years a ago.
We are playing an FCS team every year so it only makes sense to schedule smart and bring in teams that will buy tickets and make you $$$. Same reason we should play Northwestern like last year, best crowd in several years and adds to game day experience for fans and players. Also brings in business to sponsors, local businesses, and Ruston.

This better not happen!! I'm not going there at night, and if La Tech does that to me and I don't go I'm going to get my ticket $ back for that game one way or the other. But JAS would be excellent, great atmosphere, I like this game for 2015.

If it's a hot game, it'll be a busy day at the concession.

Because if you're going to play an FCS team most years (and we are) then you want to play FCS teams that bring in a good gate.

I
When we're getting left out of access bowls, that'll be the time to start worrying about our scheduling. I think we're ok for the moment.
Past that, while FCS schools are very much not all equally difficult to beat, I think the general public and even the committee will just lump them all together. If we're playing an FCS team at all (and we will be in most years) there is no sense in trying to split hairs for SOS purposes. It just gets filed under "FCS team" no matter whether you played North Dakota State or Mississippi Valley State.

I do not diagree with any of the posts so far, ULL has huge crowds when they play Southern. My only concern is that we historically play down to inferior programs ( and not just NLU)-we struggled against Grambling in Shreveport and lost to a i-aa team a few years ago. One thing for sure, ALL of us have to not take game as win ahead of time!

I often wonder if the mantra that we can't schedule home games is just to lower our expectations.
We've certainly done some of this to ourselves and passed on good chances for decent home games, but it really is hard to get home games.
P5 teams do not like to travel. And if they are going to travel, most of them are going to do neutral site games against other big names. Yeah, we can all name good games that we've had or should have had, and can think of examples of other G5 schools with decent home games, but the exception basically proves the rule. Those games are exceptions.
We've done ok with other G5 teams over the last 10 years or so, but it's not like we can just pick whomever we want. We've got to work with our conference schedule, their conference schedule, their willingness to play, our other commitments, their other commitments, etc. Not to mention the fact that several of what would have been good OOC teams until recently are now conference games. And what would be an awesome G5 OOC series anyway? Houston or SMU are close. Tulsa and Memphis are not terribly far. Boise and UCF have some history with us and have been really good recently. After that. . .
I actually think that general fandom tends to go too far in the opposite direction of what you suggest. I think (based on years of reading this board) that we've all become so used to NCAA football simulators on PlayStation that we think scheduling is a piece of cake and can't fathom why we don't just call up Arkansas and Notre Dame and play them in Ruston whenever we feel like it. It's fun to talk about dream schedules every off-season on the internet, but I really wonder about how our fan version of how this stuff works matches up with reality.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
LOL... Guess you didn't attend many GSU games. Yes, the concessions at the half will be busy, just not from the jazillion Southern fans who are supposed to attend. Happens all the time. Football team wonders where the crowd went in the 3rd quarter.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Home and home gives up the big paycheck for one and done. It's all about budget and not about best fan-attractive home schedule.

WELL DONE!!!!

Love it! I think we should play Southern every four years in Ruston. Grambling, too.

It is a great move. Tech Football & athletics in general should have a positive economic impact on the local economy. Packed restaurants and hotels are welcomed by the local merchants. Plus Southern's band will make halftime more entertaining. Besides Southern & Grambling, we should add Alcorn & Jackson State in that rotation. Their fans travel well also.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I disagree with the call. Harms the rep we are building. If all you want is a full house play the JUCO while they're hot or semi-hot and their fans will come, too (as long as LSU is playing) and I a not advocating playing them, either, really. Oh hell, even LSPOO plays McNeese every not and then.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Guys, you do realize this is Southern, don't you???? The way you all are going crazy, you would have thought we signed the NE Patriots to come to Ruston!!!!
I am not so concerned with how many people a team will bring of their fans, but rather how many 'on the fence' Tech fans we pull in!!!! I just don't think that the folks in SBC, Monroe or even the Homer or Minden folks will come running to see us play the Jags!!!! Band or no band...........
For the opening of the SEZ project, we should have done a better job of planning and gotten a bigger name.
IMHO

We'd have to return a game to the JUCO. We don't have to return a game to Southern. To get more than 5 home games per year, we have to schedule an FCS team every year. Grambling and Southern give Tech a huge attendance, an easy win, and an entertaining halftime performance. I don't think playing any other FCS opponent could benefit Tech more than GSU and SU.

We are going to be playing an FCS team next season and most seasons after that (like almost everyone else at the FBS level). If you don't like playing FCS schools, you're not alone and we've got tons of threads hashing out the pros and cons of playing an FCS team at all.
Past that, it's a matter of degree. If you think there is a better FCS team Tech should be playing (note that I don't mean a superior on-the-field team, I know Southern isn't that great in those terms - which I actually view as a mark in their favor), then let's hear it. Nobody thinks this is better than getting Mississippi State in Ruston, or even Southern Miss or Houston or whoever you think is a good OOC team.
The kudos here are for Southern as opposed to Alabama A&M or Hampton or Norfolk State. It's not a matter of "of yeah, we're playing Southern instead of USC or Alabama."
Apples to apples, it's probably a good move. Thus, "going crazy" to the tune of 30 posts on a message board.
If your issue is just the timing of opening our stadium improvements, then maybe that's a more legit beef - but even that doesn't bother me too much.

You could possibly make an argument for one team that we now need to put back in their place.
But generally speaking, yeah (although I don't know how well Grambling draws in Lincoln Parish - maybe better in Ruston than in Grambling for a chance to play us).

That is my biggest issue - bringing in a FCS team, especially one from Louisiana for this event. Perhaps I have lived in Houston too long, but I never hear about PVA&M or Tx Southern, unless it is something bad. They just don't make news here and I doubt anyone would want to go see them playing UH or Rice, outside of die-hard fans. I am equating that thought process to the HBU's in Louisiana for the casual north Louisiana fan, who I think we are targeting, especially with the new stadium improvements, game day experience, etc. That is who I would be trying to get into the stands, if I were TMc!!!!! But as I said before, maybe I have lived in Houston too long. You guys seem to think this will do the trick.... Suffice it to say, I am skeptical!!!

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
SU fan here. We have known about this in BR for a month or so. Looking forward to traveling to North Louisiana for a game. Food for thought, SU owns more stadium attendence records in Louisiana than LSU lol. SLU, Nicholls, ULL, and Northwestern St.

Southern annually plays in half of the largest Black TV game of the year at the Mercedes Benz Superdome. If we had suites to rent out to the visiting team, we would have sold out this morning.

Had a blast tailgating with Grambling fans in Shreveport and will have a blast tailgating with the Jag fans this fall!!!
That Gameday will be huge!!!!
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
No way there should be any consideration of moving this game to Shreveport unless the crowd is guaranteed to exceed 40K. And in that guarantee I would include getting a financial guarantee up front north of double the 2010 BVDV "lion's share" that turned out to be under $300K.
And IMO I can't see Shreveport being able to offer that level of guarantee.
Tech should start making plans early to park spectators at remote locations around Ruston and run shuttle buses to the stadium. And encourage parking all over campus and run a shuttle bus loop.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Add temporary stands and finally sell out the Joe. This is a good game for us. Southern travels well and they spend well. There will be a lot of happy store owners in Lincoln and Ouachita parish on GameDay. Good job by Tmac.
Also to answer the question about the difference between PA or Texas southern and the LA HTC schools. Southern and Grambling are known world wide in the black community. They have fans everywhere.

Do you want a bigger name or a bigger crowd to open you stadium with? A big name school does not travel well to a team they feel they are above my friend. We have not earned the rep to fill the stadium with a big name. ULM hosted baylor on TV and baylor didn't pack the stands

While I agree with your general point, I was at that Baylor/ULM game (as bad as I hate to say it) with my wife who has 3 degrees from there. I can promise you someone packed that stadium because it was nearly full at the start of the second quarter.

Need to contact Ruston shop owners now and get their pulse on working a few extra hours. Closing at 5 on Friday and noon on Saturday will not generate any extra revenue. Have been saying for a long time that shops in a college town need to adapt away from 8-5 and 9-12 schedules. How do you think they will react to that?

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Because if you MUST schedule an FCS opponent it makes sense to play one that brings a good crowd..See NSU. Only makes sense.

Maybe they weren't expanding their stadium, but I still don't see the problem. We're going to play an FCS team. Might as well be as good of an FCS team (and again, I mean in terms of drawing crowds, not on the field) as we can get.

This will be a game for Tech fans to celebrate the new SEZ and for fans of both teams to celebrate the beginning of a new football season. Tech fans should turn out in huge numbers to celebrate this facilities upgrade milestone, and it is generally believed Southern will bring lots of fans who will add to the environment for the game. It should all be good -- as long as we win. :D

Personally I think you are wrong on both counts. Big name schools not travelling well would be a huge crowd for us when you add it to our already die-hard 20k. Secondly, we would fill the stadium with a big name school given the right promotion and ground swell. We are essentially opening a brand new look for our stadium after a successful season with a bowl win and a new QB who played in the SEC for a couple of seasons. On the right night (not on a Thursday or Friday evening - but a Saturday evening 6 o'clock or later), we would be the 'place to be' in N La for that event! Be it Baylor, Ms St, or one of the lesser successful B12 or SEC teams, 'schedule it and they will come' (using my best James Earl Jones voice).
I cannot speak to what NLU does or did when they get these teams to come to their spot, I have not worried about them since the 80's......
Guys, we have a better product to sell than most of you think, we just have to tell the right story and get the right opportunities for people to come see it!

Baylor is an anomaly. They bring out the church crowd. MS. State wont fill our stadium, and the chances we have had with some of the big boys won't come to the Joe but instead will opt for the Indy bowl. This game is really a must. We have never sold out our stadium in its history. At roughly 27.5K its far more likely now, and thats why I think adding stands in the endzone for this game would be huge. If you could put 1500 folks around the north endzone and we win the game pretty handily, it would set the tone attendance wise for the rest of the season.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I just hope we prepare for a crowd because the NWST crowd, concessions, parking, traffic, coordination, etc. etc. was a cluster. I have countless examples of how awful things were through the entire first quarter on the student side of the stadium. I love the opponent, but I just hope we actually prepare for this game. We don't need another version of the NWST game off the field or on the field.

Part of being successful is learning how to handle that success. Its worth the extra money to add extra parking, extra concessions ect.. when we stand to gain a tremendous amount of extra cash and recruitment of new fans to the stadium.

THIS!!! Regardless of who we play for the opener it is imperative that we have our shit together. Losing that game did not turn fans off nearly as much as the giant cluster-**** going on off the field did IMO. Hell, I came real close to a fight with some HS kid's mother because her disrespectful little spawn refused to get out of my seats. All because we don't have the forethought to put up a sign in OO that says its reserved seating. I'm guessing there will be a lot of casual fans in attendance based on this year's success and the SEZ (and even more who have no clue where to go if we play SU), and if we put on the same bush-league Mickey Mouse show we had this year it'll be the last time we see most of them for a while.
Just in case anyone in charge is reading this:
Parking needs to be CLEARLY marked with signs as soon as you exit the Interstate.
Concessions need to be overstocked and staffed with competent adults.
Make sure all the ticket scanners work ahead of time and have a back up plan in case something goes wrong.
Announcer, Video Board Operator, and BOP all need to be on the same page.
Put up a sign and have people checking ticket in OO
In the event that we lose call of the fire works.
Sorry for the thread drift, but it's never too soon to start thinking about this stuff. I'm tired of this make it up as we go along crap.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
For parking, the school should acquire several shuttle busses and promote on-campus parking. The busses can then be used for students during the week for transportation to local businesses.
Even just renting them for game days could enhance the gameday experience.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Its my sincerest hope that one day we can put in actual seats instead of bleachers. That would help with seating by a good bit, it would also help us in spreading the student section out. They cram in there like sardines and it make the rest of the sections look empty.

SU has double the fans NSU has lol. I know the amount we are getting paid, our AD said it on Jaguar Journal. SU commands that amount. You get a guaranteed sell out plus the #2 rated band in the country behind Ohio State.

I so agree with this. DD was here for one of the 11:00 games so no time to shop before game, and she wanted to stop at a couple of her favorite shops after the game, and nothing was open at 2:30. Missed out on $$ that day for sure. Had it been a 6:00 game we would have had a lot more time to do damage. She's not big on tailgating all day, so she could have shopped up until late afternoon, way past noon or 2:00. I guess, though, the shop owners all have to tailgate and can't be in two places at once. . . . .

Do you not understand that during two of the past three years, we had teams that were in the conversation for the access/BCS bowls? We are not as far off as you think. We were only nine points from having a strong shot of being there in 2014. While I don't think it is likely, I do know there is a chance we could be the one to get the access bowl bid this year if things break our way. Having a SWAC team on the schedule will kill our strength of schedule. What hurt Marshall this year? Their out of conference schedule. Had they played and beat anyone with a pulse in OOC, the could have overcome the WKU loss.
I can see the arguments for a good gate with Southern and Grambling, but this is lazy scheduling and the gate argument does not outweigh everything else. With the opening of the long-awaited facility, you would think the University would have signed a big name for the grand opening. Playing Southern has no TV appeal. CUSA would have loved to see one of its top programs open the season with a decent opponent at home while showcasing a state-of-the-art facility on national TV. Instead, we have a game that no one outside of Louisiana will care about or see. Small-time thinking produces small-time results.
While there are some things that I like about our AD, I often wonder if he believes Tech should distance itself from the NSUs, ulms, ulls and McNeeses of Louisiana. It seems we are in a Southland-mode of thinking when it comes to scheduling.
I remember how we were all longing for the days that we would be in a good regional conference so we wouldn't need to play ull, NSU or Southern. Isn't it ironic that we are now in a regional conference and we are loading up our non-conference schedules with ull, NSU and Southern?
PS: For the record, I strongly believe that no FBS team should play FCS teams.

This is very good scheduling - most everyone plays ONE FCS school annually
There is not a better FCS school in the country to host in Ruston than SU -
A bad scheduling argument can be made about the Cajuns - but not SU
The Cajuns were the EASY way out -

Playing an FCS team every year won't keep us out of an access Bowl. We simply have to play 1 to 2 P5 teams every seaon. A 11-2 Boise beat out Marshall not because of an FCS game but because they didn't play any P5. You won't have to worry about Tech being left out of an Access Bowl due to scheduling. We always play a couple P5s

Well, like it or not we are playing a FCS team every year. Most rather play Southern than Central Arkansas, Nicholls, etc. This game isn't taking the place of a possible one and one with a better team. If playing a FCS team is "small time" then every team in the country is small time.

You may not think FBS schools should play FCS teams (I'm not crazy about it, but in the current set-up it's really a life-saver for home games for the G5 schools), but we're going to be doing it (and needing to do it) for as long as we're playing 2 money games per year.
I really don't think we're likely to see the committee distinguish between FCS teams. And even if they did, you can't drive yourself crazy trying to figure out who's going to be a good FCS team in a given year just on the off chance that the one G5 auto-bid is going to come down to two teams with the same record against similar schedules except that one played a better FCS team. That just isn't something you can plan for. Nobody tried to distinguish a difference between Baylor playing Northwestern State and TCU playing Samford. It was just "they each played an FCS team."

If you're arguing FBS instead of playing an FCS at all, then it wasn't lazy, it was a conscious choice. We have two away games, and the second half of a one-for-one on the books. If you want another home game, you're either booking an FCS team or starting another one-for-one (which is fine, but you do tighten up your options for whatever year you have to return the game). Not to mention the fact that a lot of those schools that have openings would not be willing to travel first. Or wouldn't be able to play the week we have open. Or wouldn't travel to Ruston at all. Or are even less attractive than most FCS teams for our fans (despite playing at the FBS level).

See, I'll take the home and home or 2 for 1, but my issue is that with 2 money games you don't have room for this to get you enough home games.
If we play all our games on the road, we're not going to be worrying about access bowls because we're not going to be winning.

Cool, but I will say this. SU turned down $220,000 with expenses paid by Espn, for the Swac/Meac Challange in Orlando, which is being broadcasted live on Espn2. UGA is also paying SU $650,000. Espn paid the expenses for the Challange , we flew last time we went, Team, Band, and cheerleaders. It's higher than the last number you posted BTW lol. It's above $300,000 and below $400,000.

Well, I hope like hell we didn't pay TOO MUCH. At the end of the day, you're still an FCS school, and THERE IS a point of diminishing returns. When it comes to FCS schools, nobody cares whether you beat Southern Univ or Central Arkansas or Lamar. Come to think of it, I don't know why we don't just play Grambling in Ruston. That would probably sell out too.

Point of diminishing returns is correct. I would much rather play Grambling State and not have to listen to the whole "Self Important Drivel" that this Southern fan continues to post. I hope they come and pack the stadium but don't tell me how important Southern Football is.

Didnt mean to offend anyone, but we take SU football seriously. Very seriously. Folks travel all over the country to SUpport us.

That's as true now as it was back in 2010. Playing that game in the I-bowl was a ridiculous idea.
Since the world we live in surrounding college football all but demands we schedule an FCS team to get a 6th home game, this is as good a decision as I can think of. It'll be fun for all involved.

You and Dwayne are going to communicate quite well together between now and the opening game.

[QUOTE=Brad;1494556][QUOTE=inudesu;1494332]When we're getting left out of access bowls, that'll be the time to start worrying about our scheduling. I think we're ok for the moment.

Seriously!?!? :shocked2: ... I can't believe I just read that. This is like saying "We will put sprinklers in the building after it has already burned down."
Our schedule is already light years ahead of Marshalls. Where they were playing MAC teams we are playing K-State and Mississippi St. The vast majority of schools play FCS teams. I guarantee if we don't make it to an access bowl it won't be because of our schedule.
And we wanted to be in a good regional conference because of Increased Revenue, More Bowl Tie Ins, More TV Exposure, A Chance At Building Rivalries (Ex. Southern Miss) all while having lower travel costs. Not playing FCS teams anymore had nothing to do with that. They have nothing to do with each other. Hell every team in the SEC does it and they are in the ultimate regional conference.
