Say what you will, but I really admire Old Dominion's athletic leadership. They are doing it right. From football and men's basketball scheduling, to the expansion of their athletic facilities, to simply building a solid FBS football program out of an FCS program faster then anyone I've ever seen....they are doing it right.

I've read in the past that Battle 4 Atlantis is a C-USA owned tournament, similar to the Bahamas Bowl, but I think they just have a working relationship. According to Wiki, it's owned by a Kerzner International (who owns Resorts like Atlantis).
A C-USA team has been in it every year
2011 UCF
2012 Memphis
2013 UTEP
2014 UAB
2015 Charlotte
2016 ODU
C-USA is the only non-"Power" conference/team (Wichita State/Gonzaga/Butler) to play the event.

And of course, another year announced and another year that Tech is not playing in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
This time an institution invited to C-USA a year after Tech... a basketball program that has finished 4th and 8th in its only 2 years in C-USA... is the team selected to participate in the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis.
2013 UTEP
2014 UAB
2015 Charlotte
2016 Old Dominion
2017 WKU
@JonRothstein
Arizona, Villanova, Purdue, NC State, SMU, Tennessee, W. Kentucky, and N. Iowa are in the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis, sources told @CBSSports.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
I project WKU will be a top 4 C-USA team in 2016-2017 and even better in 2017-2018 when they play in the Battle for Atlantis. I've got several reasons to think this. Here's one recruit who will make a difference for the Hilltoppers if he shows up for the 2017 season - http://espn.go.com/recruiting/basket...stern-kentucky

WKU may be pretty good in a couple years, but it's ridiculous they were selected to play in Battle 4 Atlantis before Tech while we'll probably be headlining the SWAC-MEAC Challenge.

Agreed. We are not getting much respect from our own conference in selection for the Bermuda tournament.
We could be a contender for the championship this season. A major factor is how UAB responds to their new coach. Even with a new coach, they will be the pre-season favorites.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
Looks like Rick Stansbury was a great hire for WKU.
Watch out for Rice, also, with Mike Rhoades. They may have the best incoming class in the cusa this year if you include Chad Lott who red-shirted last year ??

Chad Lott? You talking about the guard from Byrd that turned down Tech cause he thought he was big time and ended up at Rice? The kid that is 6'3" but cant shoot and is coming off an ACL injury? If that's part of Rice's best class in CUSA, then that class is mediocre. He is a decent player, but in no way a game changer. He wouldn't see the floor at Tech.

Good lord. When will we learn?
Why does our damn mens basketball program continue making the same scheduling mistakes over and over and over again?

I'm afraid the worst is yet to come scheduling-wise. A few months ago I was told about a "mid-minor" tournament that we supposedly agreed to participate in, but I haven't been able to confirm it with anybody affiliated with Tech. If it comes to fruition, it'd be a major step backwards for our basketball program and University. Hopefully, it wasn't finalized, and we decided to decline.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
I don't know if it is the same tournament; however, I know we were working on some kind of event at the Century Tel Center in December. Sunbelt Team vs. Southland Team already committed. They were still looking for an opponent for Tech. Not sure if will still happen. Not a tournament, but rather single games.

That's it. Hopefully your story is more up-to-date than mine, and hopefully the situation has changed. At the end of April, I was told by someone involved that Louisiana Tech, Northeast La. JUCO, Northwestern St. JUCO, and Grambling St. JUCO were going to play in a basketball tournament at the CenturyLink Center this year. I was embarrassed that we would stoop so low to agree to it. I live 15 minutes down the road, and you couldn't pay me to watch us compete against those low-minors on a neutral court. I'm all for playing in Shreveport-Bossier but against respected universities, not local low-minors. Maybe my version was what they were shooting for, but your version is what's going to happen and we find a decent opponent or we don't participate at all. Like I said before, I haven't been able to confirm it, and I haven't seen any leaks.

@LATechHoops Releases 2015-16 Schedule
Program record 17 regular season home games
Sept. 16, 2015
RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech head coach Eric Konkol announced today the 2015-16 Bulldog Basketball schedule which features 17 home games, the most that will ever be played inside the Thomas Assembly Center.

Tech isn't even the headliner. How embarrassing. :o
Attn: Coach Konkol -- Tech fans in Shreveport have no interest in watching us play Grambling. We need to pull out of this event immediately.
If the SBSC wants Tech to play in Bossier, then they need to put up the money to bring in a quality opponent. If not, then no deal.
But don't believe for one second that Grambling was first contacted Thursday. Sixteen weeks ago I was told Tech, NLULM, NWST, and Grambling would play in this event.

Congrats to the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission for putting together what must be the most Butt Ugly six-team event ever in college basketball.
Based on 2015-2016 performance,
Centenary (Div. III, record 16-11) vs. Millsaps (Div. III, record 5-21)
ULM (RPI 104, record 20-14) vs. NSU (RPI 344, record 8-20)
LA Tech (RPI 129, record 23-10) vs. Grambling (RPI 350, record 7-24)

The SBSC finally gets a hotel tax passed after failing miserably the first time. What does the SBSC do with the tax dollars?
First, hire a new employee... Of course!
Second, bid to host the Belch hoops tourney (and fail to land it).
Third, bring in an NBA preseason game (Mavericks vs. Pelicans) at the same time as the Tech vs. UTEP football game in Ruston.
Fourth, attempt to schedule the most "butt ugly" college basketball showcase of all-time.
Oh yeah, and bring in a hot air balloon race, tae kwon do event, fishing tournament, and drag racing event. Woo hoo!
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
We need to refuse to play in this piss-poor attempt at a game.
Better yet, the conference needs to forbid us to put this on the schedule, similar to what was discussed during the Media Days.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
Just another excuse for Shreveport fans to not show up.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
I attended a similar thing years ago at Hirsh:
Centenary vs. Alaska-Anchorage
Tulane vs. Notre Dame.
That was the promised return to Louisiana to appease Mansfield recruit.....chit! Can't remember his name. Digger Phelps brought his ranked Irish team to S'port. Orlando Woolridge? Is that it?
That Tulane team had two future NBAers on it, and they were pretty good. But the Irish smoked 'em in the 2nd half to win 76-56.
I support such events, in general. But, come on man! gotta have some quality teams there.

I don't remember the sport, maybe baseball, but the last time something like this happened, it was because one of the other universities had posted their schedule prematurely.

This smells like a politically stupid move by our AD instead of a stupid move by our MBB coach.

This is beyond hold your nose. This is absolutely, 100% unacceptable. In no world or circumstance is this ok. Only in the twisted mind of our AD (and perhaps our HC) for allowing this abomination to even be discussed.

This was immediately my first thought when the story broke. I know he's been "active" over here with sports politicos. While mending S-BC relations was good after our screwing by the bowl, political rear smooching has its limits. Tech is soaring academically, winning in the arena, attendance keeps leaping, even without the S-BC sports powers that be. It's in THEIR interest to court us too. We're doing pretty darn good in spite of THEM.
The game vs Grambling is not on the sports commission website calendar yet. Maybe there's hope this fiasco can yet be fixed with something in our interest, for a change. Grumbling about Grambling? You betcha.

3 non-DI opponents
Southern Arkansas
Oklahoma Baptist
LSU-Shreveport

Alabama State
Maryland-Eastern Shore
Alcorn State
Prairie View A&M

The only name on that list that your casual observer will recognize is FGCU, and then only if they remember all the way back when to 2013? 2012? I can't remember, thats for sure.

Got our season tickets renewed. It is what it is, but IT IS BULLDOG BASKETBALL IN THE TAC. So ready to see our returning and newcoming Dawgs.

Of course! But it's difficult to imagine choosing a worse schedule.

100% agree. Think how pitiful our rpi and sos are going to be. Gotta be dead last in CUSA, just really awful. Almost makes a fan sick, really. Our program will never grow like this. If we see this yet again next year... But still looking forward to this year even though this does cut into longer term enthusiasm.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
My biggest complaint is that almost none of the Home marquee match-ups are on Saturday. I won't be able to make the weekday games...
This happens EVERY year.
Marshall and Southern Miss are on Saturday. It's really difficult to justify being out-of-state and buying season tickets for TWO games that I care about.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
I know a lot of us are joking and making comments, but this is a horrible schedule. I'm not sure I want to renew my season tickets. I'm supporting the program with my money and time, and this is the slate of games we're bringing into the TAC? This is awful. Not only is this awful - this schedule will be a huge obstacle in any postseason consideration. This is a step back. With football - we've pointed to 2017 as being the year we have a good schedule...finally...now when will bball follow?
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
The schedule is worse than bad, it's insulting.
They look at our faithful season ticket holders and say "they'll buy a ticket out of loyalty no matter what, so lets find the worst schedule we possibly can."
I have trouble believing this is even an accident. This much of a FUBAR has to be on purpose. You can't screw things up this badly without trying.
If I get some time later I'll get the Sagarin numbers (from last year) for our schedule.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
That's why I always say I have NO problem playing the regional schools in home/home in basketball & baseball -
Their rpi might be bad but for the most part they are usually between 175-200 sans Grambling of course
Then have 2 or 3 good rpi A5 schools and if the conference mates schedule like wise our SOS can slip into 150 range with a little luck
RPI takes care of itself IF you win for the most part
And I will make one more statement - I don't mind playing GSU - as long as its in Ruston
Very disappointed in this schedule - I don't blame Konkol for the Bossier thing - BUT he could of got us some better games as part of home and homes -
It makes me wonder how much tmac is tinkering because I have had discussions with him and KNOW where he wants to take the OOC schedule and this ain't it
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
Is there any doubt our AD made the call on Grambling in Bossier? How can any McClelland fan defend that move?
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
What are the rules for playing lower level schools? I see 2 NAIA games: LSUS & OK Baptist. Can we not play Centenary (NCAA DIII)?

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
With that said -
Wichita State is NOT signing a home and home with us
Tulsa and SMU are NOT signing a home and home with us
Gonzaga and St Marys are NOT signing a home and home with us
But...
We can get home and homes with UALR, SFA, Ga State, SLU, UTA, ORU and others
Throw in one more regional A5 school for money and then buy a McNeese, NWSt, Lamar etal

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
* Using 2015-16 Sagarin Ratings
Conference:
Poor as always, but we can't help that. The average of our conference games this year is about 212.
Out of Conference:
As discussed, horribly insulting. Two of the teams on our schedule are not even D1 (I'm being extremely generous and leaving out Southern Arkansas, which is our exhibition). Those teams are not ranked by Sagarin, but to give a representation I have assigned them a ranking of one place lower than the last team (#351 Florida A&M). I don't think I should have mentioned FA&M as I'm sure TMac will schedule a round-robin with them soon now. This gives a total average of 238. Somehow, some inconceivable way, we actually managed to get an OOC schedule that was weaker than our conference slate. But let's break it down some more.
OOC Road:
Overall, actually not bad at all. Once again however, I am being more generous than *whoever* signed this schedule deserves and not counting the atrocity with Grambling as a road game. California checks in at #30, and South Carolina and Nebraska are both well above #100. Even ULLL is only #120. This gives us an average, for the 4 games, of 72. This is good, better than this is probably not realistically possible, but this is the target for total OOC schedule. As we've discussed in detail many times, we need to be targeting top-150 RPI teams, and landing an average (in any ranking system) of about 75 is a good compromise.
OOC Home:
Words fail me to describe this travesty. The average here is 301, saved only by #128 FCGU. Without "Dunk City," this average is 323!!! There are only 351 teams in D1!
Poorly putting this into perspective, if our season were 3 games long (OOC Home, OOC Road, Conference), this is who we'd play (with their 2015-16 records):- #72 Princeton Tigers 21-7 (OOC Road)
- #301 St. Francis Pennsylvania Red Flash 12-17 (OOC Home)
- #212 St. Louis Billikens 11-21 (Conference; ok, the analogy is not perfect, better would be #214 UTEP 18-14)
And we wonder why we're not taken seriously for tournament seeding.
-
Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
Our exhibition every year should be Centenary - They are playing ULM this year.
We've go to find better "tournaments" to play in.
2015-16 - Ohio State, Memphis, UTA, Grambling - not awful
2014-15 - Temple, Morehead State, Presbyterian, @ American
2013-14 @ Gulf Coast Showcase
2012-13 @ Chattanooga - w/ "Play-in" game at aTm
2011-12 @ Wyoming Tourney
2010-11 @ UC-Irvine w/ Play-in game at Texas
Meanwhile some our conference mates are playing (on neutral courts)
UTEP: Wake Forest, with Villanova potentially in 2nd game
UAB: Kansas, George Washington or Georgia
ODU: Louisville, LSU or Wichita State, Michigan State/St Johns/Baylor/VCU
WKU: Washington; TCU or UNLV
I'd rather have home/home with NSU/ULM than all of the SWAC/MEAC/NAIA games. I have to drive from Shreveport for these games. Hopefully in the future, since we are still going to schedule these games, maybe we can coordinate it with football where there's a basketball game at noon with the Dawgs @ 6. 1 ticket for both games.

None of this happens overnight. Scheduling for success is a two-way street. Gonzaga won't sign it for the same reason we don't play a bunch of SWAC schools - it really hurts the rest of their schedule (of course, their schedule can handle more of a beating RPI-wise than ours). You and others have outlined very good plans for scheduling to build RPI over the next few seasons, and eventually we will end up in a position where a school people want to come see will come to Ruston.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
I'm not a pie in the sky guy - I tend to be very realistic in my expectations
WE cannot let our biases effect our OOC scheduling where basketball/baseball are concerned - if we are better than them we will beat them (and the vast majority of the time we do)
With the decrease in conference revenues via football tv contracts we have to double down on basketball and baseball - basketball can pay big dividends and baseball can be a loss leader with the proper planning
We may can get a A-5 team to come to Bossier every now and then for recruiting purposes (but with the academic troubles S'port/Bossier players have had in the last few years that is not as likely as it was a few years ago)
We have to VALUE basketball and baseball MORE THAN EVER BEFORE now

Will somebody please explain to me why Konkol just got a one year contract extension ??

I doubt Fox will be around long. He was giving a sales pitch when hired, but was not given what he was promised to work with. Nobody can put a schedule together with the limits our AD places...then he makes our team travel to Bosser to play Grambling on the day/night of 3 C-USA bowl games.

Hey! Our crew worked TIRELESSLY to land Wednesday night games against Alabama State and Oklahoma Baptist. Count yourself blessed that you might be among the lucky few to witness those teams stoop to play in Ruston. On Wednesday.

What kind of limits? I'm legitimately interested. SWAC teams only?

I have got to believe there was some outside influence - because other regional teams WANT to play us to help improve their rpi and sos also -

That is not true. They would have done a WAY better job. They would have cared about who we played and known no one wanted to watch against crappy little teams. They will struggle to even get people to drive to Bossier City to watch those match-ups. I live here and can't see wasting the time or the money.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
The Nebraska game will be on ESPN3 which makes sense. TV would want a set game time for an early season game.

Clever turn of words, "WAY better." While I can get by ok this year, I see this schedule as a setback for the program that stalls momentum and enthusiasm. Won't be hard to get out of the parking lot after a game. Looking ahead this is scary if repeated. And I'm an incurable optimist.

I think T-Mac has made a huge mistake. IMO, this kind of scheduling could really hurt our recruiting. If that happens, I'll volunteer to drove T-Mac's moving van out of town. Some of us have been doing this too long to put up with this nonsense.

They better be closer than on the horizon because the junk schedule they put together this year is doing nothing but holding the program back.
No recruit in the country gives a crap about us beating the doors off Oklahoma Baptist, LSUS, or Catholic Nun University at home. God forbid if someone gets hurt in one of those games. Does the school for the blind have a basketball team? Maybe T-Mac can bring them to the TAC for a nice sum of money.

After the classless stunt NWST MBB pulled last year going to the local media to try to force Tech into scheduling them (and considering they are in the Southland), Tech should NEVER play a basketball game in Natchitoches again. The best scheduling decision Konkol has made is not scheduling a H&H with NWST. Kudos to him for that. We should schedule a money game on the road and then use that money to buy NWST to play in Ruston.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Thread
Sagarin has 2015-16 Northwestern State at 323. They went 5-19, right? Looking at that, they're not much good for us beyond a cheap home game, which we have plenty of. At least as far as the numbers go. There are more arguments beyond that (pro and con), of course.
