Tech released a statement at 4 p.m. Fox just reported it on his show.
He took full responsibility and indicated it was for an "inappropriate relationship".
He also asked for privacy.
Sad deal for all!
Indicated he was "profoundly disappointed in myself"
Official statement regarding resignation of Tyler Summitt
RUSTON, La. – The following are official statements regarding the resignation of Tyler Summitt as head coach of Louisiana Tech University’s women’s basketball program.
From Louisiana Tech University:
“Effective immediately and for personal reasons, Tyler Summitt has stepped down as head coach of Louisiana Tech University’s women’s basketball program. The university has accepted his resignation and appreciates the contributions he has made to the growth and success of the Lady Techsters program during his tenure. Louisiana Tech will immediately begin the process of selecting a new head coach to lead the women’s basketball program and student-athletes forward. Louisiana Tech wishes Tyler and his family the best of luck in the future.”
From Tyler Summitt:
“It is with great regret that I resign from my position as head coach of the women’s basketball program at Louisiana Tech University. I am profoundly disappointed in myself for engaging in a relationship that has negatively affected the people I love, respect and care about the most. My hope, plans and prayers are to repair those relationships. I am appreciative of the opportunity I was given to coach at Louisiana Tech. I am heartbroken that my time has ended in Ruston, but because of my respect for the institution, it is best that I resign. I am hopeful the media and the public will respect the privacy of my family and me as we deal with this difficult situation I have caused.”
Unfortunately I doubt his request for privacy will be honored.
Sad, and almost unfair, ending
What a crock of crap that squeaky clean image has been. Just as slimy as any other person.
It's sad because he is so young and hasn't established his career as a winning head coach yet. I wonder if this is the end of head coaching for him.
Sad for all involved, especially his wife.
Was it ever confirmed if it was a player or not?
That's what I've heard
So moving on.
My first pick would be the coaches in Nachitoches
I hate this for all involved, but I'm thankful they don't have children that would be dragged through this mess. This is stuff that's so easily avoidable...
Good riddance. Now get us someone who can actually coach.
And I'm sure there were plenty of, "... Prayers for everyone involved." and lots of, "... So sad for their families." when the rumors came out.
I feel for the families too, but it just pisses me off when those who preach about values and character are the ones who get caught doing this kind of stuff.
Tyler Vitter
Thats a little much for the general board imoand im not sure it confirmed 100% accurate.
Whoever it is the name should be protected
Never dip your dink in the company ink.
Mods, is there any way to get a ban on people posting who are new/red dots?
Too many guests in the forum to have trolls posting bad unsubstatiated rumors.
Too late. People are already commenting about who the player is on ESPN nationals Facebook article.
I feel terrible for his wife and Pat. They're such good people who don't deserve this bad publicity on their name.
I was a huge Tyler supporter before today. His selfish and absolutely stupid actions is causing the wrong kind of publicity for our program. Good riddance.
Wow, just got a call about this! Very disappointed with Tyler, and more disappointed about what it has done for the current Techsters team and for our University!
Some "NEW Culture" he always stated about bringing to the program!
Time to move on!
How often is the AD not quoted in a press release pertaining to a head coach issue?
Why? Aren't they both ADULTS? I mean....we're not talking about Summit preying on high school kids here. We're talking about 2 consenting ADULTS. They both knew better.
While it's true that this kind of stuff can happen anywhere to a coach of any age, I think it's fair to say the chances of something like this happening increase exponentially when you hire a 24-year old male to coach 18-23 yr old college girls. Summit had huge authority over girls practically his own age. That's begging for trouble. Hiring Summit was a bad idea to begin with, because he was far too young to assume that much authority and responsibility. Now Louisiana Tech has probably put the university in a legal pickle by hiring him.
the whole staff needs to go....they all knew
every player should be given a release if they want it
NY is nice this time of year. Or close by anyway
So many thoughts, so many feelings, but mostly sad. And thinking back to when I was that age, there but by the grace of God go I.
Exactly. There's no way I could have been put in a position of authority over girls my own age when I was 24 yrs old and not found some trouble. And that's probably true for almost everyone on this board. Like I said in the another post, this was a really bad idea from the start. Hiring managers for the university should know better. They put the university at risk with this foolish hire.
Yep - there are those peeing on themselves they are so excited. I think that is the most disappointing part though- he did set himself up to be something different. I hope he will become the man he has presented himself to be in public. He certainly left TECH in a bind by his poor choices though!
Whoever made the comment that Spoon did the same and never got caught is ignorant..There was NEVER that rumor.. and if there was, that couldn't be Farther from the truth.ask ANY of Spoon's players. Why don't you TRY to find the truth before you spread such horrible lies.
I dont care one way or the other. However when someone's first post is like yours and your only topic goal is to attack and offer no proof, then I will amke fun of you. I don't care if Spoon is gay, more power to her, I don't care if she banged everything that moved the entire time at Tech, this nor Tyler affects my life in the least.
You on the other hand are easy to incite and I am bored.
Who did I attack? Nobody. And Yes this was my first post thank you for noticing. My goal was never to attack anyone and Im sorry but, I dont owe anyone any PROOF just as nobody has PROOF otherwise. I simply stated that people should not throw out slanderous accusations, its ridiculous.
whatever, enjoy your time here. Because if you are here posting on anything other than defense of spoon in 6 months its will be a special time for us all.
Any press is good press
It's all over Facebook. Man this is really, really bad.
this is terrible for Summitt's wife, children, family, the players on the team, and any fans left of Lady Techster basketball...in that order. I feel zero sympathy for him. ZERO. he broke THE main rule and he knows it. there is no circumstance to explain this away. shame on him. hope he saves his marriage (if that's what his wife wants) and all that jazz, but good riddance.
Whether it was a one night stand or an on-going relationship really doesn't matter in the long run as far as him being the coach of the Lady Techsters, but I have been thinking how difficult it would be to pull off an on-going relationship like that in Ruston, especially with him being as recognizable as he is not only in Ruston, but probably many places the team would have traveled. The lies, the deception, the fear of getting caught, knowing the severe consequences. But he still gave in to temptation. As some have mentioned, the fact he held himself out to be a fine Christian man is probably one of the most disheartening aspects of the whole thing.
While I may not be popular at times but this does not mean he is not a christian. All sin...he messed up....should be fired...should be forgiven...but not in coaching
McClelland should be fired. He needs to go
Is it true that she followed him from Marquette?
Looking at it it's gotta be the Marquette chick. That looks really fishy when you think of him recruiting her to tech. Let's put a coffin in the program, allocate the money to football
Did i miss them, but where are champ's flood of positive posts on the matter? Surely he can find something good to say to lift us out of this situation.
From today's presser
Tommy McClelland: April Fools!
McClelland seriously called a press conference to announce our Associate Head Coach is now our Interim Head Coach but currently out of the country, then tells us he doesn't know what he's looking for in the next coach, and then cries.
What was the point of that press conference? All we learned is Mickie is on vacation.
Yeah. He kinda rambled for about 10 minutes, said allegations were brought to his attention then Tyler decided to resign prior to the conclusion of the internal investigation, then named Mickie interim coach but she won't be back in USA until Sunday, said the players could talk to counselors, said it was a positive for Mike White to leave, doesn't know what he's looking for in next coach & hasn't started process to find a replacement, and then started crying when asked about community response. That was pretty much it.
Louisiana Tech ADM, TMac and the Ruston community, Tech Family in general, have all handled this very professionally. And it is not any of their fault this happened.
I'm going to sound like Dr. Phil here, but assuming the player is the one many folks are saying, reading an article about the player on www.latechsports.com sent up numerous red flags as it talked about how much 1 on 1 time the two spent together. If there is any kind of chemistry between two people with common interests, they can find themselves in an "emotional affair" (cue Dr. Phil) before they even realize what is happening. Many times an emotional affair turns into a physical affair. See, all that time and money I spent on marriage counseling did do some good. The end result is the same, but I think things probably started out innocently enough, but then the attraction was just too strong and steps were not taken to back away and resist the temptation. If it shook out that way, it was not a matter of Tyler preying on some innocent female, but a relationship that spun out of control. Unfortunately that type of thing seems to happen with many people who are religious. They feel they are strong enough to resist straying physically but don't take steps to keep from falling into an "emotional affair" which unfortunately ends up badly. I have no way of knowing what really happened, but I have seen and lived through things like I just described. I am probably one of the lucky ones, my marriage did survive, but it was on life support at times.
He is still listed as the head coach on the website.
