Louisiana Tech University President Dan Reneau will sit on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission of Colleges.
Reneau will serve from January 2003 until December 2005. The 77-member commission is charged with making decisions about the accreditation of institutions of higher education in the 11 states overseen by SACS, reviewing proposed changes in criteria for membership in the Decatur, Ga.-based association and recommending policy changes.
"I'm looking forward to serving in that capacity," Reneau said in a telephone interview Wednesday afternoon.
Reneau was in San Antonio for the winter meeting of SACS, which he attends each year. He said he was nominated in Louisiana, but his name went to a committee at SACS, which approved his nomination and sent it to the full body.
SACS made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
Reneau said he believed he was the first Louisiana Tech president to sit on the commission and the first in a long time from the University of Louisiana System. The ULS oversees eight universities in the state, including Louisiana Tech, Grambling State University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
