I don't get the idea he's trying to protect Elliot. I mean, if anything, he's trying to protect J'mar. It would have been far less pressure to perform in the 4th quarter of the game last weekend in terms of making a difference. Giving him crumbs against Rice or Western Kentucky won't matter and might not even be appropriate. It's weird to me. What did he have to lose?

Thanks 77! Man, how time sure dulls the memory!
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
If you see another QB at all, it will be in garbage time. Given some of Holtz statements, I don’t expect it. The real question is this, can our offense generate enough points to have a comfortable lead in the 4th quarter? With the way we’ve played at home and how weak our offense has been this year, that’s in doubt. I believe we lose one of the last 3 games, maybe two.

It's probably not ideal in most cases for a young QB to be thrown into their first real playing time against a top caliber defense who already smells blood. I could see an argument that putting him out there and getting him killed might just mess up his confidence. I'm not sure I totally buy that, or necessarily think that's what was happening here. But that's a potential argument for protecting Elliot by not playing him against MSU.
Obviously, you'd have the other side of this which would be the argument for a baptism by fire, but it's theoretically possible that this was the reasoning.

I respectfully cry BALDERDASH on this one (I'll give you a little time to Google that one). I subscribe to the idea that it is the ideal situation to see how he will react in combat. MSU had pulled lots of their defensive starters, so that kinda balanced out the situation. I say the other side you mentioned....baptism by fire...would help him more than frighten him. If it does scare him, he needs to reconsider playing in D1.

I agree, if MSU has made substitutions essentially calling off the dogs, then we should do the same. We should beat Rice and WKU with or without a sub at QB. J’Mar still had no success against second stringers. If our backup had success against them, that would really bean indictment against our coach(es).

I'm not arguing for or against doing this, I'm just pointing out that it could have been a philosophical decision (based on protecting Elliot as suggested by PawDawg above).

The circumstances of the Miss State were appropriate to play the backup. Odds are at least 2 of our last 3 games will not be as appropriate. In fact, I suppose we will be more effective on offense for the next 3 games. Do you think he intends to play Elliot in the next 4 games regardless of how effective we are on offense?
I think a QB change is a possibility whether Skip wants one or not. If he plays Elliot in the next few weeks and the O runs more efficiently, He'll have to start him. Like you, I don't buy that Skip is just too bull headed to try a guy he knows is better because he called J'Mar a rockstar 2 years ago. I think you could certainly see him in the next few weeks if the O sputters.
Now, the only way he loses his shirt is if UAB tanks in the next 3 weeks and we play in the CG...not very likely.

More like UAB is a division of tanks, rolling over the opposition. Like an SS Panzer Division of King Tigers during the battles in Hungary, literally crushing the Russians and their eastern European allies under their tracks. Anyway...you get the too graphic picture.
UAB losing, ain't happening.
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Just think about what COULD HAVE BEEN.... Once the game was out of hand, if Skip had done the RIGHT THING and let another QB take some snaps, and just answer the damn question after the game with "We'll get both QB's some snaps in practice this week and play the QB that gives us the best chance to win against Rice" Coach answer bullshit, this board would have been happier, the TEAM would be happier, J'MAR could actually feel the heat and step his game up.
Unfortunately.... we have this. The Smith's have to have naked beach photo's with a mistress or something...
I can't load up 4 girls again to come watch this shit tomorrow. MAYBE wife would let me go by myself, but we'll see.
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Pissed me off even more to think that we lost to UAB at home this week. This tells me how bad of a coach that Holtz is.

Given the opponent, yes the lead should be big enough.
