We can't start Nate Game 1. We will likely need a win over USM to get an at-large bid. Gotta hope to win Game 1 and save Nate for USM. That may be our only chance now.

I'm in 100% agreement.

Who starts game 1? Sutton and Linck have been unreliable at best.

Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
Nate in game 1. Losing game one is too difficult to overcome. Never save a pitcher for the unknown.

I understand your point, but anyone else against Southern Miss is almost a certain loss. With our pitching staff it's gonna take a miracle of Biblical proportions just to make the finals no matter who we play so I guess it really doesn't matter.

I'm thinking two wins not winning the tournament. Win with Nate on Wednesday and we may have him again for Saturday. I realize there are a lot of people who think it is over unless we win the tournament, but that's emotion not historical logic.

I wouldn't say using a pitcher in Game 2 instead of Game 1 in a double elimination tournament is saving him for the unknown.
Our resume really could use a Top 25/50 win right now, and beating USM in Game 2 may be our only chance to get it. A Nate win vs. USM may be enough to get us an at-large bid.
If we lose Game 1, then Nate is starting the most important game of the season for us the next day in an elimination game.
As you know, I wanted to save Nate for Game 2 before this loss anyway.

Definitely a lot of emotion  I can't see how losing the last series of the year to Middle Finger is going to get us off the bubble. That's a very bad series loss. I feel like we have to win 3 games to have a shot now.

You assume we would face USM in game 2. That's an unknown.
He is our best, but he is not a guarantee W.

Even if we had won the series there was not a guarantee of getting an at large. From an RPI stand point we are going to be about where we were last year going into the tournament as the #5 seed. We are lacking a few quality wins that we had last year and the hot streak we were on after sweeping Rice. IMO losing the Middle series will not sour the committee on us unless we go 1-2 in Biloxi.'
I'm sick about the two losses, but more sick about the sloppy play of our offense than what our pitchers did. All those strikeouts...I'll be hearing "swiiiiing and a miss" in my sleep.

Regardless of the result of the 1st game, our Game 2 will be the most important game of the year whether it's against USM or UTSA. It'll either be a must-win game for our resume or a must-win game to stay alive in the tourney. I want Nate to have the ball in Game 2.

Funny! As you know I don't get fired up over leaving runners stranded, but we had way too many strikeouts today and Thursday. Put the ball in play! We also made some base running mistakes that hurt.
I honest feel like our pitching was good enough on Friday. Our best relievers all struggled today. I think they'll be okay...they gotta be.

Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
It doesn't matter can't win a tourney with one pitcher. It's important we get in winners side by winning game 1. Regardless who pitches we will need to score lots of runs. I would pitch Nate Wednesday to give us best chance to win game 1 then come back with Miller game 2. At this point we win we keep playing if not we go home. We still can control our destiny - so let's just hope our pitchers compete & our hitters get hot. Anything can happen in a tournament.

We can't win the auto bid with one pitcher, but I think one win over USM may be enough to earn us an at-large bid.
I like our chances with Nate on the bump vs. USM a lot better than winning the whole tourney with Nate pitching vs. UNCC.

We don't have to win the whole tournament. You reacting to your emotions again. The team you are upset with can't win another game.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
I hope Coach is coaching to win the tournament.
I'd start Nate in Game 1. If we are still around Saturday and are playing an elimination game - start him. If we are playing Sunday and played the minimum number of games (3) - Start him!
If we start him Wednesday - then hopefully we get a win in game 1, then have him available for relief duty if we get in a bind.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
If we're coaching by committee I vote Nate game 1. After we win we'll think about what to do in game 2.

No. What are you talking about? I never said we needed to win the whole tourney. You aren't listening.
My whole point has been we likely just need a win against USM to get an at-large bid. Hence, my main reason to save Nate for Game 2.
If we can't beat USM, then we are likely sitting at home.

We have to beat USM either way.
And Nate is the only pitcher I have any confidence in getting the job done.
Thus, saving Nate for Game 2 also gives us the best chance to win the tournament, too.
Going conservative pitching Nate in G1 is a formula for sitting at home.

Yeah, the problem is that we have to actually beat Charlotte to play USM. Games not started by Nate have always been a 50/50 proposition in my mind.
But anyway, for winning the tournament I actually like pitching Nate in Game 2. In double elimination format, losing in round 1 or 2 of the winner's bracket doesn't matter, still have to play the same number of games (I'd argue losing the second game is the tougher road). For getting an at-large, I think pitching Nate Game 1 is the right move. Winning Game 1 will put us on the right side of the bubble come committee time. Our rpi would be so much better than fau's (barring fau winning the tourney) that the committee would favor us. That being said if rice wins the tourney, we may be in trouble with them stealing a cusa bid.
Gonna be an interesting 5 days in Biloxi. I'm gonna try to go to all the games. Go dawgs!

Nate hasn't started Game 1 of a series all season. And it's a double-elimination tournament. Tech is guaranteed at least 2 games with Nate pitching 1 game regardless of the outcome of the first. Game 2 will be our most important game of the season regardless of the outcome of the first. I want Nate pitching our most important game of the season. And I want a fresh Nate, as sharp as possible. Burning Nate in Game 1 would be foolish IMO.

You gotta go with your ace. You have to think of it as a best of 3 series. There's no guarantee's in baseball, so you gotta go with your best pitcher in game one. Win game one and worry about game 2 later.

'06 how much would our rpi go up with a W over USM? How much would it go up with an L against them?

I agree. We are guaranteed 2 games. If we win game 1, Nate gives us the best chance to beat USM in game 2. If we lose game 1, we need Nate throwing our elimination game.
If this was a one and done, then Nate would be the obvious choice for game 1. We will no doubt play 2 games...

It's not all about RPI. It's about our resume that is seriously lacking NCAA Tournament quality wins and lists getting swept at home by USM.

So the committee will not look at RPI on Sunday? You think 2-2 with a loss to USM will have us in the low 30s?
I can see you have your mind made up that we MUST beat USM to get an at large. Based on emotion of course.:icon_razz:

There is a certain amount of subjectivity in the selection process. While we have some good early wins our conference resume is not going to impress enough to get selected. I think a strong showing in the tourney is a must to leave the committee with a "what have we done lately" good impression.
2-2 with a loss to USM just might not be good enough to get off the bubble. If we were not on the bubble then 2-2 would suffice but I think we need to leave no doubt.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
I really cannot understand how a non-conference RPI of 13 does not benefit us in these discussions.

It does -
Just win as many as possible regardless the opponent and it starts with the first game
Best way to insure a game against Southern is to win game 1
I like our chances against them in game 2

That's not what I said. RPI is obviously very important.
It's like you and DFM have your minds made up that an RPI in the 30s will get us an auto bid regardless of everything else because last year the committee gave all the host sites to 16 of the top 17 RPI teams.
If RPI was all that mattered, there wouldn't be a selection committee; the RPI computer would make the brackets instead. That's obviously not how it's done.
I listen to the D1Baseball podcast and Teddy Cahill from Baseball America most weeks for the last couple years. There are so many more factors that goes into at-large selection than simply RPI.
We are only 5-6 vs. RPI Top 50 teams. Our only marquee series win is over ODU, and they are barely clinging to the Top 50 right now at #45. We finished 5th place in our conference, a couple games behind last year's 5th place record. We have 2 bad series losses in conference play, one of which we ended the season on. We got swept at home in a conference series, and that is a giant red mark on our selection sheet. And C-USA is weaker this year compared to last. Of our big midweek wins this year, only 1 didn't turn into a split (Mississippi State). Our resume is nowhere near our resume from last year that got us a 3 seed, a resume that included a Top 32 RPI (31) that would've gotten us a 2 seed using your logic, double-digit Top 50 wins (10), a Top 25 sweep to finish C-USA play, and a midweek sweep over Top 25 ULL.
None of this is based on emotion. It's based solely on facts.

I have NEVER heard anybody ever mention OOC RPI when it comes to NCAA selection... until our coach did it this morning. :rolleyes4:
Non-conference SOS? Yes.
Non-conference RPI? No.

OOC RPI doesn't matter because it doesn't mean anything. It's irrelevant. It's never referenced.
Why is it listed? Probably to give the sheet balance because RPI, SOS, and OOC SOS are important.

Also, he could be available in the bullpen for an inning Friday or Saturday.

Exactly. Those 49ers already beat us twice, don't worry about what rpi playing USM gives us until we get past Charlotte.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
Wow. Our coach just said Charlotte has a bunch of lefties and switch hitters who hit better from the left. But we don't have any LHP so we are gonna go with Nate in G1. But Nate is wearing down, but we are gonna throw Nate on short rest anyway. :shocked2:

omething To Gain:Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs were the hottest team in the CUSA next to USM but then they stumbled against Middle Tennessee, dropping two of three to fall to fifth in the standings and ding their at-large hopes. Still Louisiana Tech, led by first-year head Lane Burroughs, enters the week at No. 38 in RPI, keeping it firmly in the mix for regionals. The Bulldogs will have the opportunity to shore up their resume in Biloxi and have the talent to do so. They boast the conference’s leading hitter in Raphael Gladu (.381, 63 runs, 54 RBIs) and had a team batting average of .307, second to Southern Miss. Senior lefthander Nate Harris is the team’s ace, going 9-0, 1.75 with 90 strikeouts and just 10 walks.

Meanwhile at the SEC tournament, Arkansas leads Florida 8-0. Would an Ark win help us any since we did beat them once?

Not sure how much it would help, but it wouldn't hurt.

Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
And a Shreveport kid hits a stand up double with bases loaded for USM to retake the lead. USM now leads 9-6 in the T8th.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
3 up, 3 down for Charlotte in B8.
We're headed to the 9th: Southern Miss 10, Niners 6
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
And the best team by far in C-USA will be in the championship game tomorrow.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
Charlotte made it interesting in the 9th. Final 10-8 USM.
-
Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
This entire C-USA tournament I don't recall seeing a single USM batter step out of the batter's box before a pitch. They just step up to the plate and put the ball in play.

Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
So I'm watching USM vs Rice and CBS SN swaps to a bull riding show???

Rain delay. USM up 2-0 in B4.
If the game can't be completed, the teams are declared co-champs and USM gets the auto-bid as the higher seed.

Re: 2017 Conference USA Baseball Tournament
Ok. It's in a rain delay. I swapped over to the 500 for a couple minutes and the rain started.

That home run was by a freshman for USM; his 19th home run of the season! They will be ridiculous next season too.

That freshman is USM's best player. Burdeaux wasn't the best player on his own team, much less the whole conference.

You figure a guy who hit .348 in 92 at bats is better than a guy who hit .355 in 282 at bats? Gimme some of those math skills.
BTW, did Goff recruit him?

You are looking at the wrong guy.
I'm talking about Wallner, who started 60 of their 61 games in CF or on the mound and crushed that HR to RCF that DogsWin was talking about.
Wallner had much greater OBP, SLG, and OBP (all of which are better metrics than AVG), and played a much more critical position defensively.
Wallner led the whole conference in OPS and was #2 in OBP and #2 in SLG.
Burdeaux wasn't even Top 10 in any of those metrics.
No clue about who Goff recruited.

Oh yeah, I forgot he was a pretty good pitcher, too. Just missed Top 10 in ERA. Let's see if he can save USM and send it to extras.

I didn't look to see who hit the HR. Must have been rigged by C-USA and Putin to favor a WM guy over a Shreveport guy.:icon_razz:

lol
But Wallner is from Minnesota and originally signed with North Dakota. He only ended up at USM because UND cut their baseball program and was later released to play anywhere. Somehow USM landed him. Now he's C-USA Freshman of the Year and should've been POY. Incredible story.

DW's love for the Shreveport kid and the Freshman got me crossed up. I never looked to see who actually hit the HR.

OK. I don't know if we recruited the Shreveport kid, but I do know his playing time would've been slim to none this year had he signed with Tech. Our catcher spot was already solidified.

Yeah, he probably didn't then. He had a commit out of the catcher from Tioga last year. He later "decommitted".

Where did that kid go?

I'll have to look it up, but I think he was considering following Goff to Bama. That may not be accurate.
I remember for sure that he needed some financial help and TOPS was not going to do much for him.
