SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
ESPN has SMU at a 67% chance of winning vs Louisiana Tech. Their offensive production vs the G5's toughest conference has been similar to ours last season. It will be a long 3 hours for our defense if our offense can't keep up. They run their offense at a very fast pace (Sonny Dykes fast), much quicker than what Tech saw this season.
Individual Stats:
QB Ben Hicks 3,442 pass yds for 32 TDs vs 9 INTs
WR Trey Quin 6'-0" 205, 1,191 yards and 12 TDs
WR Courtland Sutton 6'-4" 216, 1,017 yards and 12 TDs (expected to forgo his Sr season as a high NFL Draft pick)
WR James Proche 5-11 185, 816 yards and 6 TDs
RB Xavier Jones 5-10 205, 1,019 rushing and 9 TDs
SMU's National FBS Rankings:
Scoring Offense #8
Total Offense #13
Passing Offense #16
Pass Efficiency #27
Rush Offense #44
1st Dwn Offense #15
3rd Dwn Conv #30
4th Dwn Conv #9
4th Dwn Conv Defense #41
Red Zone Offense #41
Red Zone Defense #45

Skip will surprise us all and make D65 proud.
Re: SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
Watched a lot of smu this year. (My second alma mater)
They have a brilliant offense. Sonny Dykes is a good comparison. They are fun to watch. They call it pony up tempo for a reason.
That being said, their defense is really really bad. Sonny Dykes levels bad. Boston Scott should have a field day.
Playing smu is all about getting ahead and keeping your foot on the gas, because they will score and score quickly.
Re: SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
Please share their defensive statistics when you have a moment....I have a feeling where they're at with a fast paced offense like that (>100).
We've lived through that before.
Re: SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
That is the question Revf- Will Tech try to get ahead and keep our foot on the gas? Or will we yet again go conservative to try to 'keep the SMU offense off the field'. The latter will lead to a blowout loss. We absolutely must produce more offense in two weeks!
SMU's defense had to defend against #16 UCF, #21 Memphis, and other massively potent, fast-paced offenses. Our only common opponent (UNT) was crushed by 3 touchdowns by SMU. FAU is pretty similar to SMU.

I'd like to see George Scott moved to RB for this game since our RBs have had so many injuries this year. Boston Scott had a boot on today. Check out this video. http://www.hudl.com/profile/4163879/george-scott-iii At 6-1, 197, he's big enough to play RB and as the video shows, he's a very strong runner and you don't see anybody in the video that can catch him..

Yep.
To beat SMU you play offense the whole game, not ball control.
It worries me.
Re: SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
Foot on the pedal offense? Haven’t seen that all year. No reason to believe we find it over the next two weeks. Our best bet is to rush for about 250 & throw for about the same & control TOP
We can’t keep up with them otherwise.

4th and 3 on the SMU 30- Go for it, don't settle for an 'easy' FG. We will be scoring FGs while SMU is scoring TDs.

Don't run the same play over and over and over because we believe we must "simplify our offense for our players". We are simplifying the play for the opponent's defense!
If it is 4th and 6, that is a different story, but not playing fast and aggressively will kill our momentum and moral as it did many times this year. Play fast and our execution magically improves. You don't have to be Bear Bryant's grandson or Nick Saban to observe these things.

Need to wake the ghost of Colby Cameron. Can he come coach for 2 weeks?
Re: SMU's Offense Will be a Track Meet
I have a lot of issues with Skip as a coach but Bowl Preparation is certainly not one of them. He is a different breed of coach during bowl games. Illinois, Arkansas State and Navy were all fantastic wins in my book and I would bet SMU is going to get the same treatment. We will see a totally different team on Dec 20th.

Even some of Holtz's staunchest critics acknowledge he's shown a real talent for preparing a team for a bowl game.

Every year we go to a bowl game and every year a part of me is pissed that Skip didn't do something I saw in the game during the regular season. Its like the minute bowl season starts he flips a switch and turns into a totally different style of coach.
