There inventory is getting picked up by campus insiders
Yay, no more amateur tv deals please. Ubiquitous I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T please!!!!!
Yeah, thus would really hurt if our people has gone out and taken the opportunity to build a regional or even statewide network of stations that would air the available games.
Fox Sports? No thanks. If you remember Fox Sports did offer C-USA a strong financial package much better than what we signed for (many C-USA haters ignore this), but thankfully C-USA ADs said "No thanks." Fox Sports wanted our football games on either Tuesday nights, Wednesday nights, or Saturday mornings. That exposure ain't worth it. Those time slots are detrimental to our fan base and game day environment. Give me any obscure TV channel that allows us to play football on Saturday nights and broadcasts a lot of our basketball games. Yes, the MAC makes more TV money than C-USA now, but did you see their 2017 football schedules? The MAC doesn't play a single Saturday football game during the month of November. Let's not become the MAC of the South and sellout to ESPN.
Someone just posted this on the C-USA board. Not sure who to believe right now.
RE: The end of ASN?

From a former ESPN employee and Marshall alum..
While this story is being reported everywhere, it isn't exactly accurate.......
ASN isn't going off the air and it isn't disappearing, in fact, look for it to add up to 10 million homes rather quickly and add an OTT app.....
Sinclair is NOT putting it out of business or selling it, it is however about to take in a partner to manage the network.....I've been a consultant to ASN for two years and the management team has been the singular problem in the network being successful.....the operations will move, management team wil be gone and replaced by a new team that will be chosen by the managing partner, but Sinclair will still be the major or at least a major player in the Network.....this should be seen as a solid opportunity for the rights owners that currently have contracts with ASN....... while this may not be the best solution for ASN, it is a giant step in the right direction.
This and other articles are premature and mostly inaccurate (but have some facts correct)...... no deal is as yet final, but one should be finalized soon.

The people responsible have Cox in Ruston so they are probably fine with the current mess. Any pleas for them to help fans without Cox access are referred to Learfield. We've never had a Learfield connection that understands the process.

Some American Sports Network Updates
Caught this article this afternoon from the Charleston Gazette-Mail regarding the possibility of American Sports Network remaining a viable entity. Take a few minutes, read it & come back here.
I've spoken to a source with knowledge of the situation and they've provided the following, some of which matches what Doug Smock has reported:More to follow. Hopefully this week.
- American Sports Network, as its currently known & comprised, is indeed going away. A new entity will be replacing it. Could it have the Campus Insiders or 120 Sports name on it? I don't know. They may be involved in picking up existing ASN obligations.
- The West Palm Beach facility would be the master control for the new network, as I believe it was for ASN (ASN couldn't stream a few games this year due to weather issues at master control in WPB), with other staff located in other areas for marketing, sales, studio, etc. Currently, Campus Insiders runs its studio in Chicago.
- Since use of a master control facility involved, that appears to be a sign of a linear TV operation, with more emphasis towards online distribution than Sinclair had with ASN. This would line up with Doug's wording about "stronger, more diversified distribution"
- Nearly all the agreements Sinclair had for producing events will expire at the end of the current athletic year, except for Conference USA. This falls in line with at least one agreement:
@mattsarz FYI, Hockey East's deal with ASN was up after this yearI do not know if this new entity would seek previous ASN partners to bolster their lineup.

The number of our games they carried dropped off drastically from two years ago.
It was easy to see they were having management issues when they made the decision to sub lease Sun Belt games from ESPN but then missed the deadline in August for moving the start time of at least one game. Another game - Boise vs. UL-Lafayette - wasn't broadcast in Boise. Not good.
Campus Insider's relationship with Twitter is responsible for more than half of the Conference USA games that I watched. Same with MWC. Seems to me a pretty good way to get the games out there. I was actually thinking it would be cool if AAC did something like that for off-network games.
I'm much more concerned about access for our fans, not exposure to the general public. There's too much competition for the average Joe sports fan and not enough value. It's much more important for our fans to be able to watch our games on real TV.
And twitter has only streamed a fraction of Campus Insiders C-USA productions.
Anybody hearing anything more since this post a few weeks ago?

I'm not sure - are the OTA stations still up? I know there was one in Lafayette

This afternoon, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: SBGI), Silver Chalice and 120 Sports announced plans to combine forces as equity partners on a new multi-platform sports network, featuring a linear broadcast and comprehensive digital offerings.
Quote:
The network will be built through the merging of 120 Sports' live studio operations, Silver Chalice's Campus Insiders' live collegiate games and Sinclair's American Sports Network's (ASN) distribution and live collegiate games.
Quote:
The existing linear network operated by ASN will be rebranded and improved. The broadcast component of the new, unified network, upon its launch scheduled for later this year, immediately will reach millions of homes on Sinclair-owned multicast channels, both over-the-air and in turn through carriage by multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs).
Quote:
"With this incomparable set of strategic partners, we are evolving ASN into a vastly improved network with access to exclusive content and a combined linear and premium OTT offering that is the model for the future of television," said Chris Ripley, President and CEO of Sinclair.
Great news.
Yes, I'd love TV partners all around...just lagb. ;)
We/C-USA must solidify contact with Shreveport, Monroe/El Dorado, Alexandria TV markets (so many digital channels are available) for football and basketball, while at the same time targeting those markets for games played in Ruston. If folks can attend, they will attend. Yes online streaming is great. "Owning" a market is so important, too.
Hear hear
For those like me who had to google some terms:
Over-the-top content (OTT) is a term used in broadcasting and technology business reporting to refer to audio, video, and other media transmitted via the Internet without an operator of multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems (so-called multiple-system operators) controlling or distributing the content.

For the tweeters amongst us:
http://www.underdogdynasty.com/confe...-contract-cusa
I think a lot of that was fake news. I think the "moving from TV to twitter" storyline is bogus.
My understanding is that it is an ASN-CampusInsiders merger, meaning they'll leverage the assets of both (plus whatever 120 Sports is).
I think the reality is the 6 Campus Insiders games will also be televised on ASN's TV stations, and ASN's 15 TV games will also be streamed online. Produced and rebranded under one umbrella. And I doubt they produce any more games than ASN and CampusInsiders were previously contracted for.
I think this is good news that will improve access for some of the lower profile games, but I don't think this is any kind of revolution ditching TV for twitter streaming like that article suggests.
In addition to the CBSSN (6 games) and ESPN (6 games) games already selected, beIN Sports (10 games) and ESPN3 (10 games) still have to make their selections.
We also have to keep in mind C-USA has not issued a press release explaining exactly what will happen. We are speculating based on bits and pieces of info.
"Many believe C-USA suffers due to a lack of geographical rivals. Twitter could potentially be a bridge that helps bring together a conference full of fans that are largely splintered off due to geography. The above integration could go a long way in helping C-USA fans become more familiar with other fan bases within the conference. "
Who is this "many"?
Correct. Sinclair isn't giving up the over-the-air distribution network they've built. From the press release last month:
The existing linear network operated by ASN will be rebranded and improved. The broadcast component of the new, unified network, upon its launch scheduled for later this year, immediately will reach millions of homes on Sinclair-owned multicast channels, both over-the-air and in turn through carriage by multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs).
I agree with you regarding the 21 combined games being both televised and streamed. What I'm not sure about is additional games - both football and basketball.
I think it will depend on how many additional conferences besides CUSA the new entity will partner with before September. Do they even have management in place right now to work on those types of deals? Will any new deal with a conference be in place by September? Nobody really knows.
What I think is likely is that, at a minimum, they'll sublease content from ESPN. The SunBelt is a good place to start. Just like last season they can move Sun Belt games they sublease from ESPN into afternoon slots that CUSA schools aren't interested in.
UL-Lafayette has a home game against Southeastern on 9/2 and another against 9/23 against ULM. ASN has an affiliate in Lafayette and others around the state. I could see them subleasing those games and moving them to afternoon slots. ASN would have until early August to get that done. No contract with the conference needed.
Twitter has a new Roku Channel available. 120 Sports was on their - which I believe will become STADIUM

Sinclair Broadcast Group To Acquire Tribune Media Company For Approximately $3.9 Billion\
What does this have to do with Tech???
Sinclair is the owner of American Sports Network (ASN) that will soon become Stadium sports.
This adds Sinclair to several large markets they previously weren't in, including DALLAS and HOUSTON. This makes it more like to get the new Stadium channel OTA in these markets.

C-USA is undergoing a new round of negotiations for 2018, trying to recover from the collapse of rights fees in 2016. I’m hearing Sinclair wants out, which puts the whole ASN/Stadium thing in doubt, and beIN Sports wants out.The league could land a game or two more from the ESPN empire, and all the ESPN3 games it can stand (with most of it university-produced, by the way). Expect CBS Sports to stick around; will another partner pop up?

Wow! Look at what Sinclair is acquiring.
Tribune owns or operates 42 television stations in 33 markets, cable network WGN America, digital multicast network Antenna TV, minority stakes in the TV Food Network and CareerBuilder, and a variety of real estate assets. Tribune’s stations, a list of which is available in Tribune’s most recent Form 10-K filed on March 1, 2017, consist of 14 FOX, 12 CW, 6 CBS, 3 ABC, 2 NBC, 3 MyNetworkTV affiliates and 2 independent stations. The group includes stations in the top three DMAs in the country, seven in the top 10 and 34 in the top 50 DMAs.

Sweet! I can get KDAF OTA.
I want to hear opinions on how our TV potential now compares to other G5s. Were were too early to judge our token AD's negotiating skills? Did she just get lucky or unlucky? Do we need to suck up to Karl Benson?
Don't you love the way other C-USA schools' media are embracing the confererence administration?
If ESPN must have our Championship game, then the conference MUST have a regular season schedule on the non-ESPN3 channels.
Yeah. I don't know what will happen with beIN. Their involvement with college sports was the brainchild of one individual in the states. The decisions are still made in London. Who knows!
ASN/Stadium is another story. Tommy put it best in an interview recently. They are a coverage partner, not a financial partner. We are probably a year away before the 2018 deal is announced. Right now CUSA is looking for potential financial partners. ASN/Stadium doesn't fall into that category and likely declined that type of relationship with the league.
That doesn't mean they won't continue to be a coverage partner. If ASN/Stadium is televising/broadcasting/streaming events for multiple conferences like the Sun Belt, Patriot League, Big South, Colonial, etc...in September, 2018 then I suspect it will have some type of coverage deal with CUSA, as well.
CUSA is like a bad political candidate. It just can't control its message. Information leaks from certain presidents and by the time it makes its way to certain journalists its devolves into something that only sometimes resembles the truth. Like a game of telephone for 10 year olds. It goes from a president who gives a nugget to an AD who give a nugget to an SID who passes that along to a beat writer. And then who knows what comes out on the other end.
If I were the current commissioner I would form a small committee of presidents and keep that smaller group informed. That's what several P5 conferences, like the Big 10, are now doing. And I would not include the presidents of either Marshall or ODU. They both have agendas. I would include Guice, WKU's president and their AD, along with Rice's president.
Things have to change.
I can't argue with that. This C-USA prez or any C-USA prez needs to have a circle of inside supporters.
FYI, Smock has now said BeIN has told him they still want to "play ball" with C-USA.
@dougsmock: Now Stadium Sports (ASN successor) gives me a call telling me they're still interested in C-USA. Came a little late in the game, but ...
I suspected all along that Stadium/ASN was still interested, at a minimum, of being a coverage partner. But it's nice to also know that beIN is also interested in being part of the 2018 deal.
What is STADIUM? Here's A Few AnswersQuote:
I then brought up how ASN had stretched themselves to cover multiple events within a single "telecast window" & asked if that would continue. Adam provided that the plan was to not regionalize live events & to provide a single 24/7 network, though the digital side would have multiple live events going on. He did allow that existing contractual obligations from ASN might require syndication of multiple games in a single window at the start.

Looking at the Fox College FB release, it looks like there may be some openings of FSN in the future.

It looks like they are pushing a lot of their Big 12 & Big 10 games to FOX. Lot of dates with no FBS football on FSN.

After the first three weeks, the other network partners must select games before anyone knows what will be available for FSN. I wouldn't read too much into those schedule gaps just yet.
Here is a good blog regarding Fox schedule http://mattsarzsports.blogspot.com/2...tball.html?m=1

These are the locations you'll probably be able to find the new "Stadium" channel over-the-air and on local cable packages.
I don't know if they will syndicate the games as in the past. I know they will be available for streaming.
I don't know if any of the non-Sinclair ASN channels will become Stadium.

Saw yesterday that Disney is dumping Netflix and expects to launch its own streaming service, including one to build out an ESPN branded streaming service.
https://www.recode.net/2017/8/8/1611...vice-2018-2019
The result is, that BOTH Disney and Netflix will now be needing more content, and most of it will have to be created organically, or purchased just like Netflix was purchasing content from Disney before this announcement. Although I haven't seen Netflix say they intend to expand into sports, why wouldn't they? Furthermore, why couldn't CUSA approach either (or both) of these parties about a streaming service for CUSA games, or even an original programming service for games on their networks?
And the area around Atlanta is blank.
Stadium finally has a legit OTA affiliate in DFW. KTXD channel 47 is now airing Stadium programming.
are they full-time Stadium or just certain games? Nevermind (answered myself)
