Re: Coaching carousel 2016-17 version
I don't think that will grow the fan base... which is what we need the most, imo. Holtz needs a really strong team next year and get hired away. The program is built right now for a good run for the next 4 years or so. It's time to start hitting around the Top 25. We are a decent defense away from getting there.

This is the question Southern Miss faced with Jeff Bower a decade ago. Settle for 7 to 9 wins per season or go for 11 or 12 wins and a BCS bid. They eventually made the decision to move on from him. And they came very close with Larry Fedora. Had they not been upset by UAB with a few weeks left in the 2011 season, they would have broken though.

And they were fools, imho.

Special teams will never improve under him. They hurt us as much as defense at WKY and more than defense at USM

Agreed. We should have stuck with Bower.
Re: Coaching carousel 2016-17 version
Matt Rhule to Baylor. Didn't see that one coming. A coach with no Texas ties who was born in New York and spent his entire career in the northeast.

Maybe, but it's easier to fix those 3 busted plays a game than the 30+ a game from the defense. If we get the defense fixed, the special teams can be overcome more easily. If you punt a ball 6 yards to the 50, a good defense can still force a punt, for example. (assuming we never improve).

Is it too much to expect excellence in all phases of the game?

That would get you a national championship. I just want a freakin' conference championship.

It would appear we need people in place who aim for excellence in order for us to expect it. Right now, excellence on offense (which is run blocking away from achievable) is in the cards. We need competent defense and special teams. Anything above this year's performance and I we are flirting with the Cotton Bowl for sure.

I haven't seen one either. I was born in '83, and the last 10 win season was '84. I think we have only five in program history, so that 70s to early 80s run must have been nice for those who remember it. For the newer Dawgs among us, the most successful season to date for winning percentage is 1997 most likely.
