One comet to swerve closer to Earth than any other comet in centuries
Traci Watson, Special to USA TODAY2:45 p.m. EDT March 18, 2016
An emerald-green comet will brush the Earth Monday, followed one day later by a kissing cousin that will swerve closer to the planet than any other comet in nearly 250 years.
The first and bigger of the two comets will be visible Monday to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, as long as city lights are far away. Stargazers in the United States will probably need only binoculars to see the bigger comet in late March. Scientists, however, are bringing out the big guns. The Hubble Space Telescope, the powerful ground-based Gemini telescopes and others will be trained on the celestial visitors, which will provide an extraordinary close-up of objects usually glimpsed only at a distance.
“This is one for the record books,” says Michael Kelley of the University of Maryland, who’s never heard of two comets approaching close to Earth a day apart. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for professionals to learn more about comets, and if you have a chance to try to find them … it’s a fantastic chance to see part of history as it happens.”
The first member of the pair, known as comet 252P/LINEAR, is a bright green color from the carbon gas it’s puffing out, says the University of Maryland’s Matthew Knight. 252P will slide past Earth at a distance of roughly 3 million miles. That’s well beyond the moon but near enough to put 252P in the top 10 of closest-approaching comets.
252P wasn’t expected to get terribly bright, but it has been “surpassing all expectations,” says amateur comet-hunter Michael Mattiazzo of Australia. It may even be visible to the unaided eye in southern hemisphere suburbs where light pollution is low.
Astronomers discovered the trailing member of the pair, P/2016 BA14, a few months ago. It was shrugged off as yet another asteroid, or space rock. Then astronomers peering through a telescope saw it had a tail – and was therefore a comet. That means BA14 and its larger companion “are among the closest comets to pass by Earth in recorded history,” says Knight, who took the first snapshot revealing BA14 is a comet. The only comet known to have skimmed past us at a smaller distance was Lexell’s Comet in 1770.
Scientists aren’t yet sure of the nature of the relationship between 252P and its hanger-on. Perhaps BA14 broke off 252P decades ago. Both comets could be pieces from an even bigger comet, or they could be unrelated. If the upcoming studies show they’re family, they’ll provide an almost unprecedented scientific bonanza.

Closest Encounter for Earth and Mars in over a Decade
Trilobites
By NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR MAY 30, 2016
n Monday night, Earth and Mars will become cosmically cozy. The two will be at their closest in more than a decade, separated by just 47 million miles.
Normally, Mars is about 140 million miles from Earth on average, but that gap can widen to as much as 250 million miles when the two planets are on opposite sides of the sun.

Sun may have stolen mysterious ninth planet, scientists say
By Jareen Imam, CNN
Updated 5:42 PM ET, Thu June 2, 2016
CNN)We may be a step closer to figuring out the origins of Planet Nine, a mysterious world lurking at the edge of our solar system. For months, headlines have been buzzing about the possibility that our solar system is harboring a rogue planet that has a mass 10 times that of Earth, and scientists have recently noticed it.
If our solar system really does have another planet, it didn't just come out of nowhere, scientists said.
Astronomers believe if such a world does exist, it was pulled into our solar system by the sun, according to a new report in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Scientists believe Planet Nine is really an exoplanet, a world that orbits a star outside a solar system.
If the scientists are right, that would make Planet Nine the first exoplanet to be discovered in our solar system, according to astronomers at Lund University in Sweden. They came to this exoplanet theory based on computer models. It's likely that while our sun was still young, about 4.5 billion years ago, it stole Planet Nine from another star — classic interstellar drama.
"It is almost ironic that while astronomers often find exoplanets hundreds of light years away in other solar systems, there's probably one hiding in our own backyard," Alexander Mustill, astronomer at Lund University, said in a statement.
Since the launch of NASA's planet-hunting space probe Kepler, there have been more than 3,000 exoplanets confirmed in our universe. Exoplanets are important for our search in finding habitable planets because they could possibly harbor life.
Stars are born in clusters, and during that time if they pass by one another they can "steal" a planet or two. Astronomers believe that was probably the case with Planet Nine.
"Planet [Nine] may very well have been 'shoved' by other planets, and when it ended up in an orbit that was too wide around its own star, our sun may have taken the opportunity to steal and capture Planet Nine from its original star," Mustill said.
It's an extraordinary hypothesis, except there's still debate over whether such a world even exists.
"While the existence of Planet [Nine] remains unproven, we consider capture from one of the sun's young brethren a plausible route to explain such an object's orbit," the report stated.
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology announced they found evidence that Planet Nine is lying in our outer solar system, and that the world is a true planet, not a dwarf planet like Pluto.
Supposedly, Planet Nine orbits 20 times farther from the sun than Neptune, which means it may take the world 10,000 to 20,000 Earth years to make a full orbit around our sun.
More research is needed, Mustill said. But if Planet Nine really exists, that means we may be able to visit it one day.

Solar eclipse - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse
As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy.

Re: Huge sunspot pointed at Earth. "There will be signs in the sun moon and stars"
Mrs TD & I are going to Perryville, Mo to see the eclipse and even got NASA approved glasses to watch it! :pimp2::bandana:
Perryville is about the closest decent sized town to the center of the track of the eclipse from Minden. Will see approx 2.5 minutes of total eclipse where Cape Girardeau, about 50 miles south will see about a minute. We're driving 7 hrs to Sikeston, MO the day before the eclipse so we'll be in the vicinity. They say traffic the day of the eclipse could be pretty tough. Might not get to see another eclipse and figured we ought to get our money's worth out of this one.
Word to the wise, if you think you might want to go see the event, better book a room ASAP if you're not within a few hours driving time. When I tried to book a room a couple weeks ago, I couldn't find a decent room at a fair price even in Cape Girardeau. Along the track of the eclipse, community chambers of commerce are making viewing parties a big event to attract tourist. I didn't realize until I started checking into going.
