I had to park way too far away from the stadium than is practical or reasonable. I don't think your campus is designed to accomodate some 8000 visitors in additoon to your own fanbase. But overall, wonderful experience, and good luck the rest of the way!
Thanks except that I've walked three times as far as the distance from our stadium to the furthest parked car when at some SEC games because their is no parking for 80,000+. It ain't that bad.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Exactly.........visit Texas A&M, Miss St, Auburn, or even the junior college in red stick and 3 miles may understate it a little.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
We parked under the window of my long-ago dorm room at Jenkins, and walked. I used to walk from Jenkins all over the place, including over to Aillet for games. Nothing to it. No one else was complaining either. Walked with both Tech and SU fans, chatted with them as we walked. No one had an issue with the park/walk situation.
Overall great experience. Just like some of us have been posting for years (decades) on this forum (and the old forum) of ALL in-state schools, besides LSU, to bring to Ruston, Southern is the #1 choice. I think we have been proven right.

Seriously, I was skeptical, but Southern fan support is very impressive. Well done.

I can understand having to walk long distances at big schools such as LSU, Texas A & M, or Miss. State, but Tech is not one of those schools where 60,000 to 80,000 fans are likely to show up. The number of fans that you anticipate are comparable to what we expect at SU. Our stadiums are of comparable size (Tech 28,019 and SU 28,900) and consequently should have comparable parking spaces. Yet when SU welcomes upwards of 25,000 (approximately 3 times per year), our fans and visitors do not experience the parking difficulties that SU experienced at Tech this weekend. What gives?

Maybe we should bulldoze several of our brand new building and existing neighborhoods and pave a few parking lots.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
The other thing to think about is that those schools have stadiums in the middle of campus. The tailgating is all over campus and the parking is for parking. Not so for us.

Absolutely nothing! Additional parking is a long-range project that requires long-range planning. You guys were wonderful and I really mean that! The game-day experience was nearly perfect. I take back nothing but fond memories of my firsrt visit to JAS.

Entitlement mentality.
People really think they are OWED free vehicle storage at public expense.

Actually, it's Worm that tailgates with me. He's been a friend for more than half my life, and we spent two quarters as roommates making some very poor choices together.
But they weren't all poor choices. He also gets credit for initially hooking me up with the extraordinary lady who is now Mrs. Champ. That alone gains him lifetime admittance to my tailgate.Plus, he always brings extra ice.
Glad you liked the pig. (I stole the recipe from DFM nearly 10 years ago.) Stop by anytime.

Yep, we went to go find my in-laws and my wife said "he was Champ when we were in school." Then it all clicked. Were you on the LA trip?

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I actually think more parking is needed for students as they attend classes. Hopefully we grow attendance so much at football games we have to figure that out.

Wait ... you married Jan S? WTG!
I've never been to LA. As Champ, I travelled to football games in LR, Starkville & College Station. I went to bball tournaments in LR, West Lafayette (Purdue), & Bowling Green (WKU).

You can fit 15 bicycles into a single automobile parking space.
Oh Tech, thy lots so beautiful,
Thy asphalt lanes, thy lack of trees ...

Some of us attended when the admin was not so car oriented. They thought it was their job to provide an education, not parking. Of course they still ran school buses (you know Yellow Hounds) from as far away as Dubach and Quitman and maybe further. Of course there was the shuttle (another Yellow Hound) over to the South Campus or whatever the Ag - Forestry guys called it.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
The master plan specifically addresses the lack of trees. I'd rather have a couple parking garages off main campus than lots scattered everywhere.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
We need shuttles!!! Have students park at JAS during the week and shuttles drop off at different areas on campus. During game days, shuttle takes fans from on campus parking to the stadium.
The shuttles can also be used for basketball games,. pick students up at dorms and take to the TAC/Vice versa.
Also, in the evenings (on non- gamedays), the shuttles can be used to take students to various shopping/dining locations throughout town.

That is not a reason to not do it. We want Tech to grow academically and athletically. With that, Ruston grows. We as a university and a city will need a people-moving system in place (along with all the other growing pains). The best thing is to of started 10 years ago, but since that didn't happen, it needs to start now while everything is still "small" and easily manageable and studied.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I am playing devils advocate here, but there is a reason public transit systems are not private for profit enterprises.
If there was a way for the university to start it and run it without it being a drain of resources I would all for it, Otherwise, enjoy the walk.

Have you ever written grants for a city. Especially a small city where the citizens are "under-served" by public transportation. Too easy!

What about this?:
To combat the systemic inequality of Ruston, everyone should pay their fair share in order to provide access for those under-served by public transportation.

Yes ... people can't get, or keep, jobs without transportation to those jobs. Right now, our transportation infrastructure practically makes automobile ownership a prerequisite to joining the workforce.
It's unfair and unfortunate that transit is perceived as a social program for the poor. That same logic is not applied when considering the staggering public investment in highways, which are effectively an entitlement program for car owners.

Our roads are in bad shape bc we built more than we can maintain. We built more than we can maintain bc of political demand from automobile owners.
A special interest group, car owners, lobbied for more than a century for massive public investment in infrastructure designed exclusively for automobiles. And now they really believe that's what they are owed, with no strings attached, forever. All the benefits + no direct responsibility = entitlement mentality.

More tax revenue. Car registration tax every year depending on the weight vehicle, Property taxes which are 10x what they are in Louisiana
"The median property tax in Louisiana is $243.00 per year for a home worth the median value of $135,400.00. Counties in Louisiana collect an average of 0.18% of a property's assesed fair market value as property tax per year.
Louisiana has one of the lowest median property tax rates in the United States, with only states collecting a lower median property tax than Louisiana."
"The median property tax in Texas is $2,275.00 per year for a home worth the median value of $125,800.00. Counties in Texas collect an average of 1.81% of a property's assesed fair market value as property tax per year.
Texas has one of the highest average property tax rates in the country"

Most folks in LA don't want to hear this -
You can't have adequate public services unless they are funded at the local level
BRAGGING on having one of the lowest property tax rates is not good for anyone involved and those parishes that do are usually sucking hind teat and have horrible public schools -
Now I'm very conservative at heart and in principle, but IF people vote a tax on themselves set the millage at the rate and leave it there from day one...
Don't roll it back and starve your services and punish your constituents with poor schools, roads, water, fire and police protection

City,County and State which make up the vast majority of roads. On top of that, vehicle registration tax which is about $75 per year per vehicle, 3 car/trucks for a family around $225 per year - equivalent to Louisiana's property tax.

Sorry, but when I think Texas roads, I think about those I travel which are mostly federal.
Louisiana has needed to raise the homestead exemption for years. I don't expect it will happen.
Louisiana charges too little for vehicle registration. It needs to be raised and I have 5 vehicles.
I can only speak of Ouachita Parish regarding property tax, but most of it goes to Law Enforcement, Jails, Fire, and Schools. Way too much of it goes to libraries. Other than the general fund (assuming they get some road money) I don't pay a single dime of property tax to build or maintain local roads or bridges.
Also, I pay approx. $1300/year for a $250K house. I think your math might be off for on our property taxes.

You never venture off the interstate? You are missing out on so much, there is more to Texas than gas stations and truck stops.

Yes, my last trip over I did travel hwy 6 from Waco to Eastland. It was very scenic and I enjoyed it. I'm a native Texan, so I'm familiar with the quality of state and local roads. It's just that I normally travel interstate these days.
Looks like Bobby Jindal gave the "tax-rates.org" folks their latest info. on Louisiana.;)

Here is the link to the Grand Recap from 2014 for Ouachita -
https://www.opassessor.com/pdf/TaxIn...drecap2014.pdf
Since there is no dedicated roads & bridge maintenance tax - it is safe to assume that your General Fund millage (which is set by R.S.) is used to fund the Hwy Department
So yes you do pay property taxes for the upkeep of parish roads within the parish

Louisiana exempts the 1st $75,000 - so only 60,400 of that median value is actually taxed.

Yes, family lives in Louisiana. And I believe that's why a lot the old timers loved Huey P Long. I can see why though, during that era there was hardly enough money for even the basics much less taxes

Ouachita has a 1% sales tax in the un-incorporated areas of the parish that is solely dedicated for upkeep of parish roads and bridges - prior to that there was a property tax dedicated to such
The 1% generates about $7,000,000 annually for public works (which btw is greater than my entire budget (all funds) here in Claiborne)

$7M won't touch what we need to do in un-incorporated areas. Like I said, we are able to patch.

How many miles are in your Parish System?
I have 833? miles (one way) in mine with 2/3 of them being paved (chip & seal) -
Our budget is about $2.1 million for the Road Fund - which presently enables us to chip and seal about 30 miles of road annually along with routine maintenance -
The big difference is that we only employ 22 people (including Administration) compared to over 65 for the OPPJ
If I had $7 million in sales tax monies for just roads I would be in hog heaven

You can't have adequate public services unless they are funded at the local level
BRAGGING on having one of the lowest property tax rates is not good for anyone involved and those parishes that do are usually sucking hind teat and have horrible public schools -
Now I'm very conservative at heart and in principle, but IF people vote a tax on themselves set the millage at the rate and leave it there from day one...
Don't roll it back and starve your services and punish your constituents with poor schools, roads, water, fire and police protection
That's true and that's another difference between Texas and Louisiana. 1.5% of 3% property tax goes to fund the ISD. The better the school is, the higher the property tax.

We are paying almost 3% here in Ouachita Parish (West Side).

Almost 3% of my total property tax goes to schools is what I should have said.
The total rate for schools on my tax bill is .0292.
Remember we have a homestead exemption of $75K along a VERY reduced rate of appraisal.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
On houses above the exemption - you are usually paying less than 1.0% in total taxes (schools, roads, libraries etal) in rural North LA
Its usually closer to 0.5% -

Gotcha
Just for comparison even with the Louisiana homestead exemption, the local property tax 2.89 (some are higher and some are less) here in Texas would be
250-75=175k * .0164 = $2,870 for ISD
= 175k * .0125 = $2,187 for city, county, all the rest
$5,057 total annual property tax

Louisiana Act 513 of 1976. Took all of the authority away from the DOTD Chief Engineer (protected by Civil Service) and created political appointed positions in charge of finance and operations. Nine out of ten apparent poor decisions, or lack of doing anything at all, is based on the political climate du jour. If it is unpopular or controversial for anyone...it isn't getting done.

Reduced rate of appraisal? So your 250k house is appraised at?

Like most others in this state, I'm not paying taxes on the "loan value". Ask anybody running for office if they would consider lowering the homestead exemption and see how fast they find another conversation to engage in.

It's unfair and unfortunate that transit is perceived as a social program for the poor. That same logic is not applied when considering the staggering public investment in highways, which are effectively an entitlement program for car owners.

It's a red state. With mostly conservative red state politicians. It's truly amazing that Champ967 can't connect the dots.

Id like to participate, but out of respect for the sports forum, I must abstain.

I've heard him sing kumbaya. He's a terrible singer.

But to clarify ... I have little objection to highways running between communities.
It's the proliferation of auto infrastructure within population centers where I think the costs have come to outweigh the benefits,

Texas Republicans, I've observed, are actually quite moderate, esp. on fiscal issues.

When you drive your horseless carriage from one community to the next, what are you s'pose to do with it while you go in the general store and get your grub and supplies?

Grab your lute and strum a madrigal.
Seriously, y'all are caricaturizing this. I don't object to the existence of cars. Only our dependence on them, and the entitlement arising from that dependence.

I thought entitlement mentality was now a right in the US? OK, now I'm just confused.

Memphis has spent a good chunk of change installing bike lanes throughout the city. We even have a "bike lane czar" whose job is to get federal funds to build more. These were met with much ridicule in the poorest areas of the city, yet these are the folks complaining about lack of transportation. There is a certain element of the population that will never be satisfied with anything.

Yeah -- don't know what to say about that.
