IDK, but probably just to play the game and have something to lie to their constituents about..."we tried, but..."

So the unwritten rules only work when people are respecting the institution. If Trump and the Republicans have calculated that they must only live within the written rules, the institution will never be functional again. Kind of a cutting off the nose to spite the face.
This has nothing to do with Trump and you know it. He didn't order the nuclear option and if he had, there would likely have been a cowardly defector like McCain.
The dems rubbed their noses in the appointments using the options. EVERYBODY thought Hillary was going to pick the next SCOTUS anyway, so the denial of Garland was political gesturing. Of course you know that too.
No, I like him, but he is not as grounded as Paul IMO. I don't get upset that Paul won't budge on issues. I get upset that people like McCain are vindictive cowards who would rather stick a knife in Trump's back than do what the people who elected him want him to do. He is a HORRIBLE human being.
At least McCain has a conscience, unlike the truly HORRIBLE human being we have in the White House.
He is likely the dumbest guy on capitol hill.
He wants to be loved by the media and the liberals in Hollywood, so he takes on this dumb maverick persona and acts like it's a great thing to be a turncoat against those that support him (including the voters that put him in office). Naturally, he is loved by the mainstream media and the Hollywood types, because he sticks it to republicans when they need him most. He relishes the attention he gets. He wants to be adored.
You would have thought he would have learned how much he really is adored when he ran for president and the very ones he so wants to love him turned on him and made fun of his self-proclaimed maverick personality in addition to portraying him as an angry, out-of-control white guy.
Combine that with the willingness to sacrifice his own people, as you have described (and his willingness to sacrifice his own ideals) for a personal vendetta, and you have someone that is untrustworthy and not dependable.
It does appear McCain is all about McCain.
But, the whole issue of "healthcare," the HC industry, the insurance industry are all more important than McCain and DC Establishment azzholes like him. The question of HC should not even be in DC. It should be all about the free market. Things get mucked-up when the federal guvmint gets involved. And HC has been exposed to it so long that it'll take something draconian to dig ourselves out of this ever-deepening pit.
“It is clear that any serious attempt to improve our health care system must begin with a full repeal and replacement of Obamacare, and I will continue fighting on behalf of the people of Arizona to achieve it.” John McCain
Sen. Chuck Schumer won’t work with Republicans if they want to kill Obamacare: “They broke it, they own it” Chuck Schumer
So why is McCain turning his back on all of the promises he made to his constituents and publicly giving the thumbs down to bills he supported while Obama was president, but now sides with Chuck Schumer who has already said he will not consider repeal or replace?
Make no sense, and will result in a single payor system. Republicans have not yet figured out how to govern. Dems employ an incrementalist approach and steadily move the ball down the field. Republicans are not happy unless they get a touchdown on every play.
If you take him at his word, McCain is wants to work on a bipartisan solution. That sounds like a better idea than passing a whole new health care policy every time a new party takes over.
