I am not a very sympathetic person, but I have gotten better with empathy with practice. Of course, I am not perfect with it, but have improved greatly.

By the way, I tend to believe what separates well-meaning liberals and well-meaning conservatives is that the well-meaning folks on the right tend to put principle over people (perhaps with the paternalistic view that adherence to principle will serve the people) whereas well-meaning folks on the left tend to focus on people over principle. Truth vs understanding. Judgment vs empathy.
i think it's a mistake to simplify it in that way, but at least you recognize that there are well-meaning folks on the right (something that seems to elude most on the left). you can empathize with the guy on the corner begging for loose change and still recognize that giving him money won't help him.

No empathy is being able to actually put yourself in the place of someone to understand and feel what they do. (You have experience the same) You only sympathize. You have no no idea what it actually feels like, but you think you do.
I noticed you and others dropping the "empathy" word regularly and wondered why. I then noticed it was fast becoming the buzz word for all socialist Trump haters. I gave you a chance to change your word choice before I called you out, but you insisted on sticking to the CNN/MSNBC buzz word.
Re: What is Systemic Racism?
About a week ago I was on NSU's campus coming out of a building that has a flight of stairs. Some really tall girl, with a rubber knee brace, was ahead of me and after her second step she grimaced and went down hard. I rushed to her aid, helping her get a hand on the railing and she was able to lift herself up. She said, "sorry, just off of knee surgery and I am suppose to walk, and use stairs as part of my rehab....but damn, does it ever hurt!"
I said, "I can empathize with you. Been there...three times(3 knee surgeries), and I still have knee problems."
That's proper empathy.
* last night, after standing the whole game, I wasn't sure if I would be able to step off the bleacher to the ground. My right knee swelled up and I was by myself with no one to lean on. It hurt to step off, by knew I had to."

No, you still are confused about what empathy means. It doesn’t mean you have literally experienced the exact same thing, but it is the psychological projection of yourself into someone else’s situation to experience their feelings.
What do you have against empathy?

Not psychological. That's sympathy.
Y'all picked the wrong buzz word. Sympathy would have done, but that sounds so condescending which is actually perfect for the white guilt experience.

Where are you coming up with this?

Empathy is a prosocial trait. Lacking the ability to empathize is antisocial.
I actually became interested in the idea and power of empathy a couple years before Trump after a specific life experience - which also kept me mostly away from this forum.

How far back did you go? The word empathy didn't come along until the turn of the 20th century.

You can't empathize with someone unless you have experienced what they have experienced. You can't project yourself in their shoes through the mind. That is sympathy.

Understanding what others are feeling because you have experienced it yourself or can put yourself in their shoes.
Notice the word “or” which means that you can put yourself in someone’s shoes without having experienced it yourself.
Some people are incapable of doing it, and this lack of ability is antisocial. With at least some practice most people can do it. It is not something that you can just conjure up in a second but requires some effort to understand the person’s specific situation. Understanding is the key, and it is near impossible to do while judging.

Okay, I'll play along...
You have the ability to mentally put yourself in the place of blacks who suffer from social injustices. You are capable of this because you understand, but don't judge. Is that it?
Not being able to do so would make one a narcissist, which is the second buzz word tied to the act/feeling of empathy. I think your fear or hate of those with a narcissistic personality disorder have played in to your reasoning skills.
You'll make a great prayer warrior someday.;)

Well, narcissists are empathy deficient, but not all people that are empathy deficient are narcissists - they could also be a sociopath of another variety.
I think anyone that has empathetic traits can begin to understand systemic racism by trying to mentally project yourself in the same situation, but you can’t do that while making judgments. Your judgments carry you own point of view into the “frame”.

Which is why you have graciously volunteered to work the next 20 years for social justice; in Ferguson Mo. for 5 years, LA's Watts for 5 years, the Detroit projects for 5 years and after this Somalia for the remaining. Right??? Right????
Oh wait, you're going on a 2 month mission trip to Africa and then America's slums huh? Right?
I thought not!! Just all liberal spin and talk huh?
Nah we'll leave that to the churches, Christians and those that actually care to accomplish these things due to their lack of empathy. Right?

Having empathy does not mean you have to dedicate a life to service. It just helps you be a prosocial member of society.
