ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk announced today that the Naval Academy has accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl Thursday, December 22 at 7:30 p.m. (PST) at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California against a Mountain West opponent. The game will be televised by ESPN2. The bid also came with a bonus as the Mids will have the opportunity to play in the Poinsettia Bowl in 2008, 2009 or 2010 if Navy is bowl eligible (Navy can pick the year).
"Blue sky, 72 degrees, palm trees and sunshine in December works for us," said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "A beautiful setting in a Navy city in one of the finest football venues in the country has everyone excited. We have had discussions with the Poinsettia Bowl executives for quite a while and their attention to detail and enthusiasm for our team and fans leads one to believe that this will be our finest bowl experience yet. Three bowl games in a row is historic for the Academy and our congratulations to Coach Johnson, his staff and our players for reaffirming that Navy is one of the finest football programs in the nation. Let's beat Army first, then take on the Mountain West for a fantastic finish to a historic season."
"What better way to kick off San Diego's newest bowl game than to have the United States Naval Academy as one of the teams," said Poinsettia Bowl President Doug Sawyer. "We couldn't be happier that the Naval Academy has accepted our invitation."

"The Naval Academy has one of the most tradition-rich college football programs in the country, and we're so pleased the Midshipmen will be bringing their traditions and exciting football team to our community."
"I'm excited the team has achieved one of their goals, to have a chance to go to a bowl game, and I'm excited to be going to San Diego," said Navy head coach Paul Johnson. "I was lucky enough when I coached in Hawaii to play there in the Holiday Bowl. It's a great city and I'm sure the kids will have a great time. We are excited about it. We will talk about it today and then put it on the back burner. After today we won't mention it again until after the Army-Navy game. It's good to get it out of the way now. There's no question where our focus needs to be and will be."
The bowl bid is a landmark achievement for the football program as it marks the first time in school history that Navy has gone to three-straight bowl games. Navy can achieve another first by beating Army on Dec. 3 (2:30 p.m., CBS) and winning the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for a third consecutive year.
Tickets are on sale now at www.navysports.com(.) Tickets can also be purchased by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the Ricketts Hall Box Office. Tickets are $45 for club seats and $35 for field seats. Fans not able to attend the game can purchase tickets to send a Midshipman for $35.
"We strongly encourage Navy fans to buy their bowl tickets from the Athletic Association. Our goal is 20,000 tickets sold so it is very important for this year and for future bowl games that your purchase counts towards our allotment. If you can't make it to the game we ask that Navy fans buy two tickets for our midshipmen to attend the game. The donation is 100 percent tax deductible."

Maybe not that bad. Navy to Hawaii was wishful thinking on our part even though it made good sense. Our first concern regarding bowls (besides being 7-4) is for Fresno to go somewhere outside of the WAC. Our second concern is that at least one spot will remain open between Houston, Sheveport, Nashville, and Ft. Worth. We really need one of three CUSA teams to lose this week.

I was in San Diego when they announced this bowl in May. One of the suits said in the local paper a team like Navy would be great for their initial bowl (if they had a bowl-eligible team).

I think that there is a decent chance that a 6-5 Tech team goes to Hawaii IF Nevada gets that Emerald Bowl bid.

Downside would be that the N.O. bowl is on a Tuesday while the Hawaii bowl is on a Friday.... not that I can make it to Hawaii regardless.

I'm being selfish -
I can can justify the $$$ for three days in Lafayette - I can't justify the amount I would have to spend to go to the islands -
I would just rather them go to a bowl I can attend, thats all -
I'm not saying to not accept the ANY bowl invitation -

If we plan on showing up, playing CUSA in Hawaii would be good for us. For selfish reasons, I'd rather see us go to a bowl that I can get to. But I'll say this, I'd rather beat a sunbelt team in NO than lose to a CUSA team on the Island.

Would you rather see a whole side of Tech fans in Lafayette cheering on the dogs against an past in state rival, or maybe 100-200 Tech fans cheering on a Tech team that doesn't travel all that well playing against a C-USA team that cares nothing about us or that bowl?
