That picture is hilarious. My coworkers are getting a big kick out of it.
I think it does have a lot to do with (1) how frequently you encounter the word and (2) the context "clues" in the sentence. If enough small words are used, the big words are easier to guess.
You are supposed to use the correct letters for the first and last letter.
