    LHSAA Anti-Byrd Amendment

The high school principals are trying to reclassify the private schools into a separate classification for the playoffs.

However, it's not just the private schools that the public principals don't want to compete against. They have created the terms "select" and "non-select" schools. "Select" schools are private schools and dual-enrollment public schools with greater than 33% of the student body in the magnet program.

Byrd just happens to be the only public school that fits into that category because 40% of the school is in the magnet program, and Byrd would be the only "select" 5A school in North Louisiana.

    http://www.shreveporttimes.com/artic...private-debate

Rumor is that this is an attempt by Shreve to get the Caddo School Board to limit Byrd's magnet enrollment to less than 33% because the majority of Byrd's magnet students come from Shreve's district.

Every public school in Caddo Parish has a magnet program and can draw from anywhere in the parish. Byrd's magnet program already has the highest standards in the parish with a 2.76 GPA requirement, which is higher than Caddo Magnet's 2.5 GPA requirement. You also have to score greater than 50%tile on both the English and Math sections of the LEAP.

The jealously of some of these public school principals is really pathetic.

Let's see how Henderson fumbles this one. They go for ECA, John Curtis, etc., but lump in the magnets just because...

...bunch of over achievers down looking forward to the free room and board and how they can screw the public out of more playoff and "Dome" money. Waaaaay over funded organization with waaaaaay too much power.

It's not plural. It's singular. Public with >33% magnet. Byrd is the only neighborhood/magnet school that fits into that category. That's the problem.

Excuse please. Point remains, Byrd has been lumped in because they are good and they are hated.

Good at what? They had one good year in football and are average at best in everything else. Everyone from Byrd thinks everybody is jealous of them, when in all actuality there is nothing in which to be jealous.

No way in Hell this passes. Byrd has quality students for a reason.

The major issue is the public vs. private debate. Byrd was probably just thrown in there to get the support of the North Louisiana principals. Airline loves the amendment.

Byrd has and has had the best thing going for the last few years. They have the best fan support of any school in the state. Yes they have better fan support than WM.

WM has championship trophies out the arse, but can't fill the stadium up for a home semi-final game.

BTW, Airline has great potential if they don't screw it up.

I've been to a couple of Byrd games a few years back, they must have really upped their support in the last few years. Most people here don't have any Byrd hate as far as I know but people are tired of watching the kids they see grow up a few doors down leave and play for Evangel, Calvary, and yes Byrd.

No, they haven't. I went to one this year and the attendance was good but it didn't fill up one side of Lee Hedges and to say this is the anti-Byrd Amendment if laughable. This Amendment was written by a principal in south La who couldn't care less about Byrd. It is a problem in South La and Byrd is just the only one in n la.

It's just another "punish the successful" story.

The article said that Byrd is the only 5A neighborhood/magnet school in the state that falls into that category.

Do you think the principal of South Beauregard came up with the Byrd clause on his own? No.

Even though Byrd isn't winning state championships anymore, Byrd has had the best overall athletic program and best support of all the Shreveport public schools. Shreve was the dominant school in the 70s and 80s, and Byrd was almost shut down in the 80s. Then Byrd started the magnet program in 1986 and vaulted back to the top. Over the past 2 decades, Byrd has dominated Shreve in almost everything in academics and athletics. On the football field, Byrd is 17-1 against Shreve in their last 18 games. Shreve is jealous because Byrd is beating Shreve with a bunch of kids from Shreve's district. That's what this is about: Byrd's magnet program attracting so many kids from Shreve's district. Shreve was forced down from 5A to 4A a few years ago as Byrd's enrollment was around 2,000. That's why Shreve is attempting to get the Caddo School Board to limit Byrd's magnet enrollment to 33% of the student body. It's the same pettiness that McCalla stooped to to get the "Jacket Pride City Wide" billboard removed. I am convinced that McCalla is behind the Byrd clause of this LHSAA amendment as well.

This is driven in North LA by Shreve and Airline and to some extent Haughton (just reclassed as 5A), Benton (fastest growing public school in the state projected to be 5A in 4 years) and Minden (if there is more consolidation will be knocking on the door)....
