VCU sold $1.3 million in merch in March 2011 vs. $59k in merch March 2010. Basketball is the quickest way to make money for your AthDept. Oh, and athletics is the lens through which the public views your University.

You just hit the nail on the head.
Just one year~"~
Never happen with crappy AD like Bruce
Complete ass I guess
Didn't take long for this excellent point to turn into something it's not about. MBB (NOT WBB!) can make money for the University. VCU is the prime example. They just made it back to their second straight NCAA tourny after going from a play in game to the final four last year.
In 2011, the Rams' journey to the Final Four began in one of the four opening round games, commonly called "play-in" games, intended to narrow the field from 68 to 64 teams. Thus, VCU became the first team to advance from the "First Four" to the Final Four.
Actually he is NOT advocating that...
They made the run with the same coach they had in 2010 and were a basket from going back to the Sweet 16 with that same coach this year -
And that's just MERCHANDISE sales - it doesn't include the increase in ticket sales, sponsorships and conference distributions due to that final four run...
VCU has made out like a BANDIT
''Don't be a bad dagh..."
MBB will always be the best ROI in college sports if a university does it right.
What do any of you think Tech would have to spend to get a final 4 appearance every several years?
How much did Memphis spend to raise their program up, and how long did it take?
USU has good attendance but they still can't break through to the top ranks. They have consistently good basketball and attendance, but haven't struck gold yet.
