This was in the Advocate today.

    http://theadvocate.com/home/2718743-...ing-challenges

"Leaders of the Louisiana School Boards Association have told local school board members they may need a financial commitment to challenge two newly passed laws that are aimed at overhauling public schools."

An update on the school voucher program:

Calvary Baptist Academy (Shreveport) and Mt. Olive Christian School (Athens) will not participate in the school voucher program next school year. Schools have a May 18th deadline to decide whether or not to participate.

Heard very few people showed up for the Q and A last night at RHS with State Supt of Education John White. He may be the least qualified person in America holding a job of that importance. But he is a Jindal "yes" man. And that goes a long way these days.

Cedar Creek's not participating and it looks as if Bethel Christian won't either. It's nothing more than a gimmick. Great job, Piyush!

It's funny to me that Creek is not participating, when Connie Bradford (BESE member and former CC principal) is pushing this agenda. I don't blame the private schools for not participating. They know better. I have said this before and will say it again, there are too many people with no experience in public education making decisions that are way over their heads. Our local BESE members are included in that.

That New Living Word could get 315 vouchers is embarrassing. Embarrassing to Ruston, Lincoln Parish, and Louisiana. But hey, that's what Piyush wanted.

I only know what I've read in the past week or so. Maybe this will explain a little further:

    http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/2...text|FRONTPAGE

Also, the pastor/leader of the church (and the school?) is a former LaTech assistant football coach and was head coach at USL for a few seasons. He sued them and was awarded $2 million, claiming he was fired because he was black, rather than the 6-27 record he posted. I believe the judgment was later overturned. (not that this is related to the current issue; just providing some info)

I know nothing about New Living Word church, school, or Rev. Jerry Baldwin other than the brief bio I read about Rev. Baldwin as a head coach at UL-Lafayette. I'm still concerned about the speed that the school voucher program flew through the Legislature this session, and the procedure the Department of Education used to determine which schools are worthy of vouchers and how many vouchers each school can receive.

NLW still has to convince Lincoln Parish parents to move their children from low-ranking Lincoln Parish public schools to their school. The school also has provide a high-quality education for their new students in order to keep the children and justify the school vouchers they received.

If New Living Word can provide a better education for the students than the public schools in Lincoln Parish, then that's fantastic for the students, the area, and the state. Public schools will have to work harder to improve their operations in order to win back the students. For NLW's sake and for the parents and students who choose to go to the school, I hope New Living Word becomes a tremendous success.

If New Living Word cannot do it, then the school will be deemed a failure and the parents will look for a better option for the child's education just as they are considering right now.

Putting the power in the parents will control this program (as it should).

If the New Living Word school is crappy, then no parents will use those vouchers for that school. From the sounds of it I wouldn't send my kids there. And that's fine......I like having the freedom of choice.

The article I read said the school is not complete and they don't have teachers hired for the year. They currently don't have a place to put the kids that will be coming.

They are a "school" in Ruston. Do some research on them and you'll know why it's embarrassing. The term "school" is used very loosely.
