    State Employee Retirement

    Article on State Retirement:

    http://theadvocate.com/home/2398014-125/state-employee-retirement-age-proposal

"Under the Jindal-pushed legislation, the retirement age would increase to 67 for certain public employees. He exempts those who are age 55 by a certain date as well as employees in hazardous-duty positions. Jindal said those in hazardous-duty positions need protection because of the nature of the jobs they do."

This includes State Troopers who's "nature of their job" include providing protection detail for the Govenor.

This is what all states are facing. (bad quality, but the only video I could find that illustrates it so well):

Didn't say that. The point I'm making is it shows favoritism to hazardous pay positions and it is convent that they just happened to also be the Governor’s body guards. The debate is not what qaulifies as hazardous pay but is it fair that one state group is exempt over another for the retirement cuts.

You're demeaning the job they do as a whole in order to find another way to gripe about Jindal.

Yes, some jobs are better than and a hell of a lot more hazardous than others and should have different rules. How is that a debate?

So your saying that the more dangerous a job the more important it is. That is a bunch of crap.

Why? If someone is putting their life and health on the line everyday they should be rewarded, thus the term "Hazard Pay", that can be through higher paychecks, earlier retirement, better benefits etc.

    Re: State Employee Retirement

I guess when you are the state employee that is having your retirement contract you signed changed you see things from a different perspective. I do respect what the hazardous pay employees do as I work along side them but it doesn't seem right that one group of state employee's gets their retirement hacked away at when it is the whole retirement system that is the problem. That is the point I was trying to make. Take it as it is.

How is it not? Try to convince me that anyone in human resources, social sciences, financial management, etc. should be treated the same as someone who is required to give their life at a moments notice everyday until they retire.

The real reason of the difference is that you don't want 67 year old cops on the beat. Physical jobs.

As far as changing an employee's retirement mid-way through a career....well that's just shitty.

I agree, that's why I'm all for the 401k's w/ employer match; as long as you become vested it's your money and can take it with you, otherwise you're at the company/state/feds mercy.
