I did speak today with a non-administration source at one of the prime candidates who is hearing that North Texas, Utah State and Florida International are pretty much done deals in terms of membership, regardless of league affiliation.

(Another source from outside either league said members are starting to pressure commissioners Craig Thompson and Britton Banowsky to pick up the pace and get things figured out sooner rather than later. Which would be a huge relief to everyone involved, including yours truly.)

the one thing i don't get about unt, fiu, and utah state being "done deals" is that the one thing these conferences are all seemingly in love with is market size. that expalins unt and fiu, regardless of h0w lousy their programs are. it does not expalin utah state. what does logan, utah have that ruston doesn't?

There aren't many pretty teams on the west side. USU has big time MBB. They are almost a guarantee of future NCAA units to the conference.

I wish C-USA would just invite all five of our targets and be done with expansion. UNT, FIU and La Tech effective July 1st 2013 and UTSA and UNCC effective July 1st 2015. It accomplishes several things.

In 2013, we add two strong television markets and a program that would be competitive right away. C-USA buys itself two years to work out divisional structure, mini-playoff, collect all exit fees and NCAA credits and satisfy the current contracts with our television partners (Fox through 2015).

In a couple years, Charlotte and UTSA give us two more large television markets and another eastern time zone team to keep us and ECU happy. They get two additional years to get up to speed with recruiting, building donor bases and constructing/upgrading/renovating facilities.

MWC needs another team, but there's nobody to add over there (Idaho or NM State). They could put UNT over there and add Middle Tennessee to CUSA. (24).
