Wow! "everyone" supported...but it never happened. Was DOA. Why didn't it happen if "everyone" supported it?

Because one particular state senator worked tirelessly behind the scenes to scuttle it. And I'll qualify what I said. Of those who really mattered in that debate the only people who opposed it were those 3 state senators.

Was DOA? It easily got out of Committee. It had enough support on both the House floor and Senate floor to pass, but too many in each group were scared away out of fear for their own pet projects. Losing the support of those 3 state senators, who could vote in a block, for money earmarked for their own districts is the underlying reason why the bill went down.

That loss of support in the senate scared enough House members away from supporting it. The only other potential roadblock it ran into was a group of House members in New Orleans who feared that a successful merger of LSUS and Tech would have meant another merger fight over UNO and SUNO.

    So on and so forth...

Had one state senator tell me he supported the merger in principle, but wanted to see the details and how it would affect "other matters." You might say, well, that was just one senator, but based on other feedback I think he was fairly typical of the legislature. That's why I say it was DOA. It was so very easy to offer a thumbs up when asked about it generically, but when push came to shove some "supporting it" would have, and some did, switch sides.

    Typical politics...

BREAKING: LSU–Baton Rouge flexes its political muscle to keep LSUS in its death spiral so @MayorGlover defers bill to merge LSUS into Louisiana Tech due to lack of support.

He needs to replace "LSU" with "LSU System".

Glover didn't have his ducks in a row and didn't have a plan. I was thinking maybe he did. Can probably put this idea to bed. C'est la vie.

I don't blame Glover, I blame all those state legislatures that sees only Purple and Gold.

This was a pretty good idea when first proposed. The continued neglect of LSUS makes it worse and worse as time goes on. Eventually LSUS will starve out. We just have to focus on making Tech the best it can be and do what we can in Shreveport.

LSUS almost shut it doors in 2016. Their online model isn't sustainable. Also it's crazy that state of Louisiana is funding basically an online school now. How many classrooms are unused? How many teachers are actually coming into the office? There is a lot of wasteful spending trying to keep their campus running.

It's a ridiculous situation. If LSU does something with it now, more power to them. Otherwise, until the day they knock on our door asking us to take it over it doesn't warrant another thought. By that time it may be too late to salvage.

And it makes me laugh to see the Baton Rouge Chancellor brag about it being the faster growing school in the state. When you're working with small numbers it doesn't take much to get high percentage increases. What a self-serving doofus!

Hate to bring this up again....but, just wanted to mention that a Facebook "friend" is posting that LSU's national championship in football is proof that LSUS is much better off staying in the LSU system. I don't see how success on the football field for the school in Baton Rouge translates to more support/better support for the school in Shreveport, but hey, there ya go!
